This thread is for those prepping for brexit and building up their family stores for the possibility of no deal and food shortages and/or delays.
Suggestions welcome on what to stash.

think its just to cover their backs tbh

wildchild554 · 27/02/2019 12:02

I have a friend who will bin hers if they have sprouts or out of date, same with other food, can't convince her they're still fine so I end up with extra food saves wasting them

BlackeyedGruesome · 27/02/2019 14:40

Was helping with gardening and they found a massive potato in the compost heap and they offered it to take home to eat. Others then got a bit worried about eating a potato from the compass heap, will it be alright etc. Where do they think they bloody grow in the first place?

BlackeyedGruesome · 27/02/2019 14:42

Some people have forgotten how to store food and tell if it is ok without the date on the pack.

Lwmommy · 27/02/2019 17:09

If anyone still needs loo roll, Tesco have 24 roll packs of Andrex for £7.50 which is cheaper than own brand. Its a 100yr celebration pack IIRC.

TwinkleTits70 · 27/02/2019 17:46

I think I'm pretty much done now apart from wine which is coming in Fridays food shop. Just need to keep on top of the stock rotation now.

Oh and make sure we have fuel in both cars as we are keyworkers.

BlackeyedGruesome · 27/02/2019 20:46

I have resumed the forward purchasing, toasted sesame oil on offer in Morrisons. Saved, £2 .10 or more. They were one of the last items on the list and make things taste nice.

I have bought several items when they have been on offer. This is what I normally do. A couple of extra jars of coffee found their way into the trolley too as it is one of my must haves.

I have added a couple of boxes of cornflakes as ds has decided he likes these now. Bloody typical. At least he decided before Brexit.

Topped up the tin count. More carrots, sweetcorn and chopped tomatoes. They will be disappearing into the stash.

Also bought some big pots to grow some veggies. Still need to buy compost and seeds.

Moorfields · 01/03/2019 05:50

I had a Morrison's delivery last night mainly of tins, packets, bottled water & long dated items. I now need to organise it into weekly meal piles and put it away. I don't have room in my kitchen as it's full of my regular shopping. I'm utilising the space under the bed & stairs, an old wardrobe, suitcases & unused toy boxes.

I could have got it cheaper in Aldi or Lidl but I don't live nearby & they don't offer delivery. Morrison's still works out cheaper than tesco and Sainsbury's.

Morrison's bargains:
PG Tips 240 = £3.50
Yorkshire biscuit tea = £2.00 (tastes just like biscuits, it's lovely)
Napolina Italian chopped tomatoes x 4 = £2
5kg Tilda everyday rice = £5

sorenipples · 01/03/2019 09:38

Slightly off topic, are the branded tinned tomatoes any better than the cheap ones?

PestyMachtubernahme · 01/03/2019 09:42

Best tinned tomatoes 35p from Aldi

I'm sure this has been said somewhere before but for those of you relying on lots of chickpeas and other pulses don't neglect your herbs and spices stash. Chickpeas alone could be very boring (which reminds me I need creamed coconut - chickpea korma is popular here)

We have 50 liters of tap water stored in the cellar - been there a while but in airtight bottles so hopefully be ok in dire striats

Moorfields · 01/03/2019 13:12

Better off buying water purification tablets rather than storing water in plastic bottles. You can buy 100 tablets from Amazon for about £3.

listsandbudgets · 01/03/2019 13:41

Not a bad idea Moorfields though living in a city could be diffiuclt to find apropriate water sources. we do have purification tablets as well but I want to be sure of water

My mum has a spring fed well - deeply jealous

PrawnOfCreation · 01/03/2019 14:06

Huge thank you to whoever mentioned those pizza bases in boxes and the dried cheese. Bought them for the cupboard and the kids were all over them. They're gone, need to buy more, but a huge hit.

BlackeyedGruesome · 01/03/2019 14:17

Shattered, just been packing away a trolley full of shopping and assessing how much more I can store in different places and what I need to buy still.

Today I have topped up children's ibuprofen and bought another tub of sudocreme just in case the one we have is contaminated.

We are nearly there with the buying. Still need canellini beans, pizza bases, birthday cards, AAA batteries, domestos, and antihistamines.

Then I will even out the stash so that we have more of the things we use most often.

Oh and fridge and freezer still need finishing.

SparklySneakers · 01/03/2019 15:47

Pizza bases are a great idea. I'll get some next time I go shopping. I've been to Tesco today and discovered they still do tinned beans and veggie sausages which I loved at uni. Got a couple of tins of those along with some more pot noodles, baked beans, tomato purée-one with chilli, one with garlic, moo skimmed milk, primula cheese, freezer bags, sweets, treats, ready made pasta sauce for lazy days, vimto, and shower gels. I've ordered water purification tablets today with my amazon order of various bits and bobs. They were out of the children vitamins I got from Tesco so will look for those next time. All the gummy ones aren't veggie which is annoying.

I was speaking to mum today and she said if it wasn't for me (informed by mumsnet) then she wouldn't have thought to get in extra food and would be unaware of most of what is going on. She doesn't know anyone else who is getting in any extras as they all think it will be fffiiiinnnee. We are both feeling much calmer about things due to having extra in and knowing we have a buffer. She doesn't know I've got extra here for her too.

I'm anticipating the shops getting busier over this month and things being out of stock as people start panicking.

There was no UHT milk in my lidl this morning. Hard to tell whether these empty shelves are normal and we are just noticing them more than usual or whether things are already being affected. Either way I'm changing from gradual buying now to getting what I need when I see it. We are too close to the potential leave date.

I used the tesco just add water pizza base mix this week and it was good. They've been on offer two for £1 and have a long shelf life

yolofish · 01/03/2019 18:33

shot ourselves in the foot here... stocked up on lots of tinned toms/tomato based sauces etc etc and now been told DH mustnt eat tomatoes as they are too acidic... sigh. Now frantically googling recipes to find out what you can do with pasta that doesnt involve toms (pesto no good, he hates it; carbonara great but bacon and he has bowel cancer). Also a lot of curries seem to be tom based apart from korma etc. At least they will keep I suppose! Need to get some more olive oil in - the pizza base/mix ideas is a good one, might get some of them.

BlackeyedGruesome · 01/03/2019 19:47

Pasta in white sauce.

Fry various veggies in oil in saucepan. I do some of: broccoli, courgettes, green bean, asparagus, onions, cauliflower, mangetout etc. Throw in a spoonful of flour and some milk. Can be made with chick pea flour i have stashed the flour somewhere in the cupboard and could only find chickpea flour or ordinary plain flour and ordinary milk or soya milk. Stir til flour thickens. Add sweetcorn and peas if you like. And/ or chopped apricots. Salt and pepper to taste.

Absolutely delicious.

SparklySneakers · 01/03/2019 20:21

Beer. A box of 24 Budweiser lasts me about a year and is brewed in the EU so should get some in.

I think dh has finally got on board with prepping. When putting the shopping away he asked if I wanted the last tin of tomatoes going upstairs. Grin

Considering every time he sees my stash he makes some joke about me setting up my own Tesco Hmm he's now gone very quiet on the subject.

LurpakIsTheOnlyButter · 01/03/2019 20:45

I watched blackout last night while DH was away.

I immediately bought a wind up, solar powered radio which was delivered today by Amazon magic.

DD8 is winding it up for testing. She has been given the title 'minister of communications'

BlackeyedGruesome · 01/03/2019 22:03

I keep mine on the windowsill and use it in the kitchen when the washing machine is on and drowning out the radio on the landing.

FoodologistGirl · 01/03/2019 22:56

Morrison’s tinned bacon ham is quite nice thinly sliced and fried like bacon in a BLT or with eggs for breakfast. Quite tasty

FoodologistGirl · 01/03/2019 23:17

I started getting a stockpile going before Christmas as I don’t trust this government to not cock it up. DH sceptic at first, but got on board to keep me happy, now with the date getting closer and reports on the news he’s glad we did. Sister got her stockpile sorted and even my parents that I suspect voted leave are getting stuff in just in case after I explained why to them. I’ve been heavy hinting and making comments at work so hopefully people will sort themselves out too. It’s getting on now so let’s hope people won’t panic buy and just put a few extra tins away if not already. I think water and electricity should be ok as the government know it will be a riot and civil unrest if these are off. But have a few bottles of water and candles in case. It’s most likely to just effect Dover roll on roll off fresh produce lorries from EU and the other ports like tilbury with cargo from the rest of the world like clothes shouldn’t be effected. It’s the fact that we want fresh produce all year around and need to get it from warmer EU countries that’s the problem
