No, I'm not confusing anything. I'm pointing out that since people who aren't eligible to vote are signing, the numbers signing can't be compared to the numbers in the referendum vote.

It could be said the petition is more in tune with 'the will of the people', did you know that commonwealth citizens could and did vote in the referendum?

My niece who was 17 at the time couldn't vote even though she has lived her entire life here and intends to continue to live here.

On the other hand a Kiwi on their 'overseas experience' who was leaving the next day could.

The Polish family down the street who chose to make the UK their home couldn't vote, but the student from South African student I taught at that time could.

plinkyplonkyploo · 23/03/2019 06:55

Obviously a petition is not an election. But to quote Andrea Leadsom “Should it reach more than 17.4 million respondents, I am sure there would be a very clear case for taking action.”. If it reached that scale it would be very difficult to dismiss.

Dohangoversgetworseasyougetold · 23/03/2019 07:02

If you emailed No. 10, what did you write? I'm struggling to see through my rage to find something simple, factual and (Obviously) non-abusive.

catburglar · 23/03/2019 07:12

It slowed down a good bit overnight. Maybe running out of people to sign?

BagpussAteMyHomework · 23/03/2019 07:17

It is having a huge effect. It’s been mentioned on the news a lot and MPs are being asked questions about it. It belies the myth that The British Public will accept no outcome other than Brexit. It’s reminded flagging and ground down Remainer MPs that it’s ok to be a remainder and that isn’t treason to think staying wouldn’t be so bad.

Mner2019 · 23/03/2019 07:18

It hasn’t updated in 8 hrs

Just write what you feel..This is the start of what wrote

Dear Mrs May,
Your speech last night was outrageous. You do not speak for me and you are not on my side.
I am coming on the protest march on Saturday with:
[I Iisted People’s jobs]
We are very angry with your government. You have tried to circumvent parliamentary process and refused to listen to other opinions. .....
[Then went on to talk about redlines... but you could mention anything so NI for example. NHS.Schools. Positives of immigration. Bribes to DUP. Suppression of impact assessments. Contempt etc etc etc ]
Yours in disgust,

Dohangoversgetworseasyougetold · 23/03/2019 07:34

Thank you. That's very helpful (and very eloquent).

Bluntness100 · 23/03/2019 07:40

I hope this petition continues to run, people need to share the shit out of it and urge people to make the effort if they agree it should be revoked, even if it's just for a pause to rethink strategy.

Or even if it's just to stick it to thr loathsome Andrea leadsome.who uttered the absoltely appalling words that if it reached 17.4 million she might think about listening.

Aye because it's her decision.

countrygirl99 · 23/03/2019 07:44

#dohangover" I'm going to write that the only reason that I am not on the march is because I have too many animals to care for so she should add me to the total. I will write that I am very concerned about the direction this country is heading in, that my son's partner is frequently on the receiving end of abuse because people think she is Polish and that is a result of her rhetoric as much as anyone else's.

2rachtint · 23/03/2019 07:45

I've tried to sign twice and not receive confirmation email (checked junk). Signed petitions before and always received it. Wonder how how many others are in my position.

IceRebel · 23/03/2019 07:48

3,919,388 signatures now

It seems to have slowed down, but I suspect they're still slowly adding those who mass voted in previous days. Especially since many had to wait hours for their confirmation email.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 23/03/2019 07:49

It doesn't seem to be updating.

Oh wow! Will be slower on a Saturday morning I guess. 4 million by lunchtime? I suspect everyone heading for the march today will have already signed but hoping the coverage will prompt more 🙏.

IceRebel · 23/03/2019 08:13

4 million by lunchtime?

Nah i'm going to say 4 million by 9.15am this morning Grin maybe 4.3 by lunchtime.

littlebillie · 23/03/2019 08:17

I still haven't received the signature email 48 hrs

Dohangoversgetworseasyougetold · 23/03/2019 08:18

Thank you, countrygirl99. I said she should add me to the total too.

In the end, I didn't have much to say that other, cleverer people won't have said better, so I focused on:

(1) the lack of a clear picture as to WHY people voted Leave and what they wanted; and
(2) the fact that she is alienating the core Tory support base, e.g. people like my father, who has loved the Conservative party all his life and cannot understand why they are trashing everything he believes in (the economy, stability, the City etc).

Personally, I don't give a shiny shit if the Conservative party destroys itself, but surely it should matter to them that chasing the fickle UKIP vote might costing them the larger pool of voters who thought they were a "safe pair of hands"?

Theresa May strikes me as a fanatic though, so I doubt she cares about anything except pushing her own will though.
