Theresa May has asked for a short extension until 30th June, after Cabinet Brexiteers stopped her asking for a longer extension.

She has not stated the purpose of the extension beyond 'to pass her deal'. Which does not have a majority, because if it did May would be overturn the standing order Bercow invoked to block MVIII.

The EU have not reacted well to the request. Noises from France sound negative.

That doesn't mean we won't get one, but its not looking good. If we do it looks unlikely to go beyond May 23rd and EU elections.

We do not expect a response from the EU until Monday.

May has therefore in practice reinstated the possibility of no deal next Friday. Or at the end of any extension we do get.

She is due to give a speech on a podum at 6pm tonight.

Parliament has called an emergency debate on the extension to try and take control of debate. It, so far, looks like no more that the Brexit Secretary filibusting. Its going round and round in circles going no where.

Meanwhile rumours that Operation Yellowhammer will kick in on Monday are in the air. That's the first steps to martial law to manage no deal. This is very bad.

9 days to go.

Thanks for replying

“For a start do indicative votes. And adhere to the results. “

Can you think of a motion that would be acceptable both to the houses of Parliament and the European Union ?

CordeliaEarhart · 20/03/2019 22:37

Right now, I think she should admit she made a mistake in not seeking cross-party support before she began negotiations, seek a long extension and do just that. At the outset, the "red lines" should have been set by a cross-party committee and negotiations should ALWAYS have been based on what can get through parliament.

By way of comparison, tonight there was a debate on sex and relationship education. It was clear that there were concerns on all sides (religious freedom vs LGBT rights; parental consent vs rights of the child) but it was also clear that a general consensus has been reached and we have legislation which has broad support and will be implemented. I have strong personal and professional opinions on this, but accept that the legislation is balanced and (overall) respects the variety of opinions across various groups in the country.

A way forward can be found, even on divisive issues, should the government be determined to listen to, and respect, a range of opinions. Parliament can work really well. The way TM has handled Brexit has been appalling.

Icantreachthepretzels · 20/03/2019 22:37

I think there is only one person entitled to criticise Theresa May and that is Ken Clarke

You're right. The plebs really mustn't speak badly of our beloved fuhrer.
Oh no wait ... she holds public office in what is supposed to be a democracy. Everyone and their dog is entitled to criticise her, it's part of free speech Hmm

SusanWalker · 20/03/2019 22:39

Check your local 4EU group as they may be doing a local rally for people who can't travel to London. We can't go as DS won't cope with the coach ride and the crowds. But there is a rally in Truro so we will be attending that instead. Hopefully, if DS is feeling well enough.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 20/03/2019 22:39

“he would find some themes emerging: people are fed up with austerity, they value the NHS, they want to see their children's schools funded properly, the housing market is broken, Universal Credit.”

But half the population think we can improve this by leaving European Union and half the population think we can improve this by staying in the European Union. So which half do you think she should listen to?

Random18 · 20/03/2019 22:39

@amoregentlrmanlikemanner that was said half joking but she is dangerous, she is destroying our country. Leave or Remain she is not working for any of us now.
I don’t know where we go from here.

Lonelycrab · 20/03/2019 22:40

Best thread title so far imo. I was doing exactly that. more like swearing uncontrollably

Thanks so much red and everyone, long time lurker very grateful for all the wisdom and intelligence here on these threads. This is madness and I feel like we’re plunging into an abyssSad

HesterThrale · 20/03/2019 22:42

People keep saying, 'She's under the power of the ERG'; 'The ERG are running things'; 'She only invited Brexiter cabinet ministers to the meeting tonight'; ... etc.
One conclusion could be, that she IS pretty much ERG. She agrees with them, instead of being influenced by them.

I'm marching alone, hopefully others will turn upGrinGrinGrinGrin

PestyMachtubernahme · 20/03/2019 22:42

If Theresa May was an efficient PM, the WA would have been signed off in Sept / Oct as scheduled. It wasn't, entirely down to the way TM handled the situation.

I shall criticise her as requiring improvement. Even though, I can acknowledge that her deal was pretty much the only one available with the interesting red lines she set.

Brexit is not working. MPs are not prepared to sign it, for a multitude of reasons. Maybe it was a rather poor idea.

Random18 · 20/03/2019 22:42

So when we do go out with No Deal, what happens about the fact Parliament has voted against No Deal ever. Are there repurchasing?

Random18 · 20/03/2019 22:43

*repurcussions bloody auto correct

Pilcrow - yes , that too.

And, when I saw that on the stand was a unicorn, I remembered myself getting out my passport in the past, looking at that same symbol and feeling safe, proud and confident.

She doesn't represent what I stand for. I do hope that this next week will be about values and not about " oh, I'm sick of it. Just let's move on laissez-faire". Unicorns should be about dreams and hopes. Not to be downtrodden.

Her mouth moved but she didn't say anything.

TatianaLarina · 20/03/2019 22:44

I don’t know where we go from here.

The only thing that could save us is Parliament taking over tomorrow. But I think they’d need the SAS.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 20/03/2019 22:44

What I mean is that Ken Clarke told MPs that this is what would happen and for that reason he voted against triggering article 50

Of course you’re free to criticise the Prime Minister Prime Minister just as I’m free to say that I think she’s a decent person doing the best she can and that I can’t think of anyone who would’ve done a better job

I think the accusations being levelled are much better levelled at David Cameron

CordeliaEarhart · 20/03/2019 22:45

So which half do you think she should listen to?

Neither. I'm a big Remain person. I'm a huge fan of the EU and think that working towards an ever closer union the way forward. But half the country think the opposite. So we need to meet in the middle. TM's mistake all along has been to insist that "meet in the middle" means the same as "do as I say". Compromise can never be found that way.

Backlash for the Conservatives is little comfort. But some comfort.

Somerville · 20/03/2019 22:46

I wanted to do another bulk oline shop immediately after May's speech, and it took a few minutes and lots of attempts to log in to both the supermarkets with whom I have accounts. Panic buying ahoy.

TatianaLarina · 20/03/2019 22:47

Of course you’re free to criticise the Prime Minister Prime Minister just as I’m free to say that I think she’s a decent person doing the best she can and that I can’t think of anyone who would’ve done a better job

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 20/03/2019 22:48

“I don’t know where we go from here.”

Me neither. I think the withdrawal agreement is the least worst option

Icantreachthepretzels · 20/03/2019 22:49

So which half do you think she should listen to?

I don't think she should 'listen to the country'. I think she should bloody well read all the damning reports her own people, the experts and the bank of England have given her that show the amount of damage brexit is going to cause. I think she should listen when the health minister says says he cannot guarantee people won't die. I think she should listen to the heads of supermarket chains and commerce who tell her that there will be shortfall in the food supply.
And then I think she should come out on that prissy little podium of hers and explain to the nation that back in 2016 some underhand politicians (not her) sold the people a lie. She has tried her hardest to deliver on these false promises but now it is clear that we cannot continue down such a path without causing irrevocable harm to the economy, to people's living standards and even causing deaths. Therefore it is with great regret that she must revoke article 50 and shelve the question of brexit until such a time as the house can decide what shape and form it would like brexit to take. Once that is decided - the question can be put to the people again and this time they can vote ion something concrete - not lies and unicorns.

This speech would take her from being the very worst Prime minister we have ever had to the very bravest.

It isn't about what the 'people' think they want. It is about the harm that will befall them if we go through with this. And her job as a politician - the lead politician - is to act in the people's best interests.

and by the way, Theresa we all know it's you posting. stop trying

Jason118 · 20/03/2019 22:49

@Amoregentlemanlikemanner
Revoke is the least worst option, in fact it's the best option

PortiaCastis · 20/03/2019 22:49

SusanWalker. Just to show solidarity with the Truro march, I'm on the Lizard but will be going up to London on the night train to Paddington as no young dc so I wish you well and hope there's a good turn out
