John Bercow has stepped in. We've long made the point, that the position of Speaker was utterly crucial to the outcome of Brexit. However this ruling was long warned as a possibility. It was somewhat overlooked by all (including me).

We are now faced with the bizarre narrative that May was just about to be able to get her deal through, and it's now simply Bercow who has tried to sabotage Brexit.

The reality is that his ruling has the effect of making BOTH no deal And a lengthy extension (possibly with a PV) much more likely.

May now has to embrace one of these option (by accident or design) or find a way to substantially change the terms of her deal as put to the Commons, either through negotiation with the EU or bolting something significantly different to her deal like a variation of the Kyle Amendment (a PV based on her deal or remain). Or find a majority to overturn the standing order that Bercow has cited as the reason for his block.

This block also might apply to the Benn amendment (indicative votes) or other PV amendments. Which could equally be problematic going forward.

In reality Bercow has upped the stakes and forced May to do something meaningful rather than simply holding a gun to MPs heads to vote. Hurrah for parliamentary Sovereignty and limiting the abuse of power of the executive!?!

It's a completely neutral move in practice. The HoC has tied itself in knots with how it's voted for political reason rather than for the national interest. The British Constitution has just stood up for itself. Bercow is just a useful target to blame for the incompetence of the entire house for the last 3 years.

The billion pound question this morning is where does that now leave us?

The honest answer is I'm damned if I know.

Maybe the EU will come up with a magic bullet for May, maybe the Cabinet can come up with a magic bullet, maybe May will take the political magic bullet of a long extension or revocation or maybe we'll just all shoot ourselves in the head and foot with no deal.

I have no idea.

10 days to go.

Nick Gutteridge@nick_gutteridge

PM requests extension to June 30.

EU unlikely to say no but will want to see PM has a workable plan to get the deal ratified during this delay.

Senior EU dip: 'Give us any kind of substance and we’ll be more willing to help you out.
But not just a prolongation of this situation.'

I wish she'd do a Cameron.

RussellSprout · 20/03/2019 12:43

I don't want to crash out any more than the next person, but I do think Treeza has a bit of a 'bloody nerve' assuming that this will automatically by granted by the EU and a small part of me is willing the EU to veto. Maybe one of the smaller countries could take one for the team.....

BigChocFrenzy · 20/03/2019 12:45

chevvy All the likely suspects to take over would be far worse
Boris / Gove / Leadsom / JRM ..... 🤮
A back catalogue of horrors from the ERG

tobee · 20/03/2019 12:45

To be fair I think the "informing" that they are "seeking " an extension rather than asking is probably down to formal speak.

Listening to Brexitcast last night Katya Adler said that asking for a longer delay and then only needing a short delay was safer. Asking for a short delay and then having to ask again for an extension is far more risky. So, quel surprise, May goes for the riskier, ERG pleasing option.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/03/2019 12:46

tbh, I don't think the letter is that poor
A bit opaque & waffly, but not as bad as she usually is

PestyMachtubernahme · 20/03/2019 12:46

In a no-deal scenario, UK nationals may no longer be able to use their EHICs when travelling to the EU.

ie get some travel insurance

BigChocFrenzy · 20/03/2019 12:48

Oh sorry, this is the REAL letter she sent !

Crikey I thought Yvette was going to cry just now, you could feel the frustration & upset.

cherin · 20/03/2019 12:52

Pesty : that was already a given - the EHIC card covers only for reciprocal agreement, and it would cease to be valid on the day of the formal exit (at the end of transition period, or crash out day).
IF YOU DO ONE, CHECK THE SMALL PRINT! there's a very cheap one called (you guess it) EIHC which only covers if you have a valid EIHC card and would therefore be completely useless post brexit. I called the customer care of Zurich earlier and they confirmed that they can't say anything about the future insurances, but currently their policies for annual multi trip family cover (which I paid 43£) do not require any EHIC...

1tisILeClerc · 20/03/2019 12:57

Quite a decent letter if my DC had written it, requesting an extension to handing in homework.
For the Prime Minister of a country that had an empire straddling half the globe, bloody pathetic and shifting blame for her incompetence.

Please can the EU refuse ANY delay. There is no sense of realism in Westminster at all, and no hint of when any might materialise. This is shit that the UK has to deal with alone.

LurpakIsTheOnlyButter · 20/03/2019 13:01

Holy shit

Just finished watching PMQs.

I stand by my view. Maybot is engineering a no deal on 29th and she has done it on purpose. The wording of her request to the EU is undeniably foot Stampy and will be refused without doubt. She has asked for the impossible.

Bitch.

DGRossetti · 20/03/2019 13:03

Since we are in a default mood of mind, I think the default Eu position is no extension, with an exception for a clear reason and proven ability to deliver it from the UK.

As I said yesterday, sounds fair to me.

SparklySneakers · 20/03/2019 13:04

Yeah all Bercow's fault for scuppering her third meaningless vote Confused

You're not alone.

I was watching the backbenchers’ discussion in HOC last week.
Sometime very salient points stated in a polite, reasonable manner.
That’s until the bully boys came in with their lies, evasion and insults.

golondrina · 20/03/2019 13:07

pmk

1tisILeClerc · 20/03/2019 13:07

{Yeah all Bercow's fault for scuppering her third meaningless vote }
More difficult to justify perhaps, but not scuppered.

The irony of Britannia sinking under the waves because of some legislation a few hundred years ago.

PestyMachtubernahme · 20/03/2019 13:08

Cherin I know. Hasenstein asked about the EHIC so I have provided the latest link (published yesterday).

Hasenstein get insurance, really sorry you are being burdened with extra hassles at this already difficult time. Flowers

OublietteBravo · 20/03/2019 13:08

What the actual fuckity fuck does she think she is doing? Is she trying to manoeuvre into a position where she believes can claim she was ‘forced’ to revoke A50 by the EU? If so, she’s utterly deranged. That’s a recipe for major civil unrest. Or has she actually convinced herself that unicorns exist?

Forget the UK.
Forget Parliament.
Forget the people.
Think of the party.

Even the Nazi Party leaders were less obssesed than May ...

saxatablesalt · 20/03/2019 13:11

I'm so furious that this has happened. The whole thing is a disgusting mess that has made me ashamed to be British.

Bearbehind · 20/03/2019 13:12

Apparently the EU have said no.

Extend to either 23 May or end of the year.

Neither of which will achieve much.

Surely it has to be no deal or revoke now.

LittleSF · 20/03/2019 13:13

It defies all logic but the plan seems to be to force the EU to reject the extension as it doesn't include anything new and because the EU can't have a situation where the UK refuses to hold elections to the European Parliament, scheduled for the end of May. Then TM will try to force the deal through the HoC.

In 9 days.

Utterly, mind-blowingly bonkers!
