Westministenders: A Special Place in Hell

A quick start to a new thread (as I've not been paying attention this evening!).

May is looking to ditch the Malthouse Compromise. Cos its so rubbish.

The ERG look like they are splitting over it anyway.

Up to sixty Labour MPs could back the WA.

Half the ERG plus Labour Leave Rebels could be enough to get the WA over the line.

Donald Tusk, makes controversial comment by more or less stating the obvious.

Very sad to arrive home last night to see that Liverpool Wavertree CLP had seemingly been “leant on” to withdraw their “no confidence” motion in Luciana Berger.

Sadly, she has been in the media, doing what is is claimed by the motion that she had been doing, e.g. not dissocating herself from leaving the Labour Party.

www.thejc.com/news/uk-news/luciana-berger-faces-no-confidence-motion-from-her-constituency-labour-party-1.479711

I expect that the pressure on the CLP was pretty strong, it would look pretty bad doing this while the country if 50 days from Brexit, but I hope they revisit it at the earliest opportunity

The motion said nothing about anti semitism, of course. Text is here

So Grayling just noticed:
Wot, no ships

I wouldn't like to call Tory MPs slow, but they kind of make it hard not to.

And thanks for the Shipping Minister link Continuity.

Anyone listen to the latest The political party podcast with Matt Forde? Tony Blair is the guest and he so clearly states the issues and debunks leaver arguments. He still thinks a second referendum is the answer and doesn’t seem to appreciate the public mood though. He thinks everyone is worried. David Blunkett the other week was excellent too.

Why would you be sad about that?

BigChocFrenzy · 09/02/2019 11:07

The motion didn't specifically state it was because of her calling out anti-semitism in Corbyn's Labour machine

but local officials and wider Labour had repeatedly condemned her for daring to hint that Corbyn is tolerating & minimising anti-semitism

Whether she was leaver or remainer, I would be totally opposed to that nasty anti-semitic Labour cabal forcing her out

TatianaLarina · 09/02/2019 11:08

Yep.

BigChocFrenzy · 09/02/2019 11:18

LouiseCollins I'm curious why you would also not be supporting someone who so bravely calls out anti-semitism

I'm also wondering why you condemn David Lammy over his remarks about the Broadwater Farm riots, which occurred 34 years ago.
I can't find the support you claimed he has for rioters and murderers - he calls them "violent thugs"
e.g. his own words:

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2011/aug/07/tottenham-riot-broadwater-farm

You don't seem to like politicians who call out racism or anti-semitism,
or is it just that the MPs who do this are more likely to be sympathetic to Remain and that trumps everything else for you ?

Icantreachthepretzels · 09/02/2019 11:47

just a friendly reminder - posters who have 2 digit numbers after their names are rarely posting in good faith. Especially if the rest of their name is an actual name.

If you remember that rule and mentally filter out their posts, accordingly you'll find threads remain much more pleasant, factual and on topic.

lonelyplanetmum · 09/02/2019 11:50

Im curious why, when there is so much to be very sad about, LouiseCollins would hone in on the Liverpool Wavertree CLP withdrawal of a no confidence motion in Luciana Berger. Unless of course it is Louise's constituency?

Quite frankly having a UK government that was found in contempt of parliament for the first time in history is a ground for sadness.

Having a government that turned on against Windrush invitees is a ground for sadness.

Having a PM who ploughs on regardless despite having sustained the heaviest parliamentary defeat of any British prime minister ever is a cause for sadness.

The fact that a former attorney general had to battle against his own government for parliamentary sovereignty to get a meaningful vote on any deal leaving the EU is a cause for sadness.

The whole shitshow is a cause for feeling beyond sad. Singling out an unjustified no confidence motion in one Jewish Labour MP can't be top priority surely? At the end of the day, whilst important, it is one MP , in one area of the country, representing problems in one political Party. Surely this pales into insignificance in the context of the total constitutional and economic meltdown?

In the words of our 2019 Eurovision entry, surely there are things that are bigger than that?

Conflicting predictions in the media about whether May will hold the next debate / vote as planned mid-Feb,

or delay a week, or delay until late March, i.e. literally a few days before Brexit^

BigChocFrenzy · 09/02/2019 12:03

One final chance for Cooper-Booles plan again ?
If vote is delayed to late March, there wouldn't be time, but February is possible

Tory party pressure on May NOT to apply for A50 extension

Apparently not even for all the necessary accompanying laws, whether WA or WTO
So is her plan to use Emergency Powers / Henry VIII to force these through ?

https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/brexit/8388031/brexit-delay-local-election-wipe-out/amp/?twitterr_impression=true

.... local government bosses and Cabinet ministers have warned No10 as well as the Tory party’s chairman
that its vote at the council polls on May 2 will be decimated
if they are seen to have broken the key Brexit promise.

That gives the PM just a five week extra window to wrap up Brexitit_ and pass all necessary new laws, and 12 weeks in total from now^

BiglyBadgers · 09/02/2019 12:34

And if she pushes the next WA vote back to March she will have even less time. Flipping hell.

Tonsilss · 09/02/2019 12:36

It's pretty clear TM doesn't give a toss about the country or people.

SusanWalker · 09/02/2019 12:49

I'd be very surprised if those local elections happen if we crash out. But I suppose that's the point.

If we extend elections go ahead, Tories lose seats for extending.

If we crash out, TM uses martial law to call off elections in case of riots, Tories cannot be annihilated because they cause no deal.

LouiseCollins28 · 09/02/2019 12:51

@Bigchoc, from the article you linked to.
Lammy: “A police officer, Keith Blakelock, lost his life” makes it sound like an act of mere carelessness, pretty bloody callous considering the circs of this man’s murder, in my opinion.

Juells · 09/02/2019 12:52

It's pretty clear TM doesn't give a toss about the country or people.

A point someone made on Press Preview a few nights ago was that she's acted as if only Brexit supporters have rights, everything is geared towards satisfying them, with no care for the almost-half who didn't want to leave. She drew all those red lines right at the beginning - presumably to establish her Leave credentials - and has been hogtied with them ever since, but still won't acknowledge that.

SusanWalker · 09/02/2019 13:06

I heard a commentator point out that her two main jobs are what are informing her choices.

So party chairman, which drives her to save the Tory party at all costs.

Home office, immigration.

I think someone said on an earlier thread that she doesn't care about brexit in itself, but that she was driven by reducing immigration.

That's why she won't scale back on her red lines. SM means immigration, which she doesn't want. CU means ECJ which the ERG won't wear and splits the party.

Absolutely no concerns for the country as a whole. But dressed up with respecting the will of the people to give a veneer of concern.

LonelyandTiredandLow · 09/02/2019 13:12

All of them have fingers in the Brexit pie profiteering.

LonelyandTiredandLow · 09/02/2019 13:14

I burnt some toast this morning (kids had been playing with dials) and briefly felt like a tit, then instantly felt better because at least I didn't hire a shipping company with no ships and expect them to help feed the nation. Yes it's worrying they are in control, but it does put minor screw ups into perspective!

DarlingNikita · 09/02/2019 13:19

I think someone said on an earlier thread that she doesn't care about brexit in itself, but that she was driven by reducing immigration.

I couldn't agree more. She's a fanatic.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 09/02/2019 13:20

We are all paragons of competence compared to this shit show government.

I’ve been resigned to a no deal brexit for some time now, and I still think it’s the likely outcome despite all the (false) reassurances.

SusanWalker · 09/02/2019 13:23

Fabulous lonely. I am very prone to being hard on myself if something goes wrong. From now on I too am going to remind myself that I am still more competent than Chris Grayling and that at least I didn't give the country a referendum, without any thought to the consequences.

SusanWalker · 09/02/2019 13:26

I would also like to know what influence TMs husband has had on this process and what effect that has had on his business dealings.

On remainiacs Ian Dunt said he's more worried about July than March. He thinks we will extend but it would be legally difficult for the EU to extend after the EP elections so we will crash out then.
