The fucking patronising response from the govt to the 6million petition

^This Government will not revoke Article 50. We will honour the result of the 2016 referendum and work with Parliament to deliver a deal that ensures we leave the European Union.

It remains the Government’s firm policy not to revoke Article 50. We will honour the outcome of the 2016 referendum and work to deliver an exit which benefits everyone, whether they voted to Leave or to Remain.

Revoking Article 50, and thereby remaining in the European Union, would undermine both our democracy and the trust that millions of voters have placed in Government.

The Government acknowledges the considerable number of people who have signed this petition. However, close to three quarters of the electorate took part in the 2016 referendum, trusting that the result would be respected. This Government wrote to every household prior to the referendum, promising that the outcome of the referendum would be implemented. 17.4 million people then voted to leave the European Union, providing the biggest democratic mandate for any course of action ever directed at UK Government.

British people cast their votes once again in the 2017 General Election where over 80% of those who voted, voted for parties, including the Opposition, who committed in their manifestos to upholding the result of the referendum.

This Government stands by this commitment.

Revoking Article 50 would break the promises made by Government to the British people, disrespect the clear instruction from a democratic vote, and in turn, reduce confidence in our democracy. As the Prime Minister has said, failing to deliver Brexit would cause “potentially irreparable damage to public trust”, and it is imperative that people can trust their Government to respect their votes and deliver the best outcome for them.

Department for Exiting the European Union.^

Oh where do I start.

However I think the original Leave petition would now have closed.

I just looked there's a leave the EU without a deal in March 2019 which (like all petitions) has been running for six months.

It is still technically active for two more weeks.

It started in November and took six months to get to 600,275 signatures.

The revoke one started in March got to 6,000,000 in 10 days. It runs until August.

I wonder how long before the petitions system is ditched.

Peregrina · 01/04/2019 09:33

!4 days then is ample time for the Leave petition to add on another 5 and a half million signatures. Come on then Leave voters, get creating those thousands of email addresses in fake names and set to work. Grin

Tanith · 01/04/2019 09:39

As none of these petitions carry any weight I would ignore them all.

You might do so; the Government does not. They have influenced policy before now.

bellinisurge · 01/04/2019 09:39

@GuyFawkes2019 , May I respectfully suggest you change your username so that you don't add to it.

Based on the below post I would say that Government will ignore.

{Funnily enough, I didn't hear of his million supporters coming down from Sunderland last Friday.}

The previous week he was interviewed at a pub in Northampton or somewhere saying there WOULD BE 20 Million arriving in London.
Where did they get to?

colehawlins · 01/04/2019 10:18

Not in the face of a contrary referendum result.

We need a second referendum.

MayhemNowCertain · 02/04/2019 00:58

Revoke Article 50 got the least votes last night.

Second referendum close, but not a majority. Same for Customs Union.

Looks like another Extension will be sought next week. EU need to careful as the more extensions they agree the more it sends out a signal that they are afraid of No Deal?

StormTreader · 02/04/2019 10:35

"Thats because anyone with a single brain cell knows that marching with banners or signing a spurious on-line petition is a complete waste of time."

And that's why we all pay Poll Tax today. Oh, wait, no we don't because people protested the governments decision.

Peregrina · 02/04/2019 13:12

And that's why we all pay Poll Tax today. Oh, wait, no we don't because people protested the governments decision.

There was more - people refusing to pay and going to prison if necessary, and people paying in the amounts in the smallest dribs and drabs which were legal tender, making more work. It also, IMO, caused the real launch of the Scottish move towards independence. This may yet happen.

KissingInTheRain · 02/04/2019 13:18

Mid Staffs by election sank the poll tax. The protests - and riot - were if anything counterproductive.

Peregrina · 02/04/2019 13:41

But would one by election have sunk the poll tax if it hadn't been drawn to people's attention by seeing demonstrations and riots and some upstanding citizens being prepared to go to prison? Add to this people being thoroughly fed up with a Government which was now played out and people felt had been in power for too long.

bellinisurge · 02/04/2019 14:40

I'm old enough to have been liable for the Poll Tax. The demonstrations changed everything. Anything else just confirmed the public mood.

Jux · 02/04/2019 14:58

I still think 'Poll Tax' instead of Council Tax....

Tanith · 02/04/2019 15:30

"Not in the face of a contrary referendum result.

We need a second referendum."

I don't disagree. Unfortunately we aren't getting one of those. Therefore we're doing what we can. Petitions and marches are the only option left to us. We don't have time to sit around, waiting to be granted a 2nd referendum that will probably never happen.

What more would you suggest - that they will allow us?

CountFosco · 02/04/2019 23:25

Funnily enough, I didn't hear of his million supporters coming down from Sunderland

I think they got distracted... here
