Westministenders: A Special Place in Hell

A quick start to a new thread (as I've not been paying attention this evening!).

May is looking to ditch the Malthouse Compromise. Cos its so rubbish.

The ERG look like they are splitting over it anyway.

Up to sixty Labour MPs could back the WA.

Half the ERG plus Labour Leave Rebels could be enough to get the WA over the line.

Donald Tusk, makes controversial comment by more or less stating the obvious.

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 07/02/2019 20:38

yolo - ah think you’re the other side of Dover to me. I’m more smuggling and Private Widdle 😉

TalkinPeece · 07/02/2019 20:42

Babooshka
I lived in Deal for a while as well and have family just north of Hythe
hence why I'm rather obsessed with clearance paperwork at Dover Docks

Gets worse. Piece on C4 tonight. Thanet DC is voting on cuts to budget. If they go through the port of Ramsgate will close. No ferries . No port.

Great example of joined-up working right there.

Or is this local government trolling central government, because if so it's kinda genius.

It's local government trying to get money out of central government:
Budget cuts decision in Thanet delayed for up to 10 days

"Before the vote was pulled, a Thanet District Council council spokeswoman confirmed that “discussions are ongoing” with the DfT but warned the cuts would have to go ahead if another funding plan does not materialise.

She said: “Thanet District Council is due to approve its proposed budget for 2019-20 at a full council meeting tonight.

“In order to meet its statutory obligations to deliver a balanced budget, the council has identified that savings of £730,000 will be required at the Port of Ramsgate.

“Discussions are continuing with the Department for Transport in respect of Ramsgate port to support Brexit resilience.

“Any new service out of the port would have to, as a minimum, generate the level of income required to balance the budget.

“Should arrangements not be finalised, the council will be required to make the cost savings identified.”"

Love Deal, love Hythe, in fact love most of East Kent - I think it is very underrated, apart from the Brexiteer fuckwits. What makes me laugh is that we have an absolutely minimal immigrant population (apart from the Ghurkas who everyone loves) yet the locals (I can say that, I'm a blower-in having only lived here 20 years) seem so entrenched in their views.

AutumnCrow · 07/02/2019 20:48

I can exactly why Thanet Council has done this.

PerverseConverse · 07/02/2019 20:56

Think I'll start looking on eBay for my summer wardrobe if clothing prices are going to increase too.

AutumnCrow · 07/02/2019 21:08

Sorry I pressed too soon.

I can see exactly why Thanet DC has done this. They might not have core social services and education responsibilities to pay for, as a district, but they do have significant other responsibilities to fund - whilst the government has slashed its budget and made sure it has very little means of raising income (as it has with all local government, of all political colours).

It'll be interesting to see how Unitaries with ports and areas of deprivation like Southampton and Portsmouth respond. (Spoiler: They're skint.) Unitaries do have core social care and tion responsibilities. They're expensive. And essential. SEN provision is already operating sub-legally.

AutumnCrow · 07/02/2019 21:09

education

GD12 · 07/02/2019 21:12

This is game over, 99% no deal.

TalkinPeece · 07/02/2019 21:15

Autumncrow
Ramsgate and Southampton are not really comparable.

Thanet is not a Unitary. Thanet owns the port
In Southampton, the port is owned by DP World (the UAE wealth fund)
but yes, Soton council is skint

ContinuityError · 07/02/2019 21:29

The Port of Portsmouth is owned by the Council, which is a unitary authority (and is probably skint as well).

PerverseConverse · 07/02/2019 21:31

Goodnight all. I hope none of us endure being awake in the small hours again or dream of brexit.

TalkinPeece · 07/02/2019 21:35

Continuity
Portsmouth Ferry port is indeed council owned
but its not a big freight port like Southampton.
And yes, Portsmouth is bust too

BiglyBadgers · 07/02/2019 21:35

I agree Autumn. I worked on euphemistically named "Transformation Projects" for a large local authority and I can absolutely see Thanet doing this. They are all pushed to the limit by the austerity cuts and they are going to be under even more pressure due to Brexit, especially if we drop out without a deal.

I suspect there is a whole lot of anger bubbling away in local government right now that is starting to show.

Interesting thought about Soton and Portsmouth. While Soton doesn't own the port they are responsible for areas around the ports which presumably could be impacted by customs issues. I also imagine that should the port be negatively affected by Brexit this will have an economic impact on the area in general due to job losses if businesses go under and such like. Just speculation, but things domino.

Southampton will probably be OK because its mainly an international container port - the China run.
And the Cruise ships are the other mega earner.

Westminster voting intention:

CON: 41% (+2)
LAB: 34% (-)

GRN: 4% (-)
UKIP: 4% (-2)

Apathy will get you in the end.

I'm fairly sure this is more about frustration from Labour supporters rather than more people liking the Cons than previously.

It's all about intention to vote.

Might try and look at the details of this to see if my gut feeling is right, but wow 7 % point difference. That's got to be the most for some time

Well, that's something to be cheerful about. Assuming we have a trade deal with China sorted out I guess.

DS has been awake since midnight so I'm pretty sure he's going to sleep tonight.

Is this an ominous sign of global economic strife?

China having workers unrest because of unpaid wages and cuts in hours to save money because the economy isn't doing too well.
