Brexit

The fucking patronising response from the govt to the 6million petition

^This Government will not revoke Article 50. We will honour the result of the 2016 referendum and work with Parliament to deliver a deal that ensures we leave the European Union.

It remains the Government’s firm policy not to revoke Article 50. We will honour the outcome of the 2016 referendum and work to deliver an exit which benefits everyone, whether they voted to Leave or to Remain.

Revoking Article 50, and thereby remaining in the European Union, would undermine both our democracy and the trust that millions of voters have placed in Government.

The Government acknowledges the considerable number of people who have signed this petition. However, close to three quarters of the electorate took part in the 2016 referendum, trusting that the result would be respected. This Government wrote to every household prior to the referendum, promising that the outcome of the referendum would be implemented. 17.4 million people then voted to leave the European Union, providing the biggest democratic mandate for any course of action ever directed at UK Government.

British people cast their votes once again in the 2017 General Election where over 80% of those who voted, voted for parties, including the Opposition, who committed in their manifestos to upholding the result of the referendum.

This Government stands by this commitment.

Revoking Article 50 would break the promises made by Government to the British people, disrespect the clear instruction from a democratic vote, and in turn, reduce confidence in our democracy. As the Prime Minister has said, failing to deliver Brexit would cause “potentially irreparable damage to public trust”, and it is imperative that people can trust their Government to respect their votes and deliver the best outcome for them.

Department for Exiting the European Union.^

Oh where do I start.

17 million people out of 46 million

Population of the UK is 66M so only 26% of the population voted to leave (or only 37% of those on the electoral register). Something so important should never have been a simple majority of votes, there should have been a minimum percentage of the electorate required. And, similar to the Good Friday Agreement there should be another vote to gauge support.

But whatever, the Brexiteers should have respected that a significant minority of the population do not want to leave and there should have been more of a compromise and acknowledgement of the issues around leaving and a very very soft Brexit. Instead the Brexiteers have become more and more entrenched in their position and don't seem to care if they destroy the country in the process. NI will leave, Scotland will leave and Great Britain will be no more.

Respect works both ways, and I'm yet to read or hear of a Remainer showing respect for the fact that the Leave vote won the majority in a public referendum where all eligible people had the opportunity to express their opinion.

BigFatGiant · 27/03/2019 19:56

What else were they supposed to say ‘why did you bother giving us a petition with only 6 million signatures?’, ‘we’re to busy to humour you with a proper response’.

TeddyIsaHe · 27/03/2019 19:57

@FinnegansWhiskers you do know that leaving is just the start of it right? There will be years upon years of negotiations and meetings and deals etc to get through. It’s not all going to stop whenever the govt decide whatever the fuck they’re doing 😂 This is just the beginning.

ClariceCliffe · 27/03/2019 19:58

EggysMom
Well said. I agree wholeheartedly.

Which may well come back to bite them on the backside if there is a second Ref.

OrchidInTheSun · 27/03/2019 20:03

80 million British nationals live outside the UK but bizarrely, their views didn't count. It was a vote by a tiny minority of British citizens.

KennDodd · 27/03/2019 20:11

I'm beginning to think Brexit is just a big waste of time and money. Our young people are overwhelmingly for Remain, they'll just take us back in.

SingingLily · 27/03/2019 20:19

Only expats who had lived abroad for more than 15 years were not allowed to vote. As someone once said of Sean Connery (who was very vociferous about Scottish independence in the run-up to that particular referendum): "This is the man who loves Scotland so much that he lives in the Bahamas". He went very quiet after that.

{Now I can't wait to leave and eagerly await the time when the UK government can get on with running the country. There's much more to the UK than fucking brexit! For nearly 3 years the UK has been running itself.

It's time we had a government who can fulfil the duties they were voted to do....aka running the country!}

Well the good news is that the complete shower that are in Westminster are in charge and will be for a long time to come.
Since it has taken them nearly 3 years to work out how to leave, when it comes to actually negotiating new deals the UK is going to be so fucked. At least the leavers will be happy then.

RomanyQueen1 · 27/03/2019 20:26

In politics nothing happens by accident if it happens you can bet it was planned that way

SingingLily · 27/03/2019 20:28

In fairness, LeClerc, I doubt very much whether Leavers or Remainers are happy with the omnishambles that passes for our Parliament right now. The whole Brexit process has exposed the lot of them as third-rate. I suppose we should be grateful that, in that sense, they've managed to find something on which the whole country can unite.

safariboot · 27/03/2019 20:31

I'm a remainer who signed the petition, and I fully agree with what Andrea Leadsom said last week:

"Should it reach 17.4 million respondents then I am sure there will be a very clear case for taking action

It was worth a shot, but 6 is not 17.

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/03/2019 20:40

Only expats who had lived abroad for more than 15 years were not allowed to vote.

I know of a few expats who applied for a vote in good time and didn't get one. Cynical, suspicious voters might assume that's because someone didn't either want or care about those votes.

If you an expat citizen of the UK you are also a European citizen. Expats of any time abroad should not have even excluded.

SingingLily · 27/03/2019 20:45

That would have required a change in the law. How suspicious would that have looked?

m0therofdragons · 27/03/2019 20:46

My brother lives in Canada and has done for 10 years. He voted leave. It annoyed me at the time that he could have such a significant say when he doesn't live here, have any investments here and won't be affected.

Anyway, claims expats couldn't vote is lies.

Coppersulphate · 27/03/2019 20:50

Children signed it. Robots signed it. I know people who signed it several times. And it dies not overturn the referendum vote.

FinnegansWhiskers · 27/03/2019 22:06

I'm sure everyone will be happy when the decision to leave is made. The sooner the better. This country can't run itself while the leave date is postponed indefinitely. This shitstorm needs closure now!

Meretricious · 27/03/2019 22:38

Of course it doesn’t overturn the referendum. It was the whole tone of ‘the country has decided therefore we shall do it’ that got on my tits.

A majority, but not overwhelming majotiry, decided to take a massive step on incomplete evidence in a vote where the winn8ng campaign acted illegally. And the voter# were lied to. The rubbish that’s going on in the Tory party...surely that should give paise for thought....

That’s the thing you see, in a general election you get to change your mind five years later, with this you don’t..

That the Bahamas is tax free might have something to do with his decision?

tenredthings · 28/03/2019 02:47

Parliament has been exposed to be full of ignorant, self serving twats. I will never vote labour or conservative ever again. If May resigns prepare for a right wing ErG replacement, a hard Brexit and a fucked Britain. Vote green !

PizzaCafe2016 · 28/03/2019 02:50

Has been like for as long as I can remember. Brexit has reinforced it more.

ScarletBitch · 28/03/2019 03:03
