Brexit

The fucking patronising response from the govt to the 6million petition

^This Government will not revoke Article 50. We will honour the result of the 2016 referendum and work with Parliament to deliver a deal that ensures we leave the European Union.

It remains the Government’s firm policy not to revoke Article 50. We will honour the outcome of the 2016 referendum and work to deliver an exit which benefits everyone, whether they voted to Leave or to Remain.

Revoking Article 50, and thereby remaining in the European Union, would undermine both our democracy and the trust that millions of voters have placed in Government.

The Government acknowledges the considerable number of people who have signed this petition. However, close to three quarters of the electorate took part in the 2016 referendum, trusting that the result would be respected. This Government wrote to every household prior to the referendum, promising that the outcome of the referendum would be implemented. 17.4 million people then voted to leave the European Union, providing the biggest democratic mandate for any course of action ever directed at UK Government.

British people cast their votes once again in the 2017 General Election where over 80% of those who voted, voted for parties, including the Opposition, who committed in their manifestos to upholding the result of the referendum.

This Government stands by this commitment.

Revoking Article 50 would break the promises made by Government to the British people, disrespect the clear instruction from a democratic vote, and in turn, reduce confidence in our democracy. As the Prime Minister has said, failing to deliver Brexit would cause “potentially irreparable damage to public trust”, and it is imperative that people can trust their Government to respect their votes and deliver the best outcome for them.

Department for Exiting the European Union.^

Oh where do I start.

I have been hoping some of the 17 million brilliant leave' voters might come up with something tangible that will make the UK great

For some freedom has no price. Take Ireland. They’ve battled for decades since the potato famine of 1845-1849 for freedom of Westminster control.

UK went through two world wars to avoid German control. My father is from Sunderland and experienced World War 2 and evacuation when Sunderland was bombed. Many who live in Sunderland have parents and grandparents who were similarly effected. So they voted leave even though they may stand to lose their jobs.

I knew divorcing ex would make me worse, but for me it was worth the price.

Whether or not UK is better off or worse after leaving the EU has yet to be seen. However, for some revenge is worth more than money in hand.

oldwhyno · 29/03/2019 11:39

What other outcome did anyone actually reasonably expect from a petition? A debate? They've been debating nothing but this for the last 3+ years.

1tisILeClerc · 29/03/2019 11:40

{However, for some revenge is worth more than money in hand.}
Hmmm, adding the word revenge is interesting.
Please don't go to Europe, those with revenge in mind aren't welcome.

PizzaCafe2016 · 29/03/2019 11:45

Please don't go to Europe, those with revenge in mind aren't welcome

I was not welcome in Turkey in the late 90s as I often said that Turkey should never be in EU

jasjas1973 · 29/03/2019 12:05

Yeah right! when these people lose their jobs, their houses & marriages split up.... these same people will be crying "i didn't vote for this"

Only the rich can take such a "principled" stand.

I'd like to know what EU laws are shackling the good people of Sunderland ?

PizzaCafe2016 · 29/03/2019 12:14

I'd like to know what EU laws are shackling the good people of Sunderland ?

There aren’t any which is why they voted leave

Dragongirl10 · 29/03/2019 12:23

What's patronising about it? They're respecting the view of the majority, that's their job

THIS ^^

Songsofexperience · 29/03/2019 13:37

However, for some revenge is worth more than money in hand.

So you voted to stick it to the Hun?...Right, has it occurred to you getting poorer will affect you and your family, not the Schmidts in Berlin?
And anyway, it's a despicable mindset. I'm not going to play top trumps on the subject but I'm pretty sure my family would win this one hands down. The EU was created to avoid another devastating war. It was also to make sure Germany's interests would be intertwined with those of its neighbours. Destroying it isn't very smart.

greathat · 29/03/2019 13:43

Revenge? What a fucking weird concept to bring in! You want revenge on an organisation that was created to help promote peace and productivity in Europe! What's your revenge? Being poorer and a rise in racism?

PizzaCafe2016 · 30/03/2019 04:23

TMay pay to remain deal was defeated for the third time. Hip hip hoorah. Thankfully UK has patriots in government who respect the vote of the 2016 referendum.

Only those who are afraid of change have brainwashed themselves into thinking they will be poorer after UK leaves the EU. Those who think EU prevents wars seems to forget that WW2 was a world war and not confined solely to EU. Japan took part and paid heavily as USA used japan to test the effectiveness of nuclear bombs.

Meretricious · 30/03/2019 05:44

PizzaCafe2016. I’m really not sure what point you are making? You also make the Second World War sound a bit like the World Cup....

TeddyIsaHe · 30/03/2019 06:44

@PizzaCafe2016 so every credible economist is brainwashed? Even Jacob Rees-Mogg said it’ll take 50 years for the UK economy to recover fully. He also tweeted about wanting a second referendum 😂

MimieD · 30/03/2019 06:58

@pizzacafe2016, you do know that the EU was formed AFTER WWII, don't you?!

PizzaCafe2016 · 30/03/2019 07:30

Teddy has misquoted. JRM was discussing with Cameron in 2011 about a second referendum after renegotiations were complete, but in 2016 UK decided to keep the referendum a simple in or out question.

JRM estimates that it will take 50 years for the UK to feel the full benefit of leaving the EU. He did not say that UK would be in a slump for 50 years.

PizzaCafe2016 · 30/03/2019 07:38

To MimieD

Yes EU was formed after WW2, but what does that prove? After two defeats in two World Wars Germany would never try a third World War even if EU had not been formed. USA and Russia could wipe out Germany in a matter of hours with missiles. Rest of EU wouldn’t have to lift a finger.

TheBubGrower · 30/03/2019 08:05

pizza what about the brain washing that euro-phobes have endured for years from the tabloid press about the evils of the EU - that the EU will ban playgrounds, the EU are trying to get rid of mushy peas, the EU wants women to hand in old sex toys... to name just a few. We've been brainwashed for years about how much the EU controls us. And it's all utter nonsense! No wonder people wanted to leave. Not sure there is "brain washing" as such about what impact leaving will have as pretty much all economist experts came out pre brexit vote to say it would be disastrous Hmm and we've heard nothing much that is reassuring since then. Are all the experts brain washed too? Not sure I'm sure brain washed, but yes I AM scared of that kind of change.

Songsofexperience · 30/03/2019 08:59

Japan took part and paid heavily as USA used japan to test the effectiveness of nuclear bombs.

I cannot believe how casual you make it sound. That 'test' involved the loss of at least 800,000 civilian lives including children. It wasn't a 'test' it was a horrible mass murder.

Songsofexperience · 30/03/2019 09:08

I can't stand people who disconnect historical events from their real human cost.
The same people who blather on about no deal like it's a point scoring excercise. There will be a human cost- not on the scale of a war, but real people will lose their livelihoods and perhaps even their health if there is no deal. It is not to be countenanced. It is proof of how flawed direct democracy is.

1tisILeClerc · 30/03/2019 09:12

PizzaCafe2016 is still posting random, ill thought out and inaccurate bollocks, demonstrating that (s)he actually knows and cares very little.
Is this the definition of a troll?

Songsofexperience · 30/03/2019 09:15

Probably and we've fed it way too much.

PizzaCafe2016 · 30/03/2019 09:16

It wasn't a 'test' it was a horrible mass murder

The German test cost 6,000,000 lives including women and children too.

jasjas1973 · 30/03/2019 09:21

leClerc - Pizza is just a reincarnation of the same sort of poster we've had before - someone like whollyfather

Once anyone starts talk about annihilating Germany, we know they live under a bridge.

Songsofexperience · 30/03/2019 09:21

Indeed, the Nazis committed unspeakable horrors involving real people, which is why I would never refer to it or the horrors if the war in such casual language. Or connect it to Brexit in any way shape or form!! I have too much respect for the victims.

PizzaCafe2016 · 30/03/2019 09:28

To LeClerc

No comment made on another thread about EU GDP shrinking relative to the rest of the World even though many more countries have joined the EU. Surely EU GDP should have formed a larger share of the World as it expanded. That it has shrunk is proof that EU is going backwards is it not?

UK has 5th largest GDP, but its Purchase Power Parity is 9th in the World. How can that be? Answer is that UK is a net contributor to the EU and others are net takers from the EU.

My most favourite question which so far nobody has answered is;

What is the benefit of a wealthy person joining up with a poor person? I can see the benefit for the poor person, but none at all for the wealthy person.

Songsofexperience · 30/03/2019 09:28

@pizzacafe2016

'Alle Menschen werden Brüder' - key line in Ode to Joy, written by Friedrich Schiller and anthem of the EU. Those that can't get behind that message are no better than the Nazis they profess to hate so much. Go on keep hating... on your own mate.
