Westminstenders: Neglectful Drunkeness!

RedToothBrush · 16/03/2019 23:04

The HoC has spend the past 3 years in a state of Neglectful Drunkeness.

As it stands less then two weeks from Brexit Day, there is no deal we were promised. The Conservative and Labour Parties are more divided than ever.

The government is in disarray as 8 Cabinet ministers plus the chief whip voted against the Prime Minister including the Brexit Secretary who had minutes earlier argued for an extension only to vote against it. He is now on the brink of resignation.

The DUP look like they may be about to capitulate and vote for a deal. But it may not be enough even then.

This is what the cliff edge looks like.

Who wants to take a closer look?

Do we have any idea what the extension is for?

If my dc have to hand in homework late they need a sensible reason. I stayed up late playing ps4 isn't good enough.

This is my fave MN comment ever. Extension because of unavoidable/unforeseeable reasons with a plan of how to complete the work - absolutely fine. Extension because of staying up late playing PS4 and plans to continuing playing PS4 for the foreseeable future - not so fine.

I also love Bercow a bit more today. Seems like he's a man with integrity. He's charged with ensuring HoC runs properly, according to its own conventions, and is respected. His role is necessary to ensure the balance of power between the executive and the legislature and I'm genuinely impressed that he's been prepared to do that is such a public manner and despite the (likely) drubbing by the press.

Finally, I was just thinking the other day that if Corbyn stepped down and Starmer stepped up the next GE could be unbelievably interesting. Fingers crossed!

There is to be no more indicative votes this was confirmed by Tory at the despatch box ( forgot his name) who was explaining that the WA still might get through when presented on 25th????, TM will not revoke and no deal remains the default ( unless you blahblahblah) and can only get extension if WA voted for blahblahblah. This was after Berkow left this afternoon.

HateIsNotGood · 18/03/2019 19:56

For everyone freaking - all that needs to be done is enough changes to the WA that Bercow considers to be 'fundamental'; bearing in mind that Bercow can be challenged.

Maybe a challenge to Bercow's decision is enough 'evidence' for the EU to agree a 'short extension' to A50?

If anyone really knows I'm sure everyone elsewould like to know too.

RedToothBrush · 18/03/2019 19:59

The permanent written rules under which the House regulates its proceedings are known as the Standing Orders. The continuing or “standing” nature of rules means that they do not lapse at the end of a session or parliament. Rather, they remain in effect until the House itself decides to suspend, change or repeal them.

Thus any rule can be removed by a vote. In theory. In practise you have to have a majority. And May seems to have issues with getting these in the context of her WA.

Would the HoC really vote to be allowed to vote again on the same amendment that they rejected only last week by 149 votes ? Confused

It's like voting to be be presented with the stale porridge you refused last breakfast
... and which you may then choose to refuse again

If they do vote to change the Standing Order, would they actually vote for the WA this time ? Hmm
that's 75 votes that have to totally switch within a week

borntobequiet · 18/03/2019 20:00

Re Dominic Cummings: I think anyone working in Education when Gove was Education Sec would probably agree he is a toad. Actually unfair on toads, Cummings far more slimy and poisonous.

Sostenueto · 18/03/2019 20:01

So are we getting into having a vote to have a vote on something they are not allowed to vote on, because they've already voted to create law which frustrates the ability to uphold another law they've voted to create?

Anyone?

A million times over and that's HoC!

HateIsNotGood · 18/03/2019 20:03

Yes - Standing Orders are the fundamental point upon which all levels of UK governance are balanced - Bercow doesn't bellow "Order, Order" simply because it sounds good.

Standing Orders can be changed, but until then, the Orders do Stand. It's "how it works".

Sostenueto · 18/03/2019 20:04

Apparently they have the numbers for both bigchoc. Not many want no deal so fuck knows what's going to happen.

CordeliaEarhart · 18/03/2019 20:04

Red, so they'd need to vote to be allowed to vote on something they already voted against twice in huge numbers.

If TM has the votes to pass the WA then surely they can just do that. Which rather suggests Bercow has simply forced the government's hand a day early on this. Either they have the votes to pass WA (after postponing/ending the standing order) or they don't.

OublietteBravo · 18/03/2019 20:06

Can I just pop in to say WTF? Brexit is supposed to be happening a week on Friday and we’re no closer to knowing what will happen than we were when TM postponed MV1 before Christmas. Aaaargh. AAAARGH.

RedToothBrush · 18/03/2019 20:07

Hence me saying

So are we getting into having a vote {to change the standing order} to have a vote on something they are not allowed to vote on {to allow MV3} , because they've already voted to create law which frustrates {by refusing to vote for May's deal whilst also voting against no deal and to trigger A50} the ability to uphold another law they've voted to create {because the Withdrawal Act requires a vote by Parliament to approve May's deal}?

The long and short of it being, they've screwed this up so badly and have voted themselves into knots, so they'll have to have another time-wasting vote to get them out of the mess they've made because they can't manage to vote FOR something, just AGAINST everything.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/03/2019 20:07

Voting on the 25th is too late !
The EU said they would consider extensions during their Council meeting THIS week, Thursday-Friday

The HoC & the govt have to get out of their Wesminster bubble and start listening to what the EU says

The extensions may well be refused simply because the E27 heads of govt won't have time to get together and discuss the options properly.
They don't trust the UK sufficiently to just agree by EMail return.

They want to avoid having 27 separate decisions and waiting for these, then discussions to form a consensus ...
much quicker when everyone is in the same room
They want to be briefed by Barnier and Selmayr, who has been war-gaming on all the possibilities.
Video conferencing is just not the same

Sostenueto · 18/03/2019 20:07

The slimiest toad of all, TM, will try like hell to get that fucking, wanking piece of shit through! Oh God! I haven't swore like that since I was in my teens!Blush

HateIsNotGood · 18/03/2019 20:07

And with regards to Cummins and toads - just because he knows really well how toads think, how toads work, how toady even the most 'untoady' really are and can be; it doesn't make Cummins himself a toad.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/03/2019 20:08

So far we have not seen the WILL of the HoC, just the WON'T

Still waiting ....

RedToothBrush · 18/03/2019 20:09

Red, so they'd need to vote to be allowed to vote on something they already voted against twice in huge numbers.

If TM has the votes to pass the WA then surely they can just do that. Which rather suggests Bercow has simply forced the government's hand a day early on this. Either they have the votes to pass WA (after postponing/ending the standing order) or they don't.

It's either that or renegotiate the WA, come up with a completely different idea (Kyle amendment?), revoke or simply no deal.

I think

bellinisurge · 18/03/2019 20:10

My No Deal loving FB "friend " has just circulated some Leave means Leave shit promoting a demonstration on 29 March in Parliament Square. It was a ghastly thing.

RedToothBrush · 18/03/2019 20:11

And with regards to Cummins and toads - just because he knows really well how toads think, how toads work, how toady even the most 'untoady' really are and can be; it doesn't make Cummins himself a toad.

If the toad keeper doesn't take responsibility for how he handles his toads and how they behave, he's an irresponsible toad.

OP posts:
BigChocFrenzy · 18/03/2019 20:11

Reverse psychology ?

Tell them they can't vote on the WA, to make them invested in making sure they can vote .....
then they'd look silly if they didn't, after all that

NoWordForFluffy · 18/03/2019 20:15

So, the message in the HoC from the stories is essentially: 'Waaaah, waaaaah. We can't have MVIII, so we're going to throw our toys out of the pram, not have any indicative votes at all and your punishment (for correctly administering EM) is a no deal crash out (regardless that the HoC voted against this).'

This is the most contemptible action on behalf of TM and her government. She should be trying to sort indicative votes out to find out exactly what the HoC DOES want.

FFS, I am heartily sick of her dictatorial decisions about Brexit. She needs to get over herself and sort out the best for the country. That Spiegel article was so true.

CordeliaEarhart · 18/03/2019 20:19

We really are in the Endgame now then. Given the ineptitude of the current HoC I'd bet on an accidental No Deal with an attempt to blame it on the EU. Followed by a break up of the UK - Sturgeon sounded rightly pissed off and would (imo) likely win Indyref2 and NI polls a while ago suggested they'd prefer reunification to No Deal. Which would just leave us remainers in England and Wales totally fucked.

Grinchly · 18/03/2019 20:19

bigchoc

No beloved dog owner is ever in the wrong. Cleo will just have pretended she didn't hear and extended the Paw of Comfort. ( am I right, @Sostenueto Wink)

Cats are a different matter. They are judgmental and can get.... huffy...

Sostenueto · 18/03/2019 20:20

My head hurts! Wonder what's going to happen tomorrow? ( ducks behind settee with dog)
