Westminstenders: Stuck in the Middle With TIGGERS

Well I don't know how we got here tonight.
We've got the feeling that something ain't right.
We're so scared as we leave the EU
And we're wondering how we'll get out of this stew

Antisemites to the left of me!
Dog Whistles to the right!
Here I am stuck in the middle whilst we leave the EU.

'Cause I'm stuck in the middle whilst we leave the EU.
And I'm wondering what it is we should do.
It's so hard to keep this smile from my face.
Losing control and running all over the place.

Clowns to the left of me!
Jokers to the right!
Here I am stuck in the middle whilst we leave the EU.

When you started off with rights
And you're starting to wonder if thats for life.
And all the politicians come crawling
Slap you on the back and say
Please . . .
Please . . .
Vote Leave and back EU Withdrawal

But we see it makes no sense at all.

Best to keep your money offshore
Than to visit the bookstore

Deniers to the left of me!
Islamaphobes to the right!
Here I am stuck in the middle with you.

Its finally happened. FINALLY.

MPs have seen that their leaders have lost the plot and are hell bent on destruction and politicial ideology ahead of practicality and will justify the unjustifable in the face of democracy and they have jumped ship.

Enter stage left and stage right: The TIGGERS - members of The Independent Group.

Will there be more. Hard to say no. It seems almost certain there will be more.

Will it make a difference? Difficult to call, but these MPs would be driven out sooner or later. Such is our accelerating politicial polarisation and narrowing of views. This is their last stand. They have nothing left to lose on a personal level.

Whether you agree with the TIGGERS or still look to the other parties for policy, I do think that the emergence of the TIGGERS marks a feeling of optimism and much needed hope for many many Remainers / Moderates, even if it ultimately does fizzle out.

A reflection from 2017: People voted for Corbyn because they were looking for Hope. When he's failed to deliver that, its led to disillusionment and he can not pull the same trick again at a future GE. This makes that doubly so. People are STILL very much looking for that hope. If Brexit does go tits up in a big fashion, then what happens? To what direction do people look? I'm sure there will be the bitterest of recriminations, but... hope is a big deal. We need something...

Tick tick tick. 37 days til Brexit.

Surely part of the reason some Jewish people thought they could stay and survive Hitler was because they had been through so many pogroms before.

Most stayed because the rest of the world denied them visas.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89vian_Conference Everyone knew what the Jews were fleeing, and the Jews certainly did, but nobody wanted to let them in.

China was an exception - many settled in Shanghai for the duration of the war, under Japanese rule.

Wrt Maduro - the stance wrt humanitarian aid has to be seen against the backdrop of the blatant State Department effort to topple him and replace him with Guaidó, their handpicked successor whom they trust to shift Venezuela and its oil out of the orbit of Russia.

Maduro is blocking humanitarian aid because it is important for the future of his regime to be seen to be able to do that, to be seen to be in control of army units and customs officials. He is hanging on because the army remains loyal to him.

Maduro's failure is the result of US policy toward Venezuela, which has been punished for its pro-Russian and pro-Cuban policies. None of that would matter if Venezuela did not have oil of course.

Sostenueto · 24/02/2019 06:19

Its always been about oil. There's not much left of it worldwide. Whoever has got oil can expect a war of some sort usually fuelled by the US and Russia ( chance for them to play with their latest weapons too).

{Whoever has got oil can expect a war of some sort usually fuelled by the US and Russia ( chance for them to play with their latest weapons too).}

With the irony that going to war over oil wastes so much of it.
Like the bombing of so many places where (usual) concrete is used in construction, concrete being one of the most energy and resource hungry materials. Cement manufacture is one of the highest factors in Co2 production.

BigChocFrenzy · 24/02/2019 09:18

Regardless of how much US hostility caused Venezuela's problems - and Trump is very pro-Putin on most issues -
it is utterly wrong to stop aid to hungry people,
even setting fire to it in some cases

BigChocFrenzy · 24/02/2019 09:21

Imagine how we'd feel if the Tories used police to stop donations to food banks
and even set fire to food lorries

The principle is the same, whether it is left or right preventing hungry people receiving humanitarian aid

Missbel · 24/02/2019 10:33

The persecution of Jews has been far-reaching and widespread. Here in south Wales there were serious anti-Jewish riots, especially in Tredegar, back in 1911 - not widely known about thee days. It seems to have been the case that, as so often happens, the Jewish population were made scapegoats for the social and economic problems that the area faced.

Tonsilss · 24/02/2019 12:55

That's pretty much what the Tories did when Cameron refused a large donation to help the poor, from the EU.

There is masses of oil left in the ground.
More than enough for us to utterly nadger the climate several times over.
Much of it is uneconomic to extract
and even more of it is immoral to extract

let alone coal

Clavinova · 24/02/2019 17:58

There's not much left of it worldwide
This was a copy and paste correction from Sostenueto's post above.

DGRossetti · 24/02/2019 18:37

There is masses of oil left in the ground. More than enough for us to utterly nadger the climate several times over. Much of it is uneconomic to extract

But as prices rise, so does the economic viability of previously uneconomic deposits (like Cornish tin).

The Chinese attempt to control the rare-earth metal supplies should be an exemplar
