Theresa May has asked for a short extension until 30th June, after Cabinet Brexiteers stopped her asking for a longer extension.

She has not stated the purpose of the extension beyond 'to pass her deal'. Which does not have a majority, because if it did May would be overturn the standing order Bercow invoked to block MVIII.

The EU have not reacted well to the request. Noises from France sound negative.

That doesn't mean we won't get one, but its not looking good. If we do it looks unlikely to go beyond May 23rd and EU elections.

We do not expect a response from the EU until Monday.

May has therefore in practice reinstated the possibility of no deal next Friday. Or at the end of any extension we do get.

She is due to give a speech on a podum at 6pm tonight.

Parliament has called an emergency debate on the extension to try and take control of debate. It, so far, looks like no more that the Brexit Secretary filibusting. Its going round and round in circles going no where.

Meanwhile rumours that Operation Yellowhammer will kick in on Monday are in the air. That's the first steps to martial law to manage no deal. This is very bad.

9 days to go.

Robert Harris
@Robert_Harris
That could prove the most fatal Prime Ministerial statement made in Downing Street since Chamberlain stuck his head out the window in 1938 and declared peace for our time. He apologised to Parliament 3 days later, pleading exhaustion. Wonder if May should do the same

TheElementsSong · 20/03/2019 22:50

We thought about just one of us going, or alternatively getting Leaver PiLs to babysit for the weekend so both DH and I could go 😈 But our DC really do want to march with us, so we felt it was unfair if we left them behind.

I think we’ll make a donation equivalent to 4 coach tickets to enable others.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 20/03/2019 22:50

Cordelia I take your point but what precisely do you think Theresa May should do now?
If you believe she should resign who do you think should be nominated to take over as Prime Minister ?

CordeliaEarhart · 20/03/2019 22:51

icantreachthepretzels, are you aware that you are arguing for honesty and integrity as well as bravery? From a politician?

AutumnCrow · 20/03/2019 22:51

In a way I'm glad she called out MP's on their recent behaviour. The lot of them have done nothing but argue and vote everything down

CoachBombay I have watched BBC Parliament live over many days and weeks and I think that that was a silly and unfair thing of you to say. MPs like Soubry, Greening, Benn, Black and Hobhouse have been showing leadership, passion, and a deep sense of care for the people they represent.

RedToothBrush · 20/03/2019 22:51

Wes streeting MP @ wesstreeting
I’ve thought long and hard before saying this, but @theresa_may knows that MPs across the House are subjected to death threats - some very credible. Her speech was incendiary and irresponsible. If any harm comes to any of us, she will have to accept her share of responsibility.

@Amoregentlemanlikemanner
Revoke is the least worst option, in fact it's the best option”

I wish that Parliament agreed with you but only Ken Clarke had the courage to agree with you There isn’t a majority in parliament to revoke

WaterQuarter · 20/03/2019 22:53

I agree with Wes Streeting.

Icantreachthepretzels · 20/03/2019 22:53

are you aware that you are arguing for honesty and integrity as well as bravery? From a politician?

I know I know - it's me that lives in unicorn land ... I'll see myself out.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 20/03/2019 22:53

Jason I think that revoke would be the best option where it not for the fact that the referendum was lawfully held and that many people still support its results

CordeliaEarhart · 20/03/2019 22:54

I didn't say I think she should resign. I said I think she should admit she made a mistake and ask for an extension for long enough to actually get cross party support.

I have no respect for politicians who walk away in the difficult times (looking at you, David Cameron).

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 20/03/2019 22:54

Well, I’ve finally watched her speech. 3.52 minutes of my life I’m never getting back.

In a speech with so much to hate the bit that really, really got to me was when she said it’s time for MPs to decide what they want, her deal, No Deal or No Brexit and she qualified No Brexit with its dire consequences, destroying the public’s faith etc etc but No Deal just sailed by with no mention of any consequences at all. Angry

We’re away for the next few days with no opportunity to get any extra supplies in until at least Monday. Bit worried about that...

Tonsilss · 20/03/2019 22:55

Elements - I'm sure that you and the DCs will regret it if you don't go. Just one long but very important day. Why not let your DCs feel, in later years, that they did their bit?

hayf · 20/03/2019 22:55

Petition signed, I've been posting on here for a while but have name changed after an overly indulgent post so hope I can hop back in again.

Utterly outraged with that repugnant speech tonight, the only possible grace I can think of is that she's said to the EU she's willing to sacrifice herself, her reputation, her premiership and her future to get this deal over the line and avoid no deal, and will resign as soon as it's done. It's the only plausible explanation I can think of for what she did...

Unprecedented drug shortage linked to Brexit, NHS bosses say

Hospitals across England are experiencing medicine shortages due to "stockpiling and price pressure as the Brexit deadline approaches", NHS Providers has told BBC Newsnight.

The trade association warned some trusts had seen shortages of up to 160 different drugs in the past six weeks.

This was compared with just 25 to 30 drugs in normal times, it said.

The Department of Health said there was "no evidence" the "small number of supply issues" were related to Brexit.

Mental health drugs and those used to treat rarer conditions are among the drugs reportedly affected by shortages.

Saffron Cordery, the chief executive of NHS Providers, which represents trusts in England, told Newsnight one trust in England had reported a shortage of 300 different drugs.

"Trusts up and down the country are telling us that they have experienced a sharp spike in shortages of drugs in the past month," she said.

"We cannot confirm with absolute certainty that it is Brexit but the timing and unprecedented nature of these shortages suggest a correlation with Brexit preparation.

We've not left yet.

Yet.

PestyMachtubernahme · 20/03/2019 22:56

There isn’t a majority in parliament to revoke

Nobody knows what there is a majority for, they have never done an indicative vote. That is why she has failed. We were rumoured to be a democracy.

Icantreachthepretzels · 20/03/2019 22:56

I think we’ll make a donation equivalent to 4 coach tickets to enable others.

I think that's a wonderful thing for you to do. Is there a more local rally you could attend? I know Truro are holding one - maybe there are others. (if London is distant I imagine Truro is worse Grin)

I have also thought along the same lines as Wes Streeting since I heard the contents of TM's speech.

LurpakIsTheOnlyButter · 20/03/2019 22:56

@pesty

Nevermind needs improvement. She should be in whatever is below special measures.

If she was a school you would have homeschooled your DC.

GroovieGazelloo · 20/03/2019 22:58

So when she says “I’m on your side”, who's she talking to ?
Sounds to me like she is only talking to the Leavers instead of trying to unite the people in general .

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 20/03/2019 22:59

I think that Is a coherent position Icantreachthepretzels
Do you think there is any chance of any Prime Minister doing that? If not what would have to change for a a prime minister to feel they could do that ?

Random18 · 20/03/2019 23:00

Jason I think that revoke would be the best option where it not for the fact that the referendum was lawfully held and that many people still support its results

What was sold to the country is not what’s happening. There were so many lies. So imo it was not lawfully held.

I really don’t want another ref as I think my brain is not big enough to understand it all and others are the same. There should never have been a referendum

I do think PM needs to take ownership and say we’ve messed up and revoke but it’s obvious it will no deal over that.

So if a PV is needed then so be it.

If it pisses off someone who has only ever voted once in this ref and will never vote again then I don’t give a dam

TatianaLarina · 20/03/2019 23:01

There isn’t a majority in parliament to revoke

Parliament has never been pitched with a binary choice: no deal or revoke.

Until today Revoke has been too hot a potato to touch. Not even Remainers MPs would admit to favouring Revoke. And it unnecessary when there were other preferable options such as extension.

Now there are no more options.

RedToothBrush · 20/03/2019 23:01

Jack Blanchard @jack_blanchard
Potential Lab 'switcher' Lisa Nandy tells @Peston May has blown it. "There's absolutely no chance she is going to win over MPs in sufficient numbers after that statement. It was an attack on liberal democracy itself... I will not support a gov that takes such a reckless approach"

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 20/03/2019 23:02

This was the debate on the last Revoke petition in March

Hopefully now, as every other avenue has shut down; Revoke could be on the table.

Just out of interest, if we do leave with no deal, then things start going t*ts upin the country, and the Leavers say “oh shit, we mad3 a mistake”
How the hell do we get back into the EU?
