So May has lost the vote. Now what?!

Lost it by a big margin - 391 to 242.

Please, God, that means we're nearer to staying in the EU.

One thing I don’t understand though is why the JRM’s voted down the WA?
A no deal brexit will be voted down too so what are they holding out for?
We could end up not leaving at all now so really confused as to what they’re doing Confused

jasjas1973 · 13/03/2019 09:51

SJ - they appear to be sticking to their view that the WA is a terrible loss of sovereignty, i agree with them on this.

The WA could mean that for years to come the UK is taking rules from the EU with no say or representation and FOM would carry on as before, with no emergency brake as we could have in EFTA and paying in considerably more, still part of CFP and CAP....... no one in 2016 voted for that!!!

TBH if this is the only option, brexiteirs would be better off having a revoke and starting again.

surferjet · 13/03/2019 09:54

Thanks jasjas1973 for explaining.

Xenia · 13/03/2019 09:57

Yes, before the referendum I was writing that leaving would mean if we wanted to epxort goods and services to the EU we would have to follow EU rules as now but without having a say in them - one reason I voted Remain. With WA was not too bad for remainers actually but it appears to be dead in the water.

ERG may well now not get a brexit at all.

surferjet · 13/03/2019 09:59

ERG may well now not get a brexit at all

This is it.
All very weird tbh.

jasjas1973 · 13/03/2019 10:01

SJ - not exactly my explanation! it was what Ann Marie Morris MP (ERG) said a few days ago.

As a leaver, what's your take on their stance?

surferjet · 13/03/2019 10:04

Well, not having read the million page WA I’ll just go on what the ERG said, and no brexit is better than a bad brexit. But not sure the majority of leavers will think that.

surferjet · 13/03/2019 10:09

But if we do end up staying it will never be the same. Brexit has often been referred to as a marriage ending in divorce, we may not get divorced but we’ll always be the partner who cheated & wanted to leave ( but couldn’t quite afford it so reluctantly stayed )
The EU will make us pay forever - just like a a scorned wife ( or husband )

QueenOfIce · 13/03/2019 10:14

This whole thing is a shit show and I'm embarrassed to be British. We are so passive it's embarrassing. Britain has no balls at all and no courage of its convictions. Just get the fuck on with it whatever 'it' is.

Lweji · 13/03/2019 10:24

ERG may well now not get a brexit at all

Did they really ever wanted one, or just wanted to be able to complain about the EU?

GhostofFrankGrimes · 13/03/2019 10:26

This is the problem with the most vocal brexiteers. They shout slogans from the sidelines but never offer solutions.

jasjas1973 · 13/03/2019 10:27

SJ - not sure that's a good analogy, as very soon all the main antagonists will be gone, Juncker, May, Tusk, a new EU commission and Parliament.

If the country still wants to leave, then elect a govt that sets out a clear exit plan and triggers A50 again, no 2nd vote required or a WA that is worse for sovereignty than remaining.

Andrew Bridgen is now explaining the ERGs position which is as Ann Morris stated.

surferjet · 13/03/2019 10:38

Of course, but they’ll never forget we voted to leave. The ones waiting in the wings to take over could be extremely vengeful - we just don’t know.

MissedTheBoatAgain · 13/03/2019 10:42

Ignorance is no excuse

Everyone over voting age has the right to vote including those that others may think are ignorant

Songsofexperience · 13/03/2019 10:46

Well, they could be just as vengeful if we crash out...

{ERG may well now not get a brexit at all}
The ERG make money on DISRUPTION, not necessarily Brexit itself. JRM has apparently boosted his 'profits' by £7 Million over the last 3 years.
By having money in the 'right' place at the right time (a slightly fancier version of betting on the horses nut being part of the team that influence the odds) it is the rise and fall of currency that they are benefiting from. The Pound lost 1% with the announcement yesterday.
Of course this incremental gain is profitable enough but the 'big one' will be the UK actually leaving and gaining on the wild fluctuations and then being first in the queue at the 'fire sale' afterwards.
Making money, when you already have a few million, is entertainment not an 'essential' as it is for usual people.

Best analogy I have heard so far

The comment was about politicians in charge and who campaigned for Brexit.

Still, even for voters to belatedly claim ignorance about the consequences of Brexit, that ignorance is no excuse. It's not calling people ignorant, although you do seem to have some comprehension issues, not least of all about the UK and history.

MissedTheBoatAgain · 13/03/2019 10:59

The politicians who pushed for Brexit obviously have something to gain from Brexit. Since when have politicians put people first before their own personal agendas?

Some who voted leave want a referendum because they feel they were cheated. A young woman on QT acknowledged she voted leave, but now thinks she was lied to.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 13/03/2019 11:00

Why are people still peddling the nonsense that the EU is out to punish the UK? The UK has done this to itself.

Lweji · 13/03/2019 11:03

A young woman on QT acknowledged she voted leave, but now thinks she was lied to.

But if she had taken the trouble of doing a bit of research on her own, she could have seen through those lies.
There were two sides, putting forward different arguments, but people chose to just listen to one. Fault doesn't lie only with the liars.

Lweji · 13/03/2019 11:04

It's as if the EU would rewards the UK for causing them a huge hassle and over 2 years of uncertainty.

doIreallyneedto · 13/03/2019 11:07

@NotOnTheBench - The EU is the one stalling and trying to keep us in [understandably] by making us sign up to a deal that means we remain part of the EU trade union but with no say at all over what tariffs can be set, what laws apply to us, etc etc.

The EU have been very clear from day 1.
1). Good Friday Agreement must be upheld because, well, you know, the UK actually signed up to it and it is an international peace agreement.
2). The 4 pillars come as a package so the UK cannot expect to pick and choose between them and thus end up with a better deal than EU member states.

The UK appear to be under some delusion that they are so special and so important that the EU will agree to whatever they ask. The UK are the ones who are incapable of making a decision that is workable. The red lines announced by Theresa May and compliance with the GFA are totally incompatible. The only thing the UK government appears able to say is NO. They have learnt well from the DUP.

jasjas1973 · 13/03/2019 11:10

Of course, but they’ll never forget we voted to leave. The ones waiting in the wings to take over could be extremely vengeful - we just don’t know

No we don't but the EU has bigger issues to address plus of course, being vengeful is just going to lead to another triggering of A50... something they wouldn't want.

I still think we will leave, as May will go for a 3rd and with an extension, 4th and 5th attempts - so don't worry just yet though!

surferjet · 13/03/2019 11:15

GhostofFrankGrimes

If your partner wanted to leave because he wasn’t overly happy with the relationship, but changed his mind because....well, it would be a bit too much hassle to find a new place to live bla bla bla, you’d welcome him back with open arms and do all you could to make sure he never left again, even though he was the one who fucked up?
Maybe you would.
Or maybe you’d make his life a misery because you now had the upper hand?
Human nature is a funny thing.
& don’t forget - if they do take the revenge route, remainers will pay too.
