Vote 12th March: Meaningful Vote on the Withdrawal Agreement

Vote 13th March: If WA fails, vote on No Deal

Vote 14th March: If WA fails, vote on A50 extension

Not much more to add at this stage that's not repeating what's been said before.

Gosh! I see it now borntobequiet and utterly, totally agree!. bigchocfrenzyFlowers

Sostenueto · 12/03/2019 05:54

The Government has laid before Parliament, under Section 13(1)(a) of the EU (Withdrawal Act) 2018: (i) a statement that political agreement has been reached; (ii) a copy of the negotiated withdrawal agreement; (iii) a copy of the framework for the future relationship; (iv) a joint statement supplementing the Political Declaration setting out the framework for the future relationship; (v) a unilateral declaration; and (vi) an instrument relating to the withdrawal agreement.

As set out in the Prime Minister’s statement of 26 November 2018, the withdrawal agreement laid before Parliament following political agreement being reached in November 2018 represented “__a version of the text which has been agreed, but has not yet been formally signed. Before this formal signature takes place, the agreement must complete the European Union’s jurist-linguist translation process. During that time, minor technical corrections will be made to the text, though these changes will not affect the substance of the agreement”.

In line with that, the text has since been subject to minor technical corrections, for example to correct stylistic or grammatical errors. In addition, it has been put onto the EU’s standard template for international treaties as part of its publication in the EU’s Official Journal which has led to further formatting changes.

Junckers words mean IMO
No more negotiations
Brexit MIGHT NOT take place
Take it or leave it
We have conceded nothing
We can't concede to your unreasonable demands
A backstop means a backstop
Grow up!

The Mail and Express are pretty positive too (both last nights edition)

I feel sick at the moment. Surely MPs can see this farce for what it is?
Hope dwindles every passing minute...

RedToothBrush · 12/03/2019 06:13

And the Telegraph first and second editions

Seem pretty favourable to May

Also Times business as it has two interesting stories. The first is UK shareholders will lose rights in Ryan Air in event of no deal.

Plus news of the man tipped to replace Carney. He's India and sounds very pro leave

The only hope left to escape the madness of WA getting through and subsequent decades of wrangling is that I shall probably peg it before its done.
Please let there be a revoke!

News Corp calls for break up of Google
Australia’s competition watchdog is examining the dominance of technology platforms

Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp has called on Australia’s competition watchdog to break-up Google, arguing the US company’s dominance of online search and advertising technologies is damaging consumers, advertisers and news publishers.

The media group’s Australian division said in a submission to the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s digital platforms inquiry on Tuesday that it should recommend to Canberra that Alphabet, Google’s parent company, be forced to divest its search function from the rest of its business units.

“Google leverages its market power in both general search services and ad tech services to the detriment of consumers, advertisers and news publishers. To remedy these harms, Google could either sell Google Search, or retain Google Search and divest the rest of its businesses to a third party,” said News Corp.

Interesting story. Mirrored in the US and EU.

Tom Newton Dunn @tnewtondunn
Nick Timothy’s gloomy verdict - hold your nose and back it. “As grotesquely flawed as it is, MPs who want to see Brexit through should vote for the deal. In a choice between certain death and probable death, it is better to stay alive.”

Theresa May’s deal is grotesquely flawed but is our only hope for any kind of Brexit
Right now, the optimistic vision for life after Brexit is slipping away, that's why MPs need to vote for Theresa May's deal — it's the only path to independence

It's got to be said that the tone of the right leaning press today is pro-deal.

The left leaning press is a lot more critical and open about saying May achieved nothing of substance yesterday.

Given how many people won't get beyond the press spin, you'd say this is good in terms of what leave readers will be seeing - the right wing press want a deal.

Tom Newton Dunn @tnewtondunn
What has May got?
1. An arbitration mechanism to escape the backstop - but no time limit.
2. Legally binding changes - but not ones she initially asked for.
3. An aspiration for Alternative Arrangements by December 2020 - but no hard start date.
Enough for all ERG? Unlikely.

She hasn't even got this. But since when did facts matter. What's reported is what counts.

Bottom line: if the Brexiteers want a ladder to climb down, they have one. It’s missing a couple of rungs but the unilateral declaration reaches the ground. If they don’t want one, there’s plenty to criticise

New to posting on here, though I have been following often. Thank you, everyone, and especially RedToothBrush. Flowers

BigChocFrenzy, I live in rural former east Germany - not a really hardcore AfD area, and moderately stable due to tourism, but with many of the issues that affect the region in general. I don't, admittedly (and not surprisingly) move in AfD circles, but as far as I can tell, the general tone here is much like I presume it is in most parts of the west - of complete bemusement that the UK would do this and understanding that it's not about British individuals, certainly not ones that live here. Citizenship applications have gone up tenfold lately (I got mine four months ago) and many local 'foreigners' authorities' are informally prioritising Brits atm.

The Germans have this great word 'Fremdschämen' which means being embarrassed for someone else. It's a strange thing to have spent the last two and a half years feeling like that about your own country.

bellinisurge · 12/03/2019 06:44

That is a great word @AndItStillSaidFourOfTwo .

Whisky2014 · 12/03/2019 06:47

So its likely this vote will go through then?

RedToothBrush · 12/03/2019 06:56

Will the WA pass today?

No.

It's all about the size of the defeat.

Again.

Raghuram Rajan says capitalism is 'under serious threat'

Former Indian central bank governor Raghuram Rajan has warned capitalism is "under serious threat" as it has stopped providing for the masses.

Mr Rajan told BBC Radio 4's Today Programme "when that happens, the many revolt against capitalism".

He said governments cannot afford to ignore social inequality when considering the economy.

Mr Rajan led India's central bank and was also a former chief economist at the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Thats very political.

if the Brexiteers want a ladder to climb down, they have one

But they don't want one.Their agenda is only to oppose and resist. Most of the ERG Brexiteers at any rate are power crazed with a sense of insatiable entitlement.

RedToothBrush · 12/03/2019 07:06

Strangely effort after seeing AndItStillSaidFourOfTwo's great German word I've just seen this tweet

Robert Macfarlane @ RobgMacfarlane
Word of the (Brexit) day: “Zugzwang” - literally “compulsion to move” (German); a chess term for a situation where one is forced by the rules of the game to make a move, but all possible moves are disadvantageous. Sometimes yelled by opponents in an outburst of unseemly triumph.

OP posts:
bellinisurge · 12/03/2019 07:09

We ought to make an extra bit for the Brexit dictionary of appropriate German words. I don't speak German but I understand it's great for that kind of thing.
