This thread is for those prepping for brexit and building up their family stores for the possibility of no deal and food shortages and/or delays.
Suggestions welcome on what to stash.

Hi all, I've been away from the subject for a while as some of you may be aware from previous posts I find it a bit too anxiety inducing at times to think about it too much.

I've added a weird item to shopping list "special offers" stupidly it didn't occur to me to check these (I shop online so they're not "in my face") which means I tend to also fall into the trap of constantly re-ordering "favourites" when dd and I are no longer really enjoying the "favourites" - would this be "grocery fatigue"? as it isn't just meals. Bad habit.

"Slightly off topic, are the branded tinned tomatoes any better than the cheap ones?" Personally I think very few people would notice the difference and certainly chefs I've worked with don't think it an issue.

"and now been told DH mustnt eat tomatoes as they are too acidic... sigh" ouch! How come?

Got smoked sausage in for dd but she keeps eating everything else! It's shocking how much a size 8, 18 year old girl eats! I pity the mners with teen sons as I know they eat even more, what's even more shocking is that according to her friends (slim but not as slim) she "barely eats" in comparison to them! On a working day she has 2 breakfasts (cereal at home, hot roll at work), a hearty packed lunch or pasta dish and pudding (and they're HUGE portions) then big dinner and pud again at home, then supper before bed plus seems to be constantly snacking! Now partly she does have a higher metabolism due to her disability and she's a very active person walks pretty much everywhere but still... Yet it's really only from TRYING to build a buffer for her that I'm noticing cos the buggers gradually build up to eating weightlifter portions

NoWordForFluffy - interested to know what loo roll that you get from aldi? I too have a loo that can't cope with luxury paper. Dd would have to get it so I'd need an exact description to give her.

"How many days worth of food are you all stocking?" I have no idea how to assess this accurately.

I have a full small freezer so that's probably about a weeks worth max inc sliced bread as we don't eat it enough not to freeze it (did I mention SMALL freezer), 3-4 days in fridge for me (I'm home more, if I get short life for dd I was finding it didn't get used and it tends to end up thrown out), but also 2 X butter, large block cheddar, 3 X smoked cheese (has a long shelf life), cupboard - 2kg pasta, 2.5 kg cous cous, 3 tins potatoes, 3-4 boxes breakfast cereal (dd tends to like this as a supper/snack), 3-4 packs of savoury crackers, about 12-15 poss 20 tins veg, 12 ish tins fruit, custard, rice pud, 3-4 jars pesto, 6 sachets stir fry sauces (normally make my own but health in last year not been great so struggling with both motivation and energy to cook), 4 tins tuna, 3 tins ham for dd and 1 tin pilchards, a shit ton (official measurement 😂) of passata, a grape punnet (another official measurement gained from these threads 😂😂) full of herbs and spices, 2 bags sugar, large box tea bags and large jar of coffee, jam, marmalade, peanut butter and choc spread oh and honey, jar hot choc, 2 32L crates in my room containing drinks (water and cans as that's what I normally drink), crisps & savoury snacks (in a large carrier bag actually), sweets, biscuits and cakes (meds make me crave carbs/drop my blood sugar) I generally try to resist but sometimes it's eat sugar or pass out/throw up so sugar the better option).

How long will that last us? If dds work still get food in ok then I reckon 3 weeks at least? What do u guys think? (Please be gentle I'm very nervous) it's just me and dd.

"I can't bring myself to buy tinned veg though." Some veg I actually prefer tinned version though I tend to fresh or frozen normally as supposedly healthier. Sweetcorn, green beans, peas, carrots, tomatoes (several tins), potatoes (never buy fresh potatoes as dd doesn't eat them at all and I rarely do).

I've definitely noticed prices going up.

"Like voices of calm sometimes" yep especially when there's utter bollocks spouted by brexiters on other brexit threads.

Did anyone see this today?

NoWordForFluffy · 06/03/2019 20:39

I think you have a fair bit there, Graphista. I used to be like your DD. It now takes a fair bit of effort to maintain a size 10, but back in the day I was proper skinny and ate SO much food! I doubt any teen boy put away more than I did. 😂😂

I'll get a photo of the loo roll next time one of us heads that way. Then you can easily show your DD.

We also have loads of snacks and treats in our store too. If all else fails, a Kit Kat May perk us up! 😂

I think someone mentioned at some point a list of veg / fresh stuff that lasts outside the fridge for a while, to buy nearer the time. I've seen a lot of talk of unwashed potatoes, and also thinking onions, red cabbage, sweet potatoes. Any other thoughts?

bellinisurge · 06/03/2019 21:18

@Peeeas I still have some onions in the garage from last autumn's harvest. I plaited them up and hung them. Still doing well.

SparklySneakers · 06/03/2019 21:21

Sounds good @Graphista!
I've half prepared my list of things. I seem to keep adding most of the things to the treats section! Tonight dd2 said, "what do you mean crisps are a treat?!" They are used to having them daily and I've warned them they are likely to become rationed. She was not impressed.

Who was the lady with the husband told not to eat tomatoes as too acidic? I was thinking you could trade with a friend or neighbour for something else. Or could you add other ingredients to neutralise the acid? Tomatoes aren't good for any GI issues though in general.

oatmilk4breakfast · 06/03/2019 21:27

Ah thanks everyone - bellini thanks for the wine tip! And Fluffy for spuds...sadly no Morrison’s near me...trying to grow but not good gardener...

bellinisurge · 06/03/2019 21:28

If you want to store shop bought veg outside the fridge, see if you can get a study shallow veg box or two from a supermarket (free). Then make a sort of bed of scrunched up paper (newspaper; brown paper from an Amazon delivery; cheapo kitchen roll. Lay the veg in it so they don't touch each other. Store in a cool dark place.
Use the fridge if you have room and store in there as normal but make sure they are out of any plastic packet.

Peeeas · 06/03/2019 21:32

Thanks Bellini, that's helpful. Got lots of tinned, dried etc, so just thinking now about maxxing storage / getting more variety.

SparklySneakers · 06/03/2019 21:45

Any good places for cheap dried mango that isn't tough as leather? Asda sell a pack for £1.50 but it's only 2 portions so gets expensive when there's 4 of us! It's one of the only fruits my dd likes as a snack that doesn't bruise or get squished in her bag. LO would eat a whole packet daily if I let him and I would too. They aren't keen on other dried fruit unfortunately.

OP posts:
Moorfields · 06/03/2019 22:12

This weekend I'll go to Iceland and buy bags of frozen veg and fish. They do 3 bags of fish for £10 so I can choose a variety. I come from a sea faring nation so we're all practically weaned on fish! My kids will eat a variety of different types of fish not just boring cod. So it makes life a little easier for me when it comes to meal ideas.

Our favourite seafood pasta dish is just prawns cooked in butter, garlic & parsley and then tossed in spaghetti. Very quick and easy to do on a school night.

GeistohneGrenzen · 06/03/2019 22:38

Peeeas butternut squash keeps a very long time out of the fridge if the skin isn't damaged (I think one poster said up to a year!). I've had one sitting in a natural woven open cube unit since before Christmas and it's fine. The same time that I bought the squash I also bought a Sweet Snowball melon, stored it in the same cube, and only cut into it yesterday - beautifully fresh and juicy. That was smooth skinned but I should think galia melons might keep well?

yolofish · 06/03/2019 23:52

it's me re the tomatoes/husband. He has stage 3 rectal cancer and has been 'advised' that toms are too acidic (despite no actual official dietary advice). After 3 weeks off toms he says it doesnt make a blind bit of diff, and if he wants toms he will eat them. I cant disagree... 8 more days of combined chemo/radio and then we go back into the limbo of waiting for MRI scan/results/timing for surgery.

AdoraBell · 06/03/2019 23:56

Everything crossed for you yolofish

Graphista · 07/03/2019 00:02

NoWordForFluffy thanks re loo roll that'd be great! Yea all the women in my family (well dads side) are skinny no matter what they eat until they have first child - at whatever age, then it's like "calories caught up with you!"

I was a size 6-8 at her age, the boyfriend I had at the time was a HUGE rugby player (6.5ft tall built like the fucking "Rock" trained or played daily!) and I ate more than him!! His mum even queried with him if I was purging/had ED (which he was able to assure her absolutely wasn't the case) except it's not the pregnancy when the weight goes on it starts about a year later (I have a theory of pregnancy triggered thyroid disease - whole other thread!)

Hopefully I've enough in (actually hopefully the govt doesn't shit the bed in the first fucking place, but that's looking increasingly less likely!) doesn't look like much I've still room in cupboards after my clear out the other week.

Re storing veg/fruit outside the fridge - remember like onions NOT to store bananas near anything as they too speed up ripening.

Just added dried apricots to list, I love prunes but ahem...they don't like me (as my granny would've said).

Moorfields how funny. I'm descended from fishermen/scandi's not sure about dds dads side. The ONE fish dd won't eat - cod! Prawns, tuna, mackerel, pilchards, rollmops (bleurgh I blame my mother for this one), even squid but not cod.

Graphista · 07/03/2019 00:06

Yolofish so sorry you're all going through that. Thanks

I don't blame him if he's wanting to eat toms and feels no worse for it. The advice may be simply based on anecdotes from other patients. Everyone's different though.

I've opened a carton of Moo skimmed milk this morning for our tea and hot chocolate and it tastes just like normal milk. I'm really fussy about milk and I can't tell a difference. I'll stock up on more now I know it's ok in tea.

Cloudtree · 07/03/2019 08:18

I got a 12.5kg sack of unwashed spuds from Morrison's. I think cloudtree May have done too. I paid £6, but they went down to £4 recently.

Yes I bought the morrisons unwashed ones - two bags actually. I have put them into the garage and they are fine at the moment, firm and not sprouting (although already past the date on the front of the sack). It is the season for sprouting through and so I am expecting them to sprout before we get through them all. I just chop off the sprouty bits.

I also have loads chitting but even the first earlies won't be ready until June time. I'm doing two beds this year rather than one. My beds are 8ft by 4ft and 2ft deep so I can get a fair few in.
