This thread is for those prepping for brexit and building up their family stores for the possibility of no deal and food shortages and/or delays.
Suggestions welcome on what to stash.

bellinisurge Have you tried slicing mushrooms using an egg slicer. Very quick. If you’ve got a hobbit like passion for mushrooms like me then they can encourage you to accidentally slice too many which need eating up.... You can get them from most kitchen shops and ive seen some in supermarkets where they sell kitchen equipment.

bellinisurge · 24/02/2019 18:06

Hmmmm..... egg slicer - I remember those from childhood Smile

Cloudtree · 24/02/2019 18:27

If the mushrooms stick and break up you could always un them into mushroom powder. Just blitz the dehydrated mushrooms in a blender or food mixer then add to food for a good mushroom flavour.

BlackeyedGruesome · 24/02/2019 18:30

Mushroom soup. Mmmm.

My mum had an egg slicer somewhere

wildchild554 · 25/02/2019 13:45

@OhYouBadBadKitten I would recommend investing in a dehydrator, they are very cheap and mean you can take full advantage of reduced fruit and veg too. Everything I've dehydrated has turned out great on mine. Would also keep your oven free. I was lucky I got my first one for £3 in exchange for my honest review and my second one was only £20 ;)

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/02/2019 13:50

That's a good idea Cloudtree.

I'll keep an eye out Wildchild. I'm not sure I'd normally be dehydrating stuff though. Except.... I do get a pear glut, even though we turn a lot into pear wine and give away a lot.
hmmmm.....

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/02/2019 13:50

I also always end up with a rhubarb glut.

Cloudtree · 25/02/2019 13:55

I love a rhubarb glut. No such thing as too much rhubarb

wildchild554 · 25/02/2019 14:56

@OhYouBadBadKitten I warn you know, your saying now but you will get addicted to it, so much you can do with it :P

wildchild554 · 25/02/2019 14:58

I have 2 cupboards full of dehydrated fruit and veg now and dehydrated treats too :)

FriarTuck · 25/02/2019 15:11

With the possible threat of extending Brexit for months or more, is anyone panicking that their Brexit stash is going to be expiring just when all hell could break loose?! Shock

bellinisurge · 25/02/2019 15:22

Nope. I just eat anything which I think is near its expiration date and replace it as I go. The expiration date on tinned goods is pretty meaningless but I will look at the shelf stable dairy I have to be sure.

wildchild554 · 25/02/2019 16:41

@bellinisurge Have you ever used the tube solar cooker before? I've used a solar flask and works well. Am tempted to pick up a solar tube cooker too and wondering if it will work as well?

wildchild554 · 25/02/2019 16:42

No, everything has a long shelf life and most of them are bbe dates anyway

TwinkleTits70 · 25/02/2019 16:45

Just had a slight Ocado panic as it wouldn't let me check out my order for about 10 minutes. Kept saying high volume of traffic. Thought I'd missed some big Brexit headline!

bellinisurge · 25/02/2019 17:06

@wildchild554 , I've never used that type. I have a cheapo camping sun oven which is basically a freezer bag with a clear plastic zipped front that you point at the sun. I actually made a delicious tomato pasta sauce in one last summer. I haven't tried it in anything other than full sun in summer although my little garden gets sun all day from mid morning. It's been unseasonally sunny this week so far, maybe I'll give it a go in February if I get chance.

wildchild554 · 25/02/2019 17:16

@bellinisurge I have that type but it didn't work well last year unless it was my placement of it, but was thinking I might have better success with the other type as it's the same sort of design as the flask and was able to boil the flask water, even in more dull days got 8 cups off it

bellinisurge · 25/02/2019 17:24

Mine worked fine although it was blooming hot outside. I basically popped out every hour or so to turn it to face the sun moving across the sky.

wildchild554 · 25/02/2019 18:23

@bellinisurge it must of been the way i was doing it, was trying to bakes biscuits as they are low heat and easy to bake but they did nothing. Logically, if I can boil water should be able to bake biscuits.
Is this the type you have?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 25/02/2019 18:26

It's going to take some careful stock managing if brexit does get delayed. But personally I'm at the point where I'm stock rotating at this point for perishables.

bellinisurge · 25/02/2019 18:50

Yes @wildchild554

AdoraBell · 25/02/2019 19:24

Ooh, that recipe thread will come in handy, thank you 💐

BlackeyedGruesome · 25/02/2019 20:56

I reckon on checking things once every couple of months depending on what you have stashed. the shortest date stuff is the most accessible. the treats are not going to last until their use by date.

I need to restock the treat stash already. Blush

SparklySneakers · 25/02/2019 23:12

I can't remember which thread it was on now about potential school food shortages but I've had a response from the head at my primary school to say "I'll get back to you" which I think is code for "I haven't a bloody clue because no one has told us anything but if I tell you that you'll think I'm useless so will make you wait while I desperately seek some kind of non-answer about it all being FIIIIINNNNEEE and your children who get free school means will still get their hot lunch each day."

Could be that the our sod has not had chance to think about it and it hasn't occurred to her that there may be a problem with suppliers as they have been busy with all the other crap of being a head teacher.
