Westministenders: A Special Place in Hell

A quick start to a new thread (as I've not been paying attention this evening!).

May is looking to ditch the Malthouse Compromise. Cos its so rubbish.

The ERG look like they are splitting over it anyway.

Up to sixty Labour MPs could back the WA.

Half the ERG plus Labour Leave Rebels could be enough to get the WA over the line.

Donald Tusk, makes controversial comment by more or less stating the obvious.

but then he is also utterly convinced that Corbyn is a Tory mole

Give me the evidence that he's not.

The point is people are trying to make out that GV is some sort of white knight. I fact he is a top ten list of MEPs making money on the side. A list which includes Nigel Farage. Good company he keeps. Tony Blair is gutted that we're leaving the EU possibly because it would have been a nice cosy billet for him. I don't want to leave the EU but let's not pretend that the people who run it are saints.

You're right. He isn't a saint. He is, however, clearly a lot more capable than most of our current politicians in the UK and the fact he has a second career on the side is neither here nor there really. Plenty of our MPs also have other roles that pay plenty. Sure you could argue that a politician should not hold any other job while in position, but that's a whole different discussion isn't it and has very little bearing on whether or not he is doing a better job of acting like a bloody grown-up than our British leadership.

derxa · 07/02/2019 19:42

I literally said he was a troll. He trolls leavers. RTB I wasn't talking about any of your remarks. But that's a good description. I wouldn't dare attack any of your views. I would have 50 pitchforks stuck up my arse by other posters. Grin Anyway thanks for your great work on here

derxa · 07/02/2019 19:48

but that's a whole different discussion isn't it and has very little bearing on whether or not he is doing a better job of acting like a bloody grown-up than our British leadership. He is a skillful politician that is true.

Lonely...it says something when some I would have read ten years ago I would have been 😮 and I read your reasoned list and think 🤓. This well informed forum makes me realise that my remain unicorn has disappeared...😪

Given that the Bank of England has already downgraded this year's growth forecast from 1.7% to 1.2% (and growth in 2018 was also lower than anticipated at 1.4% Hmm), that pretty much balances out the 0.7% of our GDP that we sent to the EU in order to be part of its apparently worthless Single Market.

Bank forecasts worst year for UK since 2009
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-47155537

And that growth forecast assumes a "deal" Brexit Shock

In the Q&A after the MPC press conference, Carney estimated that growth has been damaged by c3% by Brexit Sad

.....and that's before factoring in all the costs of preparing for Brexit and the opportunity cost of all the things that the UK (both its government and its businesses) should be doing Angry

RedToothBrush · 07/02/2019 19:52

derxa, you may arise. Wink

I think Verhofstadt is best treated as a troll a lot of the time. He does say some stuff I agree with, but I do take him with a pinch of salt. He knows how to get a reaction - he's more similar to Farage than he'd like to admit at times. I think this is why Verhofstadt particularly amuses me when he takes aim at the same people who lionise Farage tbh.

I don't see the point in not being honest about this. It just undermines politics when you can't admit when your 'own side' is doing something or has made a mistake.

Verhofstadt can be a momumential arse.

I'm quite happy to dish out criticism of both 'Remain' and 'Leave' sides if it merits it. I have done so since before the ref.

NEW: Brussels chiefs have urged Theresa May to accept Jeremy Corbyn's Brexit compromise, despite the fact it has divided the Labour party.

Can I join the thread of news and despair?
I mostly lurk on the Brexit topics, but I'm very clued in to current updates and my brain is rapidly reaching crisis point at this stage.

I'm an artist, so basically zero income. Preparing to TTC, but not yet. We bought a house in September. DH had a guarantee of his contract extending which fell through. So he's trying to secure a new job here. If not, we'll have to move to wherever a job is. In that case, assuming we'll have to rent out the house, it won't sell in the current market round here (even though it's a solid FTB property, in excellent school catchment). We had to buy when we did because of mortgage rates. Of course, when we started house searching a year ago, there was some hope that a Brexit deal would be hashed out.

I'm less concerned about that though, we made our decision. Our area is sort of borderline, fairly nice but pockets of crime. We have a lot of deprived areas around us. I'm worried about the effect on those areas, the rise of poverty and crime. I've got a few chronic illnesses and my NHS care is bad as it is. Luckily I don't strictly need my medicines to live, but so many people do. People will die and... no one seems to care (in large enough numbers to make a difference anyway). I don't see how all the forecasts can be ignored. I think I'm just in disbelief, constantly. The government should be halting the process due to dire consequences we are facing. It's crazy.

Butterymuffin · 07/02/2019 20:09

the arch-pragmatist McDonnell, who is judging which route best secures a Labour government

This struck me from reading a few pages back. What is he making of the poll I've seen reported saying that Labour will lose 45 seats if they facilitate Brexit?

yolofish · 07/02/2019 20:17

oh dear, I have been stupid enough to start engaging with Brexiteers on my local village FB page. Bad bad bad decision - especially if I say we are coastal, wide open exposed beaches, close to Dover. I am going down in flames...

LonelyandTiredandLow · 07/02/2019 20:20

Uh-oh! yolo, abort, abort!

LittleSpace · 07/02/2019 20:20

I engaged with it once but there is just no reasoning. It is like a cult. You have my sympathy yolo.

LonelyandTiredandLow · 07/02/2019 20:21

There's little as small minded and catty as a village FB page, esp in a leaver area!

yolofish · 07/02/2019 20:28

too late! I just posted this:
yeah yeah yeah. Just to answer a few 'questions': did you know that most cancer drugs, and especially the short life radio active ones come in from Europe? Not great if someone you love needs them. Re food production: the UK produces about 50% of what we consume here - 75% of our fish is exported to the EU because Brits dont like fish that much. Big pharma companies will/are moving to the EU so they can continue to comply with EU regs - those regs which actually mean the drugs are tested, safe, blah.

But I will laugh out loud when you lot moan about the closure of the M20 because of the delays at the ports! Well, actually I probably wont because it will be bloody inconvenient, but that's the value of a blue passport I guess. Hope it's worth it (even though it will be made in France).
(no point putting actual data, they wont read it and keep posting shit anyway. STEP AWAY YOLO STEP AWAY!!)

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 07/02/2019 20:29

yolo sounds like you are in my neck of the woods!

Hazards · 07/02/2019 20:31

I'm surprised people still use SM I'm half way through Malware For Humans by James Patrick and it's concerning to say the least!

yolofish · 07/02/2019 20:32

oh dear I need to get a life apparently!! singing if I said smuggling/Dr Syn would that make sense?

TalkinPeece · 07/02/2019 20:33

Ah, the joys of East Kent ! I used to live in Buckland and get the train from Temple Ewell Grin

PerverseConverse · 07/02/2019 20:33

I gave up FB just before Christmas. Toxic pile of attention seeking crap. Life is better without it.

Hazards · 07/02/2019 20:34

Yolo...deal or no deal Grin and for once it's not brexit related.

LonelyandTiredandLow · 07/02/2019 20:36

I love it when leavers say get a life - it's because you've spent time researching those pesky fact, the ones that they haven't Grin
