Westminstenders: It's oh so quiet...

It's oh so quiet // It's oh so still // You're all alone // And so peaceful until

You ring the news // Bim bam // You shout and you yell // Hi ho ho // You broke the spell // Gee, this is swell you almost have a fit // Brexit is fab and I got hit // There's no mistake get on with it

'Til it's over and then // It's nice and quiet //
Shh shh // But soon again // Shh shh // Uh oh let's start a big riot

You blow a fuse // Zing boom // The devil cuts loose // Zing boom // What's the use
Wow bam // Of leaving the EU

It's gone quiet.

May was supposed to go on a tour of the EU to get concessions. She hasn't.

Instead we are currently stuck in an internal never ending debate about Alternative Arrangements (which is being abbreved too A. A. by less convinced souls) and how Germany got all the money from Marshall Aid (it didn't) and how navy ships can suddenly sprout front opening hulls to become roll on roll off ferries to emulate the spirit of Dunkirk. One of our greatest ever military defeats, which merely had good PR.

The idea that there is going to be any shift in position between now and 14th Feb seems unlikely. It suits the EU and it suits the ERG to be blunt about it. It does not suit the UK national interest though.

Instead our livihoods and futures are slowly drip, drip, dripping away. Invisible to those loved up on the idea of Leaving. But like a newly wed, how long does that feeling last? 42% of British marriages end in divorce after all. When do people fall out of love with Brexit?

The revelation of the need for the WAIB is scary too. The WAIB is the Withdrawal Agreement Implementation Bill. You can read more about it here:
threadreaderapp.com/thread/1091734003265224708.html
Well I say you can read about it, but from the thread you can see that the WAIB hasn't been published yet. And for us to Brexit without a legal and constitutional nightmare parliament needs to pass both the WA And the WAIB. And if you thought it was difficult to get the WA through just wait until you clap eyes on the WAIB details.

With this in mind there are noises from the ERG about an A50 extension. Y'know the one we can't have unless the EU think it's it their interests too.

More on the WAIB.

Of course there is a more sinister explanation: May does indeed intend to no deal and or use civil contingency law to pass the WAIB in whatever form she sees fit without parliamentary scrutiny.

Tick, tick, tick.

A friend told me today not to worry about brexit as "we survived before and we'll survive again". I didn't say much. My history lessons were rather grimmer in reminding me, that the ones who didn't survive don't get to be so optimistic.

I might get to keep up with this one! Smile

This. I am so sick of upper class ponces with silver spoons and money constantly telling us nothing is wrong as people die of poverty in one of "the richest countries in the world".

DGRossetti · 04/02/2019 16:42

It's amusing and worrying in equal measures how easy it is to misinterpret data for the best. Especially when you have an interest - unconscious or not - on it being true.

The recent woes of retail giants is a case in hand. One goes bust, the survivors remaining see an uptick in business, and the analyst-whores write puff pieces about "green shoots" etc etc, only to see the next one go a short time later.

I wish I can remember where I read it, but there was a wonderful history of cod fishing in Newfoundland that was written as a warning to the North Atlantic fishing fleets. Basically they overfished so badly that they forced younger cod to come up and giving the impression of massive stocks left ... this led (under pressure from the fishing industry) to quotas being abandoned as fishermen filled their boats. Right up till the extinction of cod in Newfoundland, with scientists currently still looking for a comeback.

Exactly.
Thank you to RedToothBrush

(Javid has been reprimanded by Bercow for speaking to media instead of the House about his new knife crime policy.............the legislature has been superseded by executive effectively now already)

Yes, like, but not yet a dictatorship. Rhubarb

exactly.

I can imagine the Cabinet sat in a circle in a church vestry at an Alternatives Anonymous meeting.

PMK and still hoping, but no longer sure what for.

Tonsilss · 04/02/2019 16:52

Does anyone know how much difference lorries coming into the UK not being checked could make to the issue of shortages?

PerverseConverse · 04/02/2019 16:54

Crocuses, snowdrops and one daffodil out here for the past 2 weeks. I keep feeling the hope of spring then brexit returns me to winter gloom.

DGRossetti · 04/02/2019 17:00

We saw some crocuses (crocii ?) last week, on a traffic island. Just poking up.

FishesaPlenty · 04/02/2019 17:20

If it was going to be a matter of lorries flowing freely, exactly as they do now, then there would be no shortages.

At this stage I'm not at all convinced that's what they mean though.

DangermousesSidekick · 04/02/2019 17:21

Lots of war poetry contrasts nature's beauty and the horrors of man-made war.
I'll just leave that here.

missclimpson · 04/02/2019 17:22

I think Richard North said that it would be the UK lorries trying to get out that would cause the logjam.

SquiddyMcSquidford · 04/02/2019 17:23

Great OP, RTB.

Mistigri · 04/02/2019 17:24

It won't be all lorries not being checked, it seems that they have to do some sort of electronic registration first. So I think this is another much ado about nothing. Still going to be very disruptive.

Also how are they going to tell which lorries can be waved through and which can't?

DGRossetti · 04/02/2019 17:26

At this stage I'm not at all convinced that's what they mean though.

Indeed. If nothing else we should know how weasel this government can be. For example this is the same government that assured us "not a penny" had been promised to Nissan when the announcement about production continuing in Sunderland was made. Now it emerges (with no media outlet holding the government to account) that promises were made. Although I'm struggling to see the motivation in the UK announcing it as a sort of "yah-boo" to Nissan over £61 million.

From where I'm sitting, the headline is that Nissan couldn't be persuaded to stay - even with a £61 million bung. Maybe Mays Magic Chequebook has run out ?

pointythings · 04/02/2019 17:28

Well, my colleague whose Dad voted Leave but didn't vote herself because she doesn't understand politics thinks No Deal will be OK after some minor inconvenience. Because her dad says so. So that's a relief then. Hmm

She's a trained nurse. With a degree. There really is no hope.

Long time lurker, long time remainer. I was also wondering about the apparent silence at the moment! Started my stockpiling today and will continue over the coming weeks. My DH is due to start his cancer treatment next week; I guess that should distract us from the clusterfuck on the horizon.

Destiel · 04/02/2019 17:54

Sorry to hear about your dh yolo x

Govt spends £800000 on lawyers as Eurotunnel is about to take them to court. twitter.com/phill_kemp/status/1092478550718984193?s=19

You'll like this (but not a lot, as someone used to be fond of saying):

From HMRC's newly published advice on customs arrangements:

HMRC has put in place transitional simplified procedures to make it easier for you to import goods from the EU using roll on roll off locations like Dover or the Channel Tunnel.

We’ll review them 3 to 6 months after they’re introduced on 29 March 2019.

If we decide to withdraw them we’ll give you a 12 month notice period. This will give you enough time to prepare your business to follow the import processes you’ll need for trading with the rest of the world.

If this happens, you may choose to:

use a third party (for example freight forwarder or customs broker) to complete declarations for you
become authorised to use customs freight simplified procedures
complete full declarations yourself

The actions set out in this guidance do not apply to importing or exporting goods between Northern Ireland-Ireland. We will write to you with information about this as soon as we can.

Sooooo helpful Hmm

AutumnCrow · 04/02/2019 18:03

yolo best of luck to you and your DH.

I have an MRI in early March but fuck knows what happens after that if I need more surgery.

Interestingly most of the (excellent) hospital staff I've seen so far are from eastern Europe / Baltic countries.
