Westminstenders: Competitive Stupidity

RedToothBrush · 10/02/2019 16:00

A week of wondering which MP is going to be the most dumb.

There is stiff competition between parties and remain / leave.

Expect incredible bids of ignorance and incompetence to curl your toes, with a bit of constitutional craziness thrown in for good measure.

Valentine's Day beckons...

... And so does the No Deal Divorce.

There is really nothing as strange as folk.

Jericho1 · 12/02/2019 16:25

Just in case apparently

I reckon the whole of the 2019 exam co hort will be cancelled or severely compromised, have done for months now..

"Body Bags and nullifying your kids' education" wasn't on the bus either.

🚨PARLIAMENTARY WEEDS KLAXON: CRAG & Brexit🚨
The Constitutional Reform and Governance Act 2010 says new international treaties must have a 21 day cooling off period after they have been presented to Parliament to allow MPs to decide if they want to block ratifying it.

Downing Street is considering trying to disapply the CRAG process for the Withdrawal Agreement if the Brexit timeline is tight and the 21 day period would take the UK past the March 29 Brexit deadline.

Downing Street would do that by inserting a clause into the Withdrawal Agreement Bill - the legislation which will enact the deal which must be passed before March 29 - saying that CRAG doesn't apply.

Downing Street would argue that the CRAG 21 day period would not be needed because MPs would already be very familiar with the contents of the Brexit treaty given the fact they have spent months debating what is in it.

Also: If MPs vote down the Withdrawal Agreement Bill the treaty itself will effectively be dead any way. So the CRAG process would be irrelevant.

There's an excellent @commonslibrary briefing setting out how CRAG works here: researchbriefings.parliament.uk/ResearchBriefing/Summary/SN

Problems straight off the bat for the Govt: Labour say they will oppose any proposal to disapply the CRAG process.

Paul Blomfield, shadow Brexit minister, said it shows "contempt for our democracy".

“Labour will oppose this change, which would deny Parliament full scrutiny.”

For clarity: We need 2 things to Brexit
🔸The Brexit treaty - the Withdrawal Agreement/Political Declaration text agreed by EU/UK. This will have to be ratified.
🔸The Withdrawal Agreement Bill - this will enact what it is in the Brexit deal and must be agreed by Parliament.

I do wish we had a muscular constitution and a Nancy Pelosi ready to do the you clap to May.

Jericho1 · 12/02/2019 16:26

'**you clap' that should have read.

TheElementsSong · 12/02/2019 16:26

Lovely squirrels 🐿🐿🐿Ball - do you suppose they've buried the link to the 500-page Brexit White Paper along with their nuts? Grin

Interesting article lonelyplanet and a welcome re-railment.

Hazards · 12/02/2019 16:28

susan yes! I know that feeling precisely! It's a mare trying to explain it to normal sized people.

prettybird · 12/02/2019 16:28

Lucygoeswalkies - we have three Siamese at the moment, but we think the old girl (15) is on her way out Sad

But the two brothers we got to keep her company after our other cat was killed in a hit & run are a delight Smile

Destiel · 12/02/2019 16:28

Oh, I'd love to be tall!

BiglyBadgers · 12/02/2019 16:29

I'm a sad person and only 5'5" which I had thought was around average but appears to be quite little on these threads.

I am sad that we are throwing away my daughter's future for an idea of sovereignty that will bring no clear benefit. I am sad that the people who we elected to act in our interests seem only capable of thinking of themselves. I am sad that so many seem so willing to end the hard won peace brought by the GFA. I am sad our economy will be tanked, fresh food will be harder to buy, medications will be delayed. I am sad people will die unnecessarily for blue passports and misconceptions and lies.

Please give me your pity. Pity all of us in the country that will suffer because of this idiocy that is brexit.

StepLadders007 · 12/02/2019 16:30

Question for the Left-Wingers on this thread.

I've been bemused by the lack of action and lack of Leadership by the labour party these last few months.

What's been going on or has Corbyn et al just firmly pinned their hopes to the mast of cleaning up at the next GE?

Surely they've missed a gild-edged opportunity?

Sostenueto · 12/02/2019 16:30

I'm 5'3" I was 5'5" but am shrinking in line with our economy!

BiglyBadgers · 12/02/2019 16:30

I've found myself reading Philip Larkin this afternoon. Always a sure sign of sadness.

BiglyBadgers · 12/02/2019 16:32

Steps I think Corbyn's shitness has been covered pretty extensively on this thread by all sides of the political spectrum. You won't find many fans on here.

DGRossetti · 12/02/2019 16:32

Pity all of us in the country that will suffer because of this idiocy that is brexit.

And the countries around the world that in some small way depend on the UK - either directly or indirectly.

PestyMachtubernahme · 12/02/2019 16:32

Haven't read Philip Larkins for yonks Bigly
Thanks for the good idea.

TheElementsSong · 12/02/2019 16:32

I'm a bit over 5'4" which makes me quite a bit larger than a squirrel.

StepLadders007 · 12/02/2019 16:33

all sides of the political spectrum

You mean the centre left, the left and the far left?

:)

TokyoSushi · 12/02/2019 16:34

Ooh marvellous @RedToothBrush that might mean the final big bonanza it's my deal or no deal vote might be on my birthday - what a treat! Gin

BiglyBadgers · 12/02/2019 16:35

And all our echo chamber destroyers like your good self of course...

TheElementsSong · 12/02/2019 16:35

Grey, red and blue squirrels, all to blame for burying that 500-page Brexit White Paper that would answer everybody's questions, if only it hadn't been forgotten - ergo, squirrels must be Remainers!

StepLadders007 · 12/02/2019 16:35

And all our echo chamber destroyers like your good self of course

Touche

Whiney123 · 12/02/2019 16:37

name changed because these westminster threads are toxic dens of passive aggressive bullshit

Stepladder - my advice: just leave them to it in here. You can’t win - they have all the smugness in the world and don’t want intruders detracting from their delusions Of Being Right About What’s Good For The Little People. Let them wallow in their love of the eu superstate. At least this way we keep all the nutters in one place.

LonelyandTiredandLow · 12/02/2019 16:38

But, as leavers you guys DID win?
Get over it?
Or come up with a plan...either would work to "sort us out" in here Smile

StepLadders007 · 12/02/2019 16:40

Whiney,

Thanks and noted. I see you have letters at the end of your name, according to some around her that means you have a penchant for smart but sinister uniforms and jackboots, run, save yourself.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 12/02/2019 16:40

Bloody 🐿 elements. I bet they could see the level of nuttiness and whipped that 500 page white paper away.

The feeling of height can be subjective. I'm 5'5 but a really shorty in my family. Conversely a DF of mine is 5'10 but the tallest by some margin in his. Came as a shock when we realised we were both pretty average heights Grin
