Westminstenders: The Last Rites

After May's disastrous speech to the nation, we've hit the impasse once and for all.

She managed to enrage everyone from Brexiteers to hard Remainers and everyone in between. It was so poorly judged it's difficult to know where to begin. It just feeds the division and anger in our society in all quarters.

It's also massively undermines her appeal to the EU for an extension. If France thought we were a political basket case they were well shot of, and didn't want more social contagion from before 8pm, then they certainly won't have changed their minds since.

May's speech was that of a would be dictator. After next Friday, she effectively has both the justification and the power to act upon those instincts. She has spoken out against parliamentary democracy and consistently disregarded the law.

It's hard to see any outcome but no deal with no extension at this point. We are no waiting on a miracle to save us and that's no more than a forlorn hope. Something we hold on to, until reality presents itself.

The Last Rites of British Democracy have been served this week.

And now we face the wait for what seems now inevitable.

A senior EU official tells me that on the basis of what has been decided, "in agreement with PM May":

  • either WA approved by UK MPs next week, then orderly Brexit on 22 May

or

  • 12 April disorderly Brexit, or request for another extension
pepinana · 21/03/2019 22:16

Good Friday is 19 April.

NoWordForFluffy · 21/03/2019 22:16

19th April is Good Friday.

GD12 · 21/03/2019 22:16

@Horehound They want us to say by April 12 whether we're taking part in EU elections or not. If we are then they'll give us a long extension, if not we're no dealing on April 12. It's an invite to MPs to finally pass Cooper/Boles and do something. It backs all the parties in the UK into a corner and forces an answer. This is it, either MPs do something or were gone on the 12th.

OogieMcBoogie · 21/03/2019 22:16

Will Yellowhammer still swing into operation next week or is that likely to be put on ice?

I hear that none of her ministers knew about Mrs May’s ‘coup’ broadcast from the bunker last night & they are mostly appalled. It was apparently Philip May’s idea. Whether leave or remain, most ministers think she can’t conduct any further negotiations beyond next week

Sounds like May's decisions are being dictated by her husband who has a financial interest in No Deal. Surely this is a massive conflict of interest.

CandidCat It's been mentioned several times on here over the past year or two that the Mays have a conflict of interest, but for him to influence her to this extent is shocking.

Arborea · 21/03/2019 22:18

I've managed to get a seat on a coach (from Huddersfield in case any of my fellow Pennine MN-ers are interested) - I will dig out my red toothbrush and hope to see many of you there!

Icantreachthepretzels · 21/03/2019 22:18

Yeh so this bit expects UK to indicate a way forward for the consideration of EUCO indicates that they'd expect us to ask if we want a longer extension, a revoke, new agreement blah blah. It's been left open. It does not say "that's it, games up!"

But the problem has never been the EU, they have been helpful at every turn. The problem is May's intransigence over her deal - which won't pass - and her decision to refuse elections and crash us out if she doesn't get what she wants.
If Parliament can't find a way to stop May - and they have been failing for a long time now - then there is nothing the EU can do for us and the game will be up.

Horehound · 21/03/2019 22:19

It's an invite to MPs to finally pass Cooper/Boles and do something exactly
So likelihood is something will pass or be extended.

Alexander Clarkson @ aphclarkson
So in @faisalislam's report just now, Vince Cable claimed that Theresa May in her meeting with opposition leaders said that "the people voted for pain" when asked about the damage No Deal might wreak.

19th april is good Friday.

GD12 · 21/03/2019 22:21

Cooper/Boles should pass next week but who the hell knows. Its one last chance for the UK and its MPs

Horehound · 21/03/2019 22:21

I honestly don't see it going that far where every single option cannot proceed except for No deal.
I'd rather believe that for now :)

RedToothBrush · 21/03/2019 22:22

Donald Tusk @eupresident
EU27 unanimously agrees on its response to UK’s requests. I will now meet PM @theresa_may. #brexit #euco

And if the pleasure of my company isn't enough to attract you, how about knowing that Captain Jean-Luc Picard has paid for your trip (tbf I've made a donation too) www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/news/politics/general-election/sir-patrick-stewart-is-paying-for-yorkshire-protesters-to-travel-to-an-anti-brexit-march-in-london-1-9649881

HepzibahHumbug · 21/03/2019 22:24

Icanreach 1.75 mill. Is that real?? Shock

golondrina · 21/03/2019 22:25

It's passed 1.9m now

NoWordForFluffy · 21/03/2019 22:25

So in @faisalislam's report just now, Vince Cable claimed that Theresa May in her meeting with opposition leaders said that "the people voted for pain" when asked about the damage No Deal might wreak.

Bloody hell. It's their job to protect the U.K., not just blindly follow the will of a tiny majority who voted for 'the pain'. Particularly when they didn't know exactly what they were voting for.

Does she want to inflict this pain as some kind of punishment?!

CordeliaEarhart · 21/03/2019 22:26

1.95mil now. Clearly still processing the delayed votes from earlier in the evening.

Random18 · 21/03/2019 22:26

The March this weekend has been perfectly timed.

I would love to be there but the long journey to London with 2 kids in tow is just not possible.

Hope it goes brilliantly though and I think it will be super well attended.

Looked for events
More local but nothing 😭

HepzibahHumbug · 21/03/2019 22:26

Omg petition not very short of 2 mill (1.94+) Shock

Icantreachthepretzels · 21/03/2019 22:27

"the people voted for pain" when asked about the damage No Deal might wreak.

Well, she's officially crossed the line into fucking crazy tyrannical dictator.

chocolateworshipper · 21/03/2019 22:27

Decision reached. Here we go ...
