Westminstenders: Stuck in the Middle With TIGGERS

RedToothBrush · 20/02/2019 14:20

Well I don't know how we got here tonight.
We've got the feeling that something ain't right.
We're so scared as we leave the EU
And we're wondering how we'll get out of this stew

Antisemites to the left of me!
Dog Whistles to the right!
Here I am stuck in the middle whilst we leave the EU.

'Cause I'm stuck in the middle whilst we leave the EU.
And I'm wondering what it is we should do.
It's so hard to keep this smile from my face.
Losing control and running all over the place.

Clowns to the left of me!
Jokers to the right!
Here I am stuck in the middle whilst we leave the EU.

When you started off with rights
And you're starting to wonder if thats for life.
And all the politicians come crawling
Slap you on the back and say
Please . . .
Please . . .
Vote Leave and back EU Withdrawal

But we see it makes no sense at all.

Best to keep your money offshore
Than to visit the bookstore

Deniers to the left of me!
Islamaphobes to the right!
Here I am stuck in the middle with you.

Its finally happened. FINALLY.

MPs have seen that their leaders have lost the plot and are hell bent on destruction and politicial ideology ahead of practicality and will justify the unjustifable in the face of democracy and they have jumped ship.

Enter stage left and stage right: The TIGGERS - members of The Independent Group.

Will there be more. Hard to say no. It seems almost certain there will be more.

Will it make a difference? Difficult to call, but these MPs would be driven out sooner or later. Such is our accelerating politicial polarisation and narrowing of views. This is their last stand. They have nothing left to lose on a personal level.

Whether you agree with the TIGGERS or still look to the other parties for policy, I do think that the emergence of the TIGGERS marks a feeling of optimism and much needed hope for many many Remainers / Moderates, even if it ultimately does fizzle out.

A reflection from 2017: People voted for Corbyn because they were looking for Hope. When he's failed to deliver that, its led to disillusionment and he can not pull the same trick again at a future GE. This makes that doubly so. People are STILL very much looking for that hope. If Brexit does go tits up in a big fashion, then what happens? To what direction do people look? I'm sure there will be the bitterest of recriminations, but... hope is a big deal. We need something...

Tick tick tick. 37 days til Brexit.

It's nice to see Hunt and Williamson job sharing the whole 'offending foreign nations' thing.

BigChocFrenzy · 23/02/2019 14:50

John Bull@garius

HAMMOND: So, the ONE THING we've done this week is make China and Japan agree for the FIRST TIME since WW2.
And it's that we're idiots.

God I hope Theresa's day is going better.

Jeremy Hunt is usually extremely careful not to antagonise anyone in case he has to swap sides.
He appears to have undergone a personality transplant recently.

BigChocFrenzy · 23/02/2019 15:12

Not that recently - ever since he became Foreign Sec
and very soon made very insulting remarks comparing EU countries to USSR etc

Quintella · 23/02/2019 15:26

Poor old Jezza Hunt can't even remember that his own wife is Chinese.

Mistigri · 23/02/2019 15:54

Louise Mensch is obsessed with Russian interference in US politics so this climb-down on Brexit doesn't surprise me (in fact she stopped cheerleading for Brexit as her interest in Russian involvement in the US increased). But I don't think anyone in the U.K. cares what she thinks anymore.

mrslaughan · 23/02/2019 15:56

Jeremy hunt 😳😱🤦‍♀️

Mistigri · 23/02/2019 15:56

I suppose the main virtue of Hunt and Williamson (and Javid and BoJo) is that they collectively make a leadership competition less likely on the unlikely grounds that May is head and shoulders above them all.

At least Labour has a number of heavyweight contenders even if they are unlikely to get a shot at the leadership any time soon.

SusanWalker · 23/02/2019 15:57

Jeremy Hunt who refused to give up his job at health because he had so much he wanted to get done, until TM offered him foreign secretary and he decided the NHS could do without him after all.

Clavinova · 23/02/2019 16:15

He's been forgiven then...

www.presstv.com/Detail/2019/02/22/589234/China-trade-talks-UK-Philip-Hammond

China has reversed its decision to cancel trade talks with the UK after British Finance Minister Philip Hammond criticized London’s military plans for the deployment of a British warship in the Pacific.

“China sets great store on Sino-Britain ties, and hopes Britain can earnestly respect China’s core interests and concerns, and make efforts for promoting the healthy and stable development of relations,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said at a daily news briefing in Beijing on Friday.

China also said it would welcome a visit by the British finance minister to enhance bilateral relations.

“As for the issue of Chancellor Hammond visiting China, we have said that we welcome him to visit,” Geng added, without elaborating.

missbell those Harris quotes are pure genius!

Clavinova · 23/02/2019 16:23

Not too shabby;
Record UK government surplus in January

Rather presupposes anyone did ....

BigChocFrenzy · 23/02/2019 16:34

It#s confusing with so many Uk Cabinet ministers insulting other countries !

China row was not Hunt's fault, afaik

China may not have forgiven Williamson

  • who was threatening to send the aircraft carrier QE11, which is not yet built not yet built - to the S China Sea

It's Hammond they are inviting (after cancelling)
He hasn't offended any foreign countries so far, not even threatened Ireland
Maybe one reason why Brexiters hate him so much

Clavinova · 23/02/2019 16:40

BigChocFrenzy
Just for the record I was talking about Philip Hammond - as per the copy and paste.

Missbel · 23/02/2019 16:42

No time for L Mensch, but even at the time of the referendum, it seemed to me that Putin's enthusiasm for Brexit would, on its own, have been a very sufficient reason to think critically about it.

Clavinova · 23/02/2019 16:43

Not Jeremy Hunt.

Clavinova · 23/02/2019 16:46

Oh, I see - they've reported incorrectly - but saying this as well;

A British government source said Williamson’s speech had been cleared in advance by both Hammond’s department and Prime Minister Theresa May’s office.

67chevvyimpala · 23/02/2019 16:49

L mensch is vacuous

BigChocFrenzy · 23/02/2019 16:49

Clavinova Hammond never offended them either.

It was Williamson's infantile sabre-rattling, which Hammond has condemned
So the Chinese govt know he is an adult and hence re-invited him

BigChocFrenzy · 23/02/2019 16:52

This is the most incompetent govt in living memory, whose former Foreign Secretary proclaimed at a diplomatic reception:
"Fuck business"

What will help "fuck business" in the longterm:

  • The slide in UK investment by both foreign & UK firms
  • the increased take in corporation tax is partly because tax-deductible investment is down.
  • Banks & insurance companies moving their money out of the UK.
Car manufacturers planning to move out

  • The economy being boosted by high consumer spending, with unsecured private debt at record levels, worse than before the 2008 crash

  • The Uk dropping from having one of the highest growth rates in the G20 before the 2016 ref, to one of the lowest now

  • .... and of course the economic disaster of No Deal, if it happens,
or the slow drain of the WA if that happens instead
All caused by "a Tory catfight that got out of hand"

DGRossetti · 23/02/2019 16:55

I'm not a fan of bogeymen ... it would help an awful **ing lot, if we tried to out think the "Russia:bad" grunts, and sought some deeper understanding of their psyche. For myself, I suspect they are much less set on world domination than their USSR forebears, and much more about ensuring their security as a function of their enemies - and more importantly neighbours - weakness. So a weak EU is much less of a threat to a country which knows the risks of being weak itself.

If that's the case, then a Europe that's too weak is not a great idea for Russia either - look what happened last time Hmm

BiglyBadgers · 23/02/2019 16:57

L mensch is vacuous

This is a true fact. I can't stand the woman personally, but try and read a leaver occasionally just break my echo chamber or whatevers. Wouldn't want anyone to think I'm living in an elitist remainer bubble or nothing Wink Grin

BigChocFrenzy · 23/02/2019 16:59

Mensch is EInstein compared to Dorries, Leadsom, Patel, ....

TalkinPeece · 23/02/2019 17:03

I had a canvasser knock on my door today (local by election soon)
poor girl, I think she thought I might say nice things about her party leader Grin
And I told her that Brexit IS a local issue because it will soon impact on every household Sad
