Westminstenders: Neglectful Drunkeness!

The HoC has spend the past 3 years in a state of Neglectful Drunkeness.

As it stands less then two weeks from Brexit Day, there is no deal we were promised. The Conservative and Labour Parties are more divided than ever.

The government is in disarray as 8 Cabinet ministers plus the chief whip voted against the Prime Minister including the Brexit Secretary who had minutes earlier argued for an extension only to vote against it. He is now on the brink of resignation.

The DUP look like they may be about to capitulate and vote for a deal. But it may not be enough even then.

This is what the cliff edge looks like.

Who wants to take a closer look?

Matt Chorley @ mattchorley
Cabinet source points out that if there are the numbers to back May’s deal, they also have the numbers to vote to disapply the standing order which prevents the same question being put again...

Fair point Rosetti, but as an obvious Remain voter wouldn't you rather WA than No Deal or a request to extend for so long that the 'uncertainty', continues for years

I don't want no-deal. I want to remain. But I can't see anyway back into the EU without no-deal first. Unless there's a political equivalent of sublimation.

I also think some hardcore remainers agree with me, and have been subtly tweaking the headbanger Brexiteers into pushing for a no-deal ... hence our current position.

That said, shit though the WA is, if it passes, the thought of how much shit the ERG will be eating for the next few years is a crumb of consolation.

It's been far too long since we had a Mexican wave of "if only Theresa hadn't called an election in 2017" ... never does any harm to remind ourselves of cockups of the century ....

Will TM give a speech about this?!

Do we think she’s really pissed off or secretly relieved that she doesn’t have to have the MV3??

Which is a different question ... I can't see Grieve going for it, for a start. Or Starmer.

dreichuplands · 18/03/2019 17:44

The WA is continued uncertainty, not for the few years of the WA but in terms of business planning on a longer term it is just that. It is a kind of death by a thousand paper cuts versus something more dramatic.
I change my mind from time to time as to which longer term would be worse.

lonelyplanetmum · 18/03/2019 17:47

I think it shows what unpredictable times we are living in- is that I think this is the first time in three years there's been an event that Red hasn't predicted in the OP.

I think she would have preferred any obstacles to have come from the EU. That would not only be expected politically, but feed into the UKs partisan media nicely.

Now we have the slightly more tense situation where it's parliaments own rules that have proved a stumbling block (along with TMs own behaviour). A little harder for the UK press to pick apart without triggering Britains second civil war. Not such a hyperbolic statement if you recall what triggered the first one.

. {It is a kind of death by a thousand paper cuts versus something more dramatic.}
A 'crash out' will take best part of a year to unravel (although serious bumps on the way) whereas a focused (no, stop laughing) WA could happen in 2 and a bit years. OK probably a big bit.

dreichuplands · 18/03/2019 17:55

Ah see first you have a lot more confidence than me in them managing to sort anything out with Brussels. The last two years haven't filled me with confidence, neither has the obsession with the backstop. I can see it taking a very long time.

I think it shows once again how incompetent the government is. We all knew this rule existed. We've talked about it on these threads for ages, but I had assumed that May also knew and had therefore made the effort to find a way around out before so confidently declaring another vote. It seems that we have all overestimated her abilities to be honest.

Tanith · 18/03/2019 17:58

Posted already elsewhere Bollocks.

Sorry, I find it hard to keep up on these threads and frequently have to skip bits.

So good, I read it twice, though Smile

Sostenueto · 18/03/2019 18:00

Veiled threat from attorney general ' HoC may have to close down'. From government ' we are not in a place for a veto' also from government ' we are not in a place to comment about speaker' and ' ongoing talks with DUP' .......

lonelyplanetmum · 18/03/2019 18:00

How are the ugloids going to treat this? Is Bercow going be the enemy of the people or has that worn thin by now?

wherearemychickens · 18/03/2019 18:00

So given that MPs voted against no deal last week and voted for an extension, this theoretically means she has to go back and ask for a long extension surely?

lonelyplanetmum · 18/03/2019 18:03

I meant ugly tabloids - not the readership!

dreichuplands · 18/03/2019 18:05

I doubt it will be pretty.

67chevvyimpala · 18/03/2019 18:06

Sooo......

Wtf?

dreichuplands · 18/03/2019 18:06

May is writing to Tusk for an extension.

icannotremember · 18/03/2019 18:07

DH went teetotal in January; now more than ever I am very glad indeed I didn't join him.

Bets on May's next move being holding a vote to allow MV3?

wheresmymojo · 18/03/2019 18:09

Ooops....got distracted by reporting hate speech on the EDL page (it's what I do when very bored) and missed an urgent question on Art 50 extension. Blush

lonelyplanetmum · 18/03/2019 18:09

May is writing to Tusk for an extension.

Just to be rejected in writing? No extension allowed unless good reason- election or PV.

dreichuplands · 18/03/2019 18:09

May to write to Tusk requesting article 50 extension, Brexit minister tells MPs

wheresmymojo · 18/03/2019 18:10

Kwasi Kwarteng agrees with the Speaker's statement.

FiddleFaddleDingDong · 18/03/2019 18:11

John 'headbanger' Redwood on his feet talking shite.

dreichuplands · 18/03/2019 18:12

As Justine Greening points out the two ministers in charge of Brexit extension discussions both voted against the move last week.

What are they going to do with this extension, the EU will want to know this.
