This thread is for those prepping for brexit and building up their family stores for the possibility of no deal and food shortages and/or delays.
Suggestions welcome on what to stash.

In terms of other fresh veg I have lots of butternut squash since even if there are no problems, these will last six months and so we will get through them. We like a tray bake of chicken, carrots, butternut squash, cherry tomatoes and chick peas, all tossed in tagine paste, roasted and served with cous cous. Really easy and delicious. I also put butternut squash in curries and lasagnes to sneak it in.

I've even numbered my butternut squashes in pencil so I know which are the oldest Blush.

The corn on the cobs which you can buy vacuum packed in home bargains passed the DC test so I will pick up some more of those. They have months on them. Not strictly necessary since tinned is perfectly good.

Garlic is still fine from the garden last year. Stored in a dark cupboard. So If you pick up a few bulbs from the supermarket it should last. Likewise onions if they're firm when you buy them.

Carrots should be ok if dry. Apparently storing them in sand helps but I haven't tried it. Parsnips should be the same (and swede and turnips if you eat them).

I also have apples wrapped in newspaper and in the garage (dark and cool).

Not that I think we will have massive power issues but as a generally useful thing has everyone seen these? Work out at less than £4.50 if you collect the 70% off promotion. It will look like the promotion hasn't gone through until the final stage where it shows as a credit to use and it removes the 70%.

Ta. Will look at that later when I have recovered from hefting 3 bags of 70 litres compost into a trolley, one into the car (nice van man put 2 in) and 3 bags out of the car to the garage. I am currently laying down whimpering quietly.

Been under the cupboard to check the exact assortment of bean tins. ( Lying on floor and fishing out tins with loft hatch hook) Took a photo on phone to remind me so I can update the list.

I was going to go to Asda but it started to rain and I have been defeated by compost.

I now have about 500 litres of compost in the garage.

I now have added dimmable lightbulbs, domestos on offer in Morrisons, hair bobbles, topped up the sanpro, tinned beans, tinned sweetcorn and chopped tomatoes, conditioner, red lentils and chick peas. We eat a lot of red lentils and dried chickpeas. There were other bits and bobs too.

I shall update my list when I can find the strength to pick up the pen!

BlackeyedGruesome · 07/03/2019 12:34

It is the little bits and bobs that you don't use very often that I am worried about forgetting. I may update my list and post a new version.

I'm wondering if you ladies can help me is there anyway to store bananas. It's the only fruit my DS will eat he won't eat fruit pouches I've been trying to get him to eat them for a couple of weeks but he's a real nightmare for fruit and veg. He is drinking watered down fresh apple juice now which counts as 1 portion of fruit so I've stocked up on long life juice but probably should pick up more. He ate everything until he was very poorly and on a ventilator and ate nothing solid for about a week now all he wants is chicken nuggets and fish fingers! I have to have him on a high fat diet too as he dropped to the 0.4th centile I'm so bloody worried about this whole mess he can't afford to loose more weight I need to make sure we have plenty of food he will eat and stuff I can hide veg in. I've stocked up on well baby vitamins to help him but I want him to eat well. Sorry if I'm rambling the closer it gets the worse my anxiety is getting.

MadauntofA · 07/03/2019 19:30

You can chop bananas up and freeze them, then blend with a tiny bit of milk to make banana "ice cream".

GeistohneGrenzen · 07/03/2019 19:44

Onescaredmuma I was going to say about cutting peeled bananas into chunks and freezing them but got beaten to it! I usually wait til the skins have brown specks on before I give them this treatment, as that shows they're nice and ripe Flowers

BlackeyedGruesome · 07/03/2019 20:35

If you are managing to get hidden veg into him, he is probably getting most of what he needs, especially with the vitamins.

Look up what he needs, look at where he can get those nutrients and work out whether you have everything covered with the range of foods he will eat. Ds was quite limited for a while and went veggie. It was less worrying when I knew he was getting all he needed from what he ate and I was able to adjust what he ate and give him more of one or two of his safe foods.

Moorfields · 07/03/2019 21:37

I've just got my tesco delivery and I have no idea where to store it all. I'm not working tomorrow so it looks like I'll be spending my day off clearing the garage. It's a complete tip atm but if I clear a bit of it out I'll be able to make space for 500 odd tins & packets!

NoWordForFluffy · 07/03/2019 21:42

@Graphista, did you see this photo?

Had my op today so really groggy after the GA. It'll probably take a day or so until I'm firing on all cylinders re posting.

And 6 weeks until I can use my dominant arm again! Shock

Speedy recovery NoWordForFluffy Thanks

Onescaredmuma · 07/03/2019 22:03

Thanks that's brilliant he loves ice cream I've made banana ice cream before when I was off dairy and I never even thought about doing that again. Tip for any vegans or anyone dairy free mix it with the hard coconut cream from a tin of coconut milk and a spoon of Coco powder for dairy free chocolate ice cream it's amazing. That reminds me that I need Coco powder.
I'm really struggling with veg he just knows when I've put some into his food He eats mash potato which I can smuggle tiny amounts of blended veg into too but he won't eat smash though so I've bought frozen mash but don't want to fill the freezer with it in case he won't eat it. He also only likes homemade chips done in an acti fry so I really hope things turn out OK as I don't have much storage space for Potatoes and we go through a lot. although the way things are looking it's going to be a complete shit storm. Sad thankfully my older kids eat everything I put in front of them so they're not a worry although they may mutiny if I run out of cheese!
My strawberry patch is looking good and last year i got a small basket every 2 days for about 3-4 weeks and I planted a couple more last year so I'm hoping that will keep them with some fresh fruit too. I've planted some tomatoe seeds too but don't seem to be getting anything yet I got loads last year I'm hoping to manage the same again as my girls will happily eat tomatoes all day! I think I'm still. Burying my head in the sand a bit but if I think too much about this my anxiety goes crazy I can't handle feeling like I have no control over the welfare of my family.

BlackeyedGruesome · 07/03/2019 22:37

Friends who have had food resistant children have been told to feed them what they will eat to get enough calories. That was chips and chicken nuggets. Or just chips.

Think of the family as a whole. If you can feed the others with stored, cheaper varieties, use the money saved on the food ds will eat. will eat. Move resources around so that everyone gets their needs met.

BlackeyedGruesome · 07/03/2019 22:37

Bluelonerose · 08/03/2019 05:41

I am still feeling woefully under prepped.
I'm running out of room and am struggling to keep up with shopping for normal and brexit stash.

One week I freak out and buy 10 tins of tomatoes next week I find another 30 under the bed. I thought I was organised too Hmm

bellinisurge · 08/03/2019 06:49

@Bluelonerose -work on the basis that:
a) anything is better than nothing;
b) no one (not even a general prepper like me) can be in some "perfect " state of preparedness;AND
c) putting some focus on being in a good place emotionally is also an important prep.

NoWordForFluffy · 08/03/2019 07:47

Morning!

I'm feeling more normal today. Smile I'll get DH to take me to Farmfoods to get sugar, cheese and butter. Plus more snacks! 😁🐷

BlackeyedGruesome · 08/03/2019 10:03

Especially things you can open and eat with one hand.

Just been wrestling with opening packs of tomato sauce in the café. Grin

Chopped tomatoes keep. Don't worry. I am nearly finished. More loo roll required to achieve my arbitrary number, then keeping on top of the topping up.

Got to check the medical thread to see what I need. Went past the pharmacy and spotted imodium. Today is finishing putting away the last bits of the last lot of shopping. I am finishing hidey hole number 5 today. This is the biggest. The rest are tiny, a couple of things in each. I am also going through the list to check whether I hav a years worth of one thing and two days of another. 10 packs of X could last a couple of months while 10 packs of Y may last a few days if we all have one a day for example.

I have accidentally got a years worth of kitchen bin liners.

NoWordForFluffy · 08/03/2019 10:07

At least you'll keep on top of the rubbish! 😂

And yes. Good job you reminded me about that. Imagine have a load of snacks staring at you that you couldn't open! 😱😱😱

Sounds like you're doing well. I need to freeze eggs, but will shop after next week's vote (first thing on 13th!) if I think that's necessary.

GeistohneGrenzen · 08/03/2019 12:30

Fluffy Glad you've recovered from the GA Flowers

Last year when starting to stash I bought some dried egg powder and bbe date is August this year; I ran out of fresh eggs the other week and wanted an omelette, so opened the pack. It was surprisingly good and so simple to make up, just one tablespoon of powder mixed with two T of water equated to one medium egg. When you first open the pack it has a slightly strange smell, but that went entirely and with the finished dish you'd never have known fresh eggs weren't used...can be used for scrambled eggs, omelettes and baking.

I've tracked down the one I originally bought on eBay - Interegg in Essex/Cambs - and would recommend it although the price seems to have gone up a fair bit since then. It's guaranteed salmonella free, anti-bird flu virus (or something like that, I think) and is pasteurised spray dried whole egg, with at least a year ahead for bbe date. Some of the others for sale on eBay are recommended for use as carp bait when fishing as well as human consumption and I suppose would be o.k. but the dual purpose statement rather put me off!!

Anyway, it's just a thought...

prettybird · 08/03/2019 15:42

That reminds me: I need to buy extra condensed milk, caster sugar and butter (and freeze some milk). I can then make tablet for a sweet treat - and as I make exceedingly good tablet, could barter it Grin

NoWordForFluffy · 08/03/2019 15:58

Home Bargains had caster sugar for 79p/kg today which is a great price!

Belindabelle · 08/03/2019 16:10

My local Tesco had bags of pasta for 20p! Hearty Food Brand which I think is Tesco’s own brand label. No idea of the quality but I bought loads, some for my stash, Scouts and the food bank.

BlackeyedGruesome · 08/03/2019 17:33

20p pasta is probably the value pasta with a new name.

I am wondering at what point to buy potatoes and fresh veg. Too early and they go off, too late and sold out.

I have nearly everything now. Just a few last bits. Importantly fishfingers

BlackeyedGruesome · 08/03/2019 17:34

I think I will get some spuds on Monday. Some is better than none.
