Vote 12th March: Meaningful Vote on the Withdrawal Agreement

Vote 13th March: If WA fails, vote on No Deal

Vote 14th March: If WA fails, vote on A50 extension

Not much more to add at this stage that's not repeating what's been said before.

{She was pouring the petrol into a glass jug for her daughter’s car as she cooked dinner when vapours were ignited by the gas hob. Her family put the blame squarely at the Government’s door.}

Why is the family blaming 'the government' because she doesn't have 2 braincells to rub together.
If petrol is in a suitable container and handled properly, while a risk it is not too difficult.
I forget what the UK regulations for carrying and storing petrol are.
5 Litres in an approved container in an area with plenty of ventilation (basically outdoors) and ensure there are no naked flames. How simple can that be?

Peregrina · 11/03/2019 08:17

I don't actually think that MPs writing a list of 'demands' (requests might be a better word), is any worse than the present shambles. I would assume that way that we would get a reasonable cross section of views which might truly reflect what the country does want.

At the moment it seems to be shaping up to be more money for public services. If a face saving way of leavers to climb down from being anti the EU can be found, I think the majority would neither know nor care whether we were in or out.

BiglyBadgers · 11/03/2019 08:22

peregrina I could deal with them writing demands and then sorting out between themselves something reasonable the EU might actually want, but just handing over a list of random and unachievable demands to the EU is just adding a new level of mortification onto an already soul destroying situation.

BigChocFrenzy · 11/03/2019 08:31

peregrina The problem is that what MPs want

  • no backstop, frictionless trade without FOM or ECJ -
is not acceptable to the EU

Most MPs have never progressed beyond demanding cake and expecting the EU to blink at the last moment,
because .... cars etc ....

A long while ago, Barnier presented the menu of possible Brexits
and unless the UK drops its red lines, this WA is all that is possible
Only the final destination in the PD is negotiable now

1tisILeClerc · 11/03/2019 08:32

{I could deal with them writing demands and then sorting out between themselves something reasonable}

The thing with this is that it is how the HoC work 'normally'. It is not as if any of the issues are new. The cabinet have chosen to ignore the HoC and make an attempt to actually rectify the real problems and both 'sides' have done so forever. The cabinet was even split over the decision to fight Hitler at the beginning of WW2.
In other news, an MP is calling for cats to be microchipped so that any that are involved in accidents can have their owners traced.
With less than 3 weeks until the UK leaves the EU you have to wonder which planet some people are on.

BigChocFrenzy · 11/03/2019 08:34

MPs still want what the EU will never deliver.

Rather like the Leave electorate as a whole, MPs want a unicorn

They don't want to do their job and make a choice of what is actually available

I may have to see a shrink to cure me of my addiction of sticking up two fingers every time I see TM on the telly.......tick,tock,tick,tock.

Hotel Bravo, anyone? Pm me if you prefer....

Loletta · 11/03/2019 09:09

Just listened to Radio 4, The Sun's political editor saying TM is likely to kick the can until next week when the Council meet and the vote this week is going to be about the WA and a way out of the backstop. A complete breach of trust to the cabinet who didn't resign on her promise of the votes this week. A complete breach of trust with the EU who have held firm and loyal to their promises and agreed (reluctantly) the the backstop as a comprise

wheresmymojo · 11/03/2019 09:19

"an MP is calling for cats to be microchipped so that any that are involved in accidents can have their owners traced."

We can't stop the world from turning just because 'Brexit'. Yes, it's a shit show. Yes, no deal would be a catastrophe.

Even among all of that there are still things that are important to people.

My cats are part of my family. I love them as much (and in some cases more than) members of my own flesh and blood.

wheresmymojo · 11/03/2019 09:21

Also I was a tiny bit disappointed that many on the thread were horrified that someone had referred to TM's diabetes in a negative way and then proceeded to say she might have a 'psycho' moment or something similar.

How is that less offensive that a diabetic moment?

I have bipolar and have 'psycho' (i.e. psychotic) moments - I generally manage not to run entire countries into the jaws of ruin though.

Laura Kuenssberg @bbclaurak
Easy to talk about govt moving away from promises on no deal and delay votes - if that happened ? Maybe resignations and maybe too, one Cabinet minister says ‘we’d have to remove her’

And the eurosceptic side - msg sent to ERG by organiser @SteveBakerHW 'stand absolutely firm on the point that we must have meaningful treaty-level change' - 'I don't know about you, but I will not be forced into doing the wrong thing because of the bad things others might do'

PM stuck btw eurosceptic group who have numbers and determination to kill this deal as it stands, and Remainers who've been emboldened by promise of no deal vote, who feel they have leverage now too - will be quite some 8.30 Number 10 meeting this morning

Tom Newton Dunn @tnewtondunn
Brexit latest: PM meeting with senior aides in No10 now to plot a way through this week’s carnage. I’m told it’s most likely she will decide to change tomorrow’s vote from a meaningful one to a provisional one - ie her deal, plus Cox’s changes (1)

If she can produce a Commons majority for any detailed deal on the backstop (not just the Brady fudge), then the EU just might buckle and concede to it at the last minute at next week’s EU Council on March 21/22 (2)

All this, I’m told, was discussed by the PM with Jean-Claude Juncker last night. No10 consider it a win that Juncker even agreed to keep technical negotiations going between officials by the end of the call, so bad is the impasse now (3)

Will Letwin/Cooper/Boles accept another 10 day can kick? No. Expect them to amend tomorrow’s vote to enforce an A50 extension vote on Weds or Thurs, whether PM wins or loses. But whatever the rebels demand, nothing can be signed off by the EU Council until it meets next week (4)

So, Britain could effectively have a twin track Government for the next 10 days - May’s, and Cooper/Letwin’s in the wings - with the EU Council to pick between them, over a late night dinner in Brussels on Thursday week, just 7 days before Brexit. What a cliffhanger (5)

This is really not a good situation. Situations like this rarely end well.

Jennifer Rankin @ jennifermerode
Desperate gamble if PM goes ahead with this ‘choose your own backstop’ vote. Zero understanding of how EU works or what happened in negotiations. It’s a vote for no-deal.

Peter Foster @pmdfoster
Noooo. Come on Jennifer. She just needs to get the “chiefs” in the room next week. Then Angela will come to rescue. The EU will cave like they always do ;)

Make no mistake. It will be a vote for no deal.

Sam Lowe @ sammarclowe
All the motions this week are amendable, right?

Because that could be “fun”.

“This house commits to asking the EU for a four day A50 extension on the condition they pay us £50 and replace Barnier with Enda Kenny and turn Northern Ireland into a free port.”

(I realise for full effect, and to make it more realistic, I should have spelled it ‘Edna’.”)

Oh Lord this week is going to make us all go cross eyed trying to work out what the heck is going on, what amendments there are and what effect they will have and John Bercow is going to be public enemy no 1 at some point.

And resignations. We are all going to get built up to think there will be lots of resignations. From everyone. And they may or may not.

And the usual debacle of what the Labour line is (or isn't).

And then we have all the speculation of what the EU will or will not do.

cries

Deliver Brexit on March 29 or resign, leading Tories tell Theresa May

Senior Conservative MPs have told Theresa May that her position will be untenable if parliament forces her to extend the Article 50 process this week.

In a series of meetings with government whips, Brexiteer Tories have warned Downing Street that the prime minister will face renewed pressure to quit if she is made to ask for extra time from Brussels. Others have suggested that they would be prepared to compromise and back her deal if she wins limited concessions but only if she states her intention to go as soon as the deal is signed

Of course. This is an impossible task.

A poor translation of an EU script: Mr Barnier might dress it up to look better (and be correct).
Non, vous ne pouvez pas, s'il vous plaît, partez.

'I don't know about you, but I will not be forced into doing the wrong thing because of the bad things others might do'
Doesn't this shoot the reason for leaving out of the water? Hmm

Leaver friend still convinced EU will blink. Doesn't know why anyone is worried about No Deal because WTO tariffs are now agreed (!), WA is too weak. Convinced schools won't be affected because they'll just make them eat all of the UK veg and we will all just have to eat cheddar. Still thinks backstop is us pandering to terrorists and ranted about how "we've let them continue to bring up their kids with these ridiculous hatreds and it's time for us to stop being so soft or they can go their own way". Reckons all of NI wants to No Deal ASAP. Also spoke a lot about how people simply shouldn't have children - total authoritarian. Really struggling to speak to her atm Sad

Well my nerves are just in tatters right now. My Lyme, usually controlled by my implant , reacts badly to additional stress and I get more pain, as it’s not so effective. What did I have this weekend ? Yep lots more pain. That the vote may —will— be pulled and be advisory only, is shit. We have 18 days to go, what is that going to achieve?
