Good things that might happen

We have lots of speculation about the bad consequences, and I do know some of it is quite likely and some are less likely. Some seem unavoidable too.

Are there any good things we can speculatively look forward to?
It just feels so scary right now, so hopefully somebody can give some of the positives that might happen and it can maybe be a silver lining on a very cloudy few months?

We do not have enough MEPs to change its direction of travel.

We have more than enough, but a significant number were originally elected on a UKIP ticket and have no intention of doing anything but wrecking the EU. Farage - on the fisheries committee and attends one meeting out of 42. How was that putting the case for British fishing ( which was sold out by Westminster anyway)?

Splitting of the Tories and Labour and reform of FPTP electoral system, with a bit of luck. I don't think the main parties have any coherence any more, society is not structured in the way it was when they were established.

The humiliation and re-education of little Britain types who idealise anything WWII-related without really understanding a single thing about history. The collapse of British exceptionalism. We're not destined for glory, we're a small island nation propped up by financial services and alliances with other, more powerful nations.

The politicisation of younger generations, who need to sit up and realise their parents and grandparents' interests are not identical to theirs.

I can see both Labour and the Tories only scrapping FPTP when they realise that they will never win a majority again. Furthermore when they realise that none of the other parties will go into Coalition with them, seeing what happened to the Lib Dems. The only Coalition I could see would be a genuine all party one. Not likely at the moment, but who knows.

I'm afraid their four freedoms are sacrosanct though. It's like a religious rule

I believe Germany got double the exception period for some new EU states to live and work there.

Of course we wont be able to go back to pre 1992 but i think a time limited exclusion on FOM perhaps restricted to certain trades or even a temp bloc (currently allowed) could be negotiated over, as could greater fishing rights and quotas.

Look at the alternatives - dis investment, uncheck lorries coming to the UK, a fractured nation (long term, the biggest danger) ..... and less access to criminal DB's - its hardly Sovereignty in action is it?

Now I think that Selmayr and co would prefer us to leave the EU project as we are a spanner in the works .

Right, I've thought about this. Here goes:

  1. We can point out that it is Not Our Fault and give the Tories a really good kicking.
  2. DH and I already get to make feeble jokes about 'When the balloon goes up', plus I am now a bit more of a 'forward planner' Wink, hopefully avoiding 'A bit of a cock-up on the old catering front'. Our trains are never on time. It's increasingly like living in an episode of Reginald Perrin, and I love Reggie Perrin.
  3. Maybe we can renationalise the railways and utilities and David Miliband. If Phil Collins has moved back to the UK, he might leave again.
  4. Did I mention about destroying the Tories?

United Ireland?

Housing prices will take a hit BUT huge job losses will go with it. Banks will see mortgages as a big risk so will raise the amount needed for a down payment which of course most people especially those without a job won't be able to come up with. Those who do have extra capital will scoop up the bargain real estate and play the long game. Huge amounts of people claiming benefits will stress the system to breaking point and it will give the conservative government the reason it's needed to make even deeper cuts which will effectively remove the social safety net. In order to broker deals with other countries the government will privatisation of services like the nhs. So if you're rich you stand to get richer.
