John Bercow has stepped in. We've long made the point, that the position of Speaker was utterly crucial to the outcome of Brexit. However this ruling was long warned as a possibility. It was somewhat overlooked by all (including me).

We are now faced with the bizarre narrative that May was just about to be able to get her deal through, and it's now simply Bercow who has tried to sabotage Brexit.

The reality is that his ruling has the effect of making BOTH no deal And a lengthy extension (possibly with a PV) much more likely.

May now has to embrace one of these option (by accident or design) or find a way to substantially change the terms of her deal as put to the Commons, either through negotiation with the EU or bolting something significantly different to her deal like a variation of the Kyle Amendment (a PV based on her deal or remain). Or find a majority to overturn the standing order that Bercow has cited as the reason for his block.

This block also might apply to the Benn amendment (indicative votes) or other PV amendments. Which could equally be problematic going forward.

In reality Bercow has upped the stakes and forced May to do something meaningful rather than simply holding a gun to MPs heads to vote. Hurrah for parliamentary Sovereignty and limiting the abuse of power of the executive!?!

It's a completely neutral move in practice. The HoC has tied itself in knots with how it's voted for political reason rather than for the national interest. The British Constitution has just stood up for itself. Bercow is just a useful target to blame for the incompetence of the entire house for the last 3 years.

The billion pound question this morning is where does that now leave us?

The honest answer is I'm damned if I know.

Maybe the EU will come up with a magic bullet for May, maybe the Cabinet can come up with a magic bullet, maybe May will take the political magic bullet of a long extension or revocation or maybe we'll just all shoot ourselves in the head and foot with no deal.

I have no idea.

10 days to go.

I'll try to watch the footage of Yvette Cooper's question along with the rest when I get home, but if the transcript is correct it does sound like there was a note of desperation, understandable really. However, notice the EU referendum vote in Wakefield, which can be found here:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/politics/eu_referendum/results/local/w

Her constituents voted to leave, and nationally there were more votes for leave. Pretty obvious what she has to do IMO.

prettybird · 20/03/2019 13:16

I think May will be lucky (if Reuters is correct) if the EU allows an extension as long as Shock 23 May, as it could be argued that April 12 is the actual cliff edge, being the latest date by which EU Parliament elections can be organised for the window in May.

It's not as if that shorter date should come as a surprise - we (non-experts Wink) have been pointing it out on these threads for yonks Confused

SparklySneakers · 20/03/2019 13:17

Fuck

DGRossetti · 20/03/2019 13:18

So what detailed plans will May submit as supporting evidence for an extension ? Maybe she should ask people who have had to provide supporting evidence for ESA and/or PIP ? I'm sure they'd be thrilled to help her ....

saxatablesalt · 20/03/2019 13:18

It's going to be no deal isn't it.

Sostenueto · 20/03/2019 13:23

If TM thinks she will get WA through after standing there blaming Parliament as the culprits of this national crisis for not voting for her deal then she definitely has another think coming! Who shouted resign during PMQ?

TheMostBoringPersonEver · 20/03/2019 13:23

@bearbehind where did you see this please?

BlackCatFan · 20/03/2019 13:27

But surely now it's up to the Speaker to decide whether a further vote will be allowed next week? So if he says no then that's it. Am I right?

Bearbehind · 20/03/2019 13:27

Here

Loletta · 20/03/2019 13:29

I lost track of all the amendments passed in the last few weeks. Want there am amendment about holding indicative votes of MV2 failed? Did that pass or not??

TatianaLarina · 20/03/2019 13:31

Even if Bercow allows another vote the ERG are absolutely clear that there are enough of them to vote WA down even if the DUP ‘fold.’

PestyMachtubernahme · 20/03/2019 13:34

So there needs to be a motion to revoke, with an amendment that if that motion fails then May's deal should be accepted. Not neutral enough --at all- is it.

PestyMachtubernahme · 20/03/2019 13:34

strike through fail

DGRossetti · 20/03/2019 13:35

Anyone else imagining one of those (real life Shock) cases where there's a huddle around the prison governors desk waiting for a call from the capitol commuting the death sentence ?

dreichuplands · 20/03/2019 13:37

Is it the EU commission that decides on accepting the delay ?
I see the reports saying they will only accept a longer delay and I wouldn't blame them for this decision but do they decide this?

1tisILeClerc · 20/03/2019 13:38

Maybe some music while we wait.

RedToothBrush · 20/03/2019 13:39

Any French readers here?

Am led to believe this is Macron (as opposed to a nameless French official as yesterday) saying no extension and has just been published.

Emmanuel Macron refuse de reporter la date du Brexit
Theresa May demande un report de la date du Brexit au 30 juin. Le président français s'y opposera, entraînant de fait le Conseil européen.

Irrespective of questions over the date, the EU asked for a plan and they haven’t given her one.

Norbert Röttgen @n_roettgen

#May just asked #EU for short #Brexit extension. But without backing by cabinet and parliament her request is meaningless. @JunckerEU is right: EU leaders should defer decision until #UK presents an approved plan. EU cannot become accomplice of May’s internal tactical manoeuvres.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 20/03/2019 13:42

It's going to be no deal isn't it

Nothing in recent events has convinced me that no deal is off the table. Crash out by accident is still very much a possible outcome.

dreichuplands · 20/03/2019 13:43

louise MP's have to represent their constituency as they see best. It would be a dereliction if duty to believe one thing to be in their interests and vote another way. I accept that MP's in remain constituencies who believe in Leave have a right to vote that way, however frustrating that is.

TheMostBoringPersonEver · 20/03/2019 13:43

Emmanuel Macron refuses to postpone Brexit date
Theresa May requests a postponement of the Brexit date to June 30th. The French president will oppose it, effectively driving the European Council.

^^translation?

It doesn’t really matter what was in the letter Jeremy Hunt is replying to (below); everyone got exactly the same back from him, regardless of what they wrote:

“Dear XXXXXX,
Thank you for writing again about your continued concerns about the Brexit process.
I think there is now an opportunity to secure support for the deal we have. I appreciate your frustrations – in reality the difficulty is caused by a hung parliament. All sides in the debate (strong Remainers worried about no deal, strong Brexiteers worried about this deal, the DUP and the Labour Party) are exploiting the fragility of the government’s majority to maximise their leverage – but the penny seems to be dropping finally that unless we come together as a parliament and as a country the outcome will be far worse for all of us.
Most people – and most of my constituents – respect the referendum result and want to get on with but also want to avoid the potential disruption of no deal. That is within our grasp so we must now see the bigger picture and vote for the deal we have.
Thank you again for writing.
Best wishes
Jeremy“

Would you believe it....

Someone has just knocked on my door to try to sell the conservative party to me.

I can guarantee he wishes he hadn't. Both barrels he got.
