This thread is for those prepping for brexit and building up their family stores for the possibility of no deal and food shortages and/or delays.
Suggestions welcome on what to stash.

After all they could use local suppliers and eat something else.

PrawnOfCreation · 26/02/2019 11:06

.... obesity epidemic in children.....I was raised on cress....RULE BRITANYA

SparklySneakers · 26/02/2019 12:04

Luckily I'm a remainer with a well stocked brexit cupboard so giving them a packed lunch each day won't be too problematic.

The poor sod as you put it has had months to establish what is going on as best as anyone can in this situation and speak to suppliers about alternatives.

Local food? In the hungry gap?? Yeah ok then

And we added a couple more squares on the Brexit Bingo board, just for fun.

Lots of people are only just waking up to the prospect of no deal. It is possible that the head has been working stupid hours and not really paying attention to the news.

The governors should also be on the case, not just the head. Or the MAT.

The catering company should be on the case so they can fulfill their contract.

It is not all the head's responsibility.

I am hoping that they do have something sorted as Ds will not eat packed lunches, what with being autistic. There is nothing I can do about that. We already have food he will eat in stock but making him eat it in school is not possible. Neither can I influence the catering company to stockpile, nor the school come to that. These are one of the worries I will not take up, as I can not do anything with them. I will concentrate on the things I can prepare for.

wildchild554 · 26/02/2019 13:34

Now have lighting sorted, food and drink, have enough solar to keep phone and tablets charged, plenty of candles and cooking options, small freezer filled, water purifier and water bags ready, garden is nearly ready, garlic planted and some seedlings started.
Now need to sort out chest freezer, finish using up whats in there,
can chicken, need to get more cheese, laundry detergent, stain remover, curry powder, sweet chilli sauce, kids sweets, biscuits, snacks etc. Need to check through herbs and see what I'm running low on.
Also debating on getting an unlimited data tariff for power outages so I can still work on my phone if there are extended power outages.

BlackeyedGruesome · 27/02/2019 07:12

It is the first day I can shop in the supermarket for 12 days.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 27/02/2019 07:25

Thank you Cloudtree.

Good luck with today's shop Gruesome!

Cloudtree · 27/02/2019 07:54

Thought I'd post it on all relevant threads given that the BBC website has now hidden it after all of about four hours of having it prominently displayed.

BlackeyedGruesome · 27/02/2019 08:10

I noticed!

last night it was, oo someone has posted on .... thread.
ah no it is cloud tree again!

it needs to be noticed and thanks.

Cloudtree · 27/02/2019 08:21

Sorry! Grin

GeistohneGrenzen · 27/02/2019 09:15

Cloudtree glad you've spread it around! I suppose 'glad' must be the right word in this context anyway Hmm

BlackeyedGruesome · 27/02/2019 09:50

I did have a grudging admiration for how far and wide you had spread the message. Grin

I am still processing what I think may happen with these promises of TMs to allow various votes on ruling out no deal and adding a delay and how it will effect my purchasing and when I need to buy certain stuff.

long life stuff like tins: still have/ will still buy those we use.
mid life stuff like juice and milk? well we get through lots anyway, so I suppose keep well stocked and rotate regularly.

short life stuff: not sure. run a fully stocked fridge freezer keep a n eye out as to when to buy a large sack of spuds.

Cloudtree · 27/02/2019 10:20

If there's a delay, all indications are currently that it would only be for a couple of months. In which case the only thing I would need to use up would be UHT milk. So lots of rice puddings, pancakes and porridge.

Long life carton juice will last for a good few weeks past its BBE date.

I have mainly moved onto to stockpiling the "nice to haves" anyway (wine in particular) since basics are now more or less covered. I did some flat pack (library method) meat freezer storage last night following the shopping delivery and it makes a massive difference to freezer space so I can now also fit in some more meat.

Cloudtree · 27/02/2019 10:22

I bought a very large sack of potatoes from morrisons yesterday. Massive bag. Shelf life 1 week!!!! Obviously I'll ignore that but its not good.

That'll teach me. No perishables in online deliveries!

NoWordForFluffy · 27/02/2019 10:46

Unwashed potatoes kept in a cool dark place will keep for months. Washed potatoes won't.

Cloudtree · 27/02/2019 10:48

They're unwashed but obviously already been in storage since they were dug up last season. That's the problems with buying a sack of potatoes at this time of year.

NoWordForFluffy · 27/02/2019 11:00

They'll be fine even if they sprout! Just keep them cool.

wildchild554 · 27/02/2019 11:26

your spuds will be fine, keep them in a cool dark space away from onions. Have kept potatoes over 3 months that i bought in shop, they did sprout but not an issue just kept knocking off sprouts. Just keep checking them and using the ones you think my go first and any damaged ones

bellinisurge · 27/02/2019 11:30

If your spuds start to sprout, take the likeliest looking one or two and stick them sprout up in old egg box and place by the window. This is chitting Grinin advance of planting. No they aren't seed potatoes but they should develop some strong green sprouts and that is the start of a potato plant. Loads of info online about growing potatoes. I've done this to good effect.

NoWordForFluffy · 27/02/2019 11:32

If your spuds get loads of chits you can cut them up to plant each chit on its own, multiplying your yield.

Potato bags are a good way to grow if you've no room in the ground itself. You can also use bins / other containers.

Cloudtree · 27/02/2019 11:36

Haha. Last thing I need is more chitting potatoes. I have many trays on the window sills already and I still have potatoes in the ground from last season. These were very firmly for eating between now and my first earlies being ready in June.

They'll last I'm sure even if some go a little soft towards the end but its annoying that they put a sack that large onto an online delivery with such a short date.
