Westminstenders: Happy Brexit Day!

Happy Brexit day!

Oh wait. No its not.

May looks like she is going to bring the MVIII (Meaningful Vote 3) tomorrow minus the PD (political declaration).

The legalities of this are questionable should the vote pass. The MV needs to have an accompanying PD, by law under the terms of the Withdrawal Act.

That's kind of irrelevant given the likelihood of the deal passing anyway. The DUP have apparently negotiated a 'Stormont Lock' to get more assurances, only for them promptly to say there's no chance of them voting for the deal anyway.

The vote is all about Labour v Conservatives and where we can lay the blame for no deal in two weeks time.

Meanwhile we are already into a prolonged Tory Leader Election with all its glorious gentlemanly behaviour.

Anyway its time for extra time and national riots for delaying Brexit.

DadDadDad

We were discussing the very same idea after listening too! Quickly discounted it though. Property prices in London (despite today’s announcement of the first national house price fall, 0.7%,for several years), are already unaffordable for most. Just imagine what they would become as millions of people clammered to try to get in!
I wrote to Mr. Tusk yesterday, just to say thank you for remembering the millions whose rights are being trampled on. Completely futile exercise really, he won’t read it.
ThinkI was secretly hoping to receive in return “dear Langrish: thank you so much for writing. Do bring your family to live in Brussels, with special citizenship, as our guests” 😂
Joking aside, could never have imagined harbouring such a ridiculous flight of fancy, I really love this country but it doesn’t feel like home any more.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 29/03/2019 11:05

What time is the actual vote?

Langrish · 29/03/2019 11:07

Pretty it’d: I/husband in the City for decades. No longer there, public sector now but still finance and dealing daily with economists, analysts, brokers etc.
Consensus is that Mervyn always was and remains woolly (putting it very politely). There is pretty much across the board respect for Carney, who is completely on the ball. I’d take his opinion every time.

AutumnCrow · 29/03/2019 11:09

Theresa May walked out of the House of Commons at the start of Ian Blackford's speech. He's the Leader of the SNP in Westminster.

Is she bored? Plotting? Unwell? Gone off to laugh even more hysterically in the face of disaster?

Littlespaces · 29/03/2019 11:09

Thanks DadDadDad for the explanation. That makes sense.

I also heard the Melvyn Bragg's programme on R4 yesterday and had exactly the same thought! Sad times that we are thinking like this, but I would be well positioned in Wessex.

ContinuityError · 29/03/2019 11:09

Littlespaces As DadDadDad says re the odds - 2/9 means that you have to wager a large amount (£9) for a small win (£2 plus your original stake of £9). Shortening means you have to wager more to win even less.

At the moment Yes is 3/1, so a wager of £1 wins you £3 (plus your £1 stake).

The bookies think No to the WA is a lot more likely than Yes.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 29/03/2019 11:12

Ian Blackford is the only person who has mentioned the 1million people on the march. Also the petition.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 29/03/2019 11:12

Iain Duncan Smith. Another Chequers plotter

pepinana · 29/03/2019 11:12

Eugh Ian Duncan Smith turns my stomach

MarshaBradyo · 29/03/2019 11:13

Carney is brilliant. One of the few people who interview well on R4. Clear and measured

prettybird · 29/03/2019 11:13

Littlespaces - if it ends up being the same criteria last time, you just need to be living in Scotland at the time of independence to get Scottish citizenship if you want it (it won't be forced on anyone Smile) - so plan your move Grin

CordeliaEarhart · 29/03/2019 11:13

The other parties are terrified of being seen as anti-Brexit. They don't realise that the entire electorate has lost faith in them anyway. Maybot and her shocking mismanagement of the Brexit process, and JC's general toddler-like behaviour.

MarshaBradyo · 29/03/2019 11:14

Can’t believe IDS is still around

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 29/03/2019 11:15

So IDS is shooting the WA vote in the foot by saying that the EU will give the UK an extension of up to 2 years after the 12th April.
So why should mps approve the WA , if there is no real risk of a no deal Brexit

Langrish · 29/03/2019 11:16

NoAutumnCrow, just dismissive of Scotland (remember, that vital component of the Union her predecessor was so desperate to court?)
I’m English and I think the way the wishes of 2 of our 4 nations are being completely disregarded are outrageous.

CordeliaEarhart · 29/03/2019 11:16

Are Physics teachers needed in Scotland pretty? I miss Edinburgh so the chance to be an EU citizen again might be the final push I need to make a change.

bellinisurge · 29/03/2019 11:16

I was for WA - last two votes. Not now. Not split up from political declaration. Not if it means replacing TM with a complete headbanger.

LonelyTiredandLow · 29/03/2019 11:17

Bit worried about Steve Bray (the guy who shouts out STOP BREXIT!). We met him at the march and I shook his hand because he really winds up my leaver friend Grin. I've just heard him on the news...I think he will be a huge target Sad I can see a gaggle of people in the background but no huge crowds.

keepforgettingmyusername · 29/03/2019 11:17

Oh god I'm so nervous!

DadDadDad · 29/03/2019 11:17

On the bookmakers, I said that they "believe" that this outcome is likely - that's shorthand for them just responding to where punters are placing their bets. So if lots of bets are made on an option, they will cut the odds to manage their losses, and offer longer odds on other outcomes where few are betting to try to attract bets there to hopefully make a profit.

Are MPs allowed to bet? I guess they don't have the same rules around this that sportsmen have to observe. Shock

MyNameIsArthur · 29/03/2019 11:18

Happy Brexit Day!

WhatWouldScoobyDoo · 29/03/2019 11:20

Gorgeous 'Scoobycat'!

1TisI Thank you! Smile

The80sweregreat · 29/03/2019 11:20

I did read on the Guardian website the vote is about 2.30 today., i guess they want to vote, have a chat and then get off home or down the pub.
How can it go ahead, though, when the speaker said it can't the other week? seems they can get 'round things' when they want !
anyway, i am at a loss now and i was actually following it all on wednesday and getting to grips with how it all works.

LonelyTiredandLow · 29/03/2019 11:21

Definite chanting in the background now. All EU flags behind the reporters have been replaced with UKIP and Union Jack. Can't hear Bray anymore.

prettybird · 29/03/2019 11:22

Cordelia - there is a desperate shortage of Physics teachers. Smile
