This thread is for those prepping for brexit and building up their family stores for the possibility of no deal and food shortages and/or delays.
Suggestions welcome on what to stash.

Yikes there's a lot of loo roll being bought here...I'm starting to think I need to add more to my stash! Do you all have big families or am I just really stingy with my three sheets per flush rule? Blush

StuntEgg · 06/03/2019 10:29

Have Sainsbury's just had a price hike on everything? I stocked up on a some stuff last week, then went back this morning for more, and noticed that quite a few things have gone up. Moo milk in particular; 80p a litre last week, £1.15 today. That's almost 44% more! It's made a huge dent in my limited budget. Tinned mandarins too, £1 last week, £1.10 today, so 10% up. I strongly suspect their "locked down" promo is to distract us from everything else going up...

I'd expected prices would rise a little but not this much, and not before we've even left. I know it will only get worse so I'm very glad I don't have much more to get.

bellinisurge · 06/03/2019 10:36

I thought Sainsbury's were doing a rather disingenuous "price lock" until Brexit. Perhaps it is only on certain goods.

StuntEgg · 06/03/2019 10:46

It is only on certain goods, and some of those prices are pretty good. But for the majority that's not included, it looks like they're going in the opposite direction!

wildchild554 · 06/03/2019 10:56

@NoWordForFluffy have you tried it with some tinned carnation milk mixed with a little water to see if you like that?

SparklySneakers · 06/03/2019 10:58

Asda have the mcvitues hobnob and digestive cake/flapjack bars on offer for 75p so I've got some of those. Dates are until May. My crisis drawer looks like a sugar junkie's paradise Grin

@wildchild554, I'd rather have UHT than that! I'm a bit funny about milk. Which is fine in normal circs!

BlackeyedGruesome · 06/03/2019 18:15

Mine includes a lot of junk food as well. Need more vegetables. Running out of time. 23 days aggghhh.

BlackeyedGruesome · 06/03/2019 18:23

Sainsbury's prices went up about the same time that price lock started. I had to change what I bought there, back to Aldi.

Prices are obviously going up as you have noticed changes stunt.

I am buying things that are on offer and have got most things that way. Still want to get more cereal as D's has recently changed his preferences. Noticed the box size has shrunk as well since I last bought them.

FoodologistGirl · 06/03/2019 18:46

I’m still hoping we find out on the 1st of April that it’s all been an elaborate 2 year hoax. Wouldn’t that be nice Smile

Moorfields · 06/03/2019 18:46

Morrison's have large 750g box of kellog's cornflakes for £2. So I nabbed a few boxes.

oatmilk4breakfast · 06/03/2019 18:47

I started last year by buying big bags of spices. Slightly kicking myself for not realising we had an Aldi in our town sooner. Does anyone have a recommendation on Aldi red wines? Wanted to say thanks so much to people on this thread. Like voices of calm sometimes.

Moorfields · 06/03/2019 18:49

It's hard to forward purchase none processed food. My pile looks like junk food central.

oatmilk4breakfast · 06/03/2019 18:49

cloudtree - could I ask did you order your sack of potatoes online? Where was it from and how long does it last? There are only 3 of us - wouldn’t want them to rot...

NoWordForFluffy · 06/03/2019 18:51

Sainsbury's prices have really gone up. I'm glad we've just had a brand new Aldi open near my house as I go to there now, though I've also got some stuff from Asda as they have the cheapest spring water tuna.

NoWordForFluffy · 06/03/2019 18:57

I got a 12.5kg sack of unwashed spuds from Morrison's. I think cloudtree May have done too. I paid £6, but they went down to £4 recently.

bellinisurge · 06/03/2019 18:58

My dh says that the "cheap red plonk" at Aldi is perfectly passable. He goes for the slightly more expensive red wine there and really likes it.
I'm more a white wine drinker and love their organic Pinot Grigio. Not because it's organic but because it is yummy (for me, anyway).

bellinisurge · 06/03/2019 18:58

That was for @oatmilk4breakfast

bellinisurge · 06/03/2019 19:03

All the talk of spuds prompts me to encourage anyone who's not done it before to try growing your own. Here's a thread on newbie veg gardening for those not already looking at it:
29th March "Grow your own" newcomers welcome here www.mumsnet.com/Talk/gardening/3504562-29th-March-Grow-your-own-newcomers-welcome-here

NoWordForFluffy · 06/03/2019 19:04

I'm growing my own. They won't be ready in 3 weeks though! 🥔

yolofish · 06/03/2019 19:22

Aldi wine is excellent! even the cheap plonk is perfectly drinkable, we like the Toro Loco one. Need to get my wine stocks up, pretty much ok on everything else apart from frozen veg - no one will eat tinned here.

bellinisurge · 06/03/2019 19:32

@NoWordForFluffy , no they won't but it's actually a general prepper thing to think about sustainability.

Moorfields · 06/03/2019 19:50

Will I be leaving it really close to the deadline if I delay buying frozen veg & meat until next weekend?

bellinisurge · 06/03/2019 19:56

Should be fine if that's what your budget says. Better to work to your budget.

NoWordForFluffy · 06/03/2019 20:04

I'm actually growing twice as many spuds as last year all in bags in the garden. My allotment late season ones weren't very productive last year, so we're sticking to bags after having success with them last summer.

I had about 25 chilli plant seedlings too, so I won't be short of those either.

I'm glad I've got an allotment, even though it's not big enough to be self-sustainable.
