Following on from the fantastic thread of the weekend, I thought we'd continue discussing our brexit cupboards and boxes here. Here's to all the preppers and their cupboards, no matter what they contain. (Keep quiet about your stash in real life).

AutumnCrow - thank you for asking, only some people's harsh reaction so no, not really :-(

rainbowruthie · 28/01/2019 16:46

Chatted with a work colleague/friend this morning about a spot of 'forward planning' - heavens it was like wading through treacle - now wishing I hadn't bothered at all as she now knows that I have a 'Brexit Cupboard'

Hotterthanahotthing · 28/01/2019 16:46

I am also concerned that in an attempt to make us not notice empty shelves the Government is looking to ban high calorie food including hummus, guacamole garlic bread and focaccia.

Jens303 · 28/01/2019 16:47

yesimthistired - perhaps you'd like to explain your comment ?

MamaLovesMango · 28/01/2019 16:47

Yes, one DC’s birthday is on Brexit Day too Scandaloso. I’m trying to dissuade her from a party but without success so far. I think I’ll have to follow you Bellini and start getting the presents in soon. If I can’t throw her off the scent of a party, I’ll research war time tea parties. Do 7 year olds like meat paste?

yesimthistired · 28/01/2019 16:48

No, I wouldn't. Stop attention seeking and grow up.

Buteo · 28/01/2019 16:50

MilkTrayLimeBarrel I think most people's palates enjoy a wider variety of foods than the traditional meat 'n' two veg (generally boiled to death and seasoned only with salt) that I had day in day out whilst growing up because that was the only thing my parents would eat.

bellinisurge · 28/01/2019 16:57

Seriously @Jens303 , there is enough stress and aggro around this topic without adding to it.
Please, happy to advise and help.

Graphista · 28/01/2019 16:58

"We need Graphista's FAQs here."

Here it is.

1 why do you think it necessary? The U.K. Govt won't allow it all to go to hell in a handcart?

We are not as a country self sufficient. The govt has failed to organised increased production either by farmers or manufacturers and haven't even helped supermarkets arrange extra warehousing. At this point they are however starting to stockpile themselves and are refreshing training for police and armed forces in case of unrest.

2 But surely it won't affect uk products

many if not most uk products require ingredients/raw materials from outside the uk. Also, again as we're not self sufficient that means more people using U.K. Products who previously would have bought non uk alternatives. This means less uk made food to go around and probably higher prices.

3 stockpiling means you'll be responsible for empty shelves

no you'd be confusing stockpiling with panic buying. People buying and storing a little extra than they'd normally buy now means this frees up warehouse space for supermarkets and allows them to adjust their buying rates appropriately.

4 there was all this over the Millenium bug too and it was all hype

No - IT and telecoms people worked for YEARS in advance to prevent that issue from happening.

5 we managed before we were in the eu the population was much smaller, our productivity was higher per capita, and we still traded with Europe under established terms of the time.

6 we managed during WWII, people just pulled together

No there was at least a years planning by the government including rationing, plus crime rates soared and people did die from hunger/malnutrition related illness.

7 but if it proves unnecessary or govt finally pull their finger out won't you have wasted your money?

No. It will mean a reduced grocery bill for a while as I won't need to buy those long life products. Some better off mners have said they'll happily donate to food banks anything they're unlikely to use. Also if the "only" thing that happens is slight price rises perhaps due to £ falling initially then those of us on tight budgets won't be immediately in the shit!

8 well we all need to lose weight anyway we'll just diet

You still need nutrition for basic bodily functions & health. Obesity is more complex than simply "eat less", also children, the elderly and sick need calories and nutrition to grow and to stay healthy. And not everyone's fat! My dd is over 6' and barely more than a size 8 due to her disability she has a high metabolism. She needs the calories AND she needs to consume a certain amount of fat to protect her joints. Diabetics need a stable diet to manage their condition as do people with a variety of other conditions, some people need to take medication with certain types of foods, there's those with allergies to consider etc

Also hungry people get pissed off! Before they get to a point where they're too weak to fight they'll get angry! That's what will likely lead to the civil unrest. That and people fearful for loved ones who are diabetics etc.

9 grow stuff in the garden, we can grow stuff in this country too

March/April is a low harvest time. Google the "hungry gap" even if you were to plant stuff now it won't be ready for ages and even that only works

if you know what you're doing
can invest in the raw materials necessary
HAVE a garden or somewhere to grow stuff
The weather does what it's supposed to - no unusually warm or cold spells, or too much/too little rain!

Scandaloso · 28/01/2019 16:58

If I'm going to be eating from more limited options i'm depending on my well stocked spice cupboard to pimp everything up to the max.

Graphista · 28/01/2019 16:59

Response to last thread

I'll have a browse of Westminstenders where is it?

"Graphista , those are excellent FAQs. Apart from it being a bit annoying for you personally after your work, I wish the government would put them on the gov.uk website" I'd be fine with that - as long as they credit me!

"There is the mantra that we're only ever four meals away from anarchy. And remembering the riots of 2011, sometimes we don't even need that" I think this is especially true now we're in an era of instant gratification with about a generation & a half in this country who've NEVER experienced a widespread food shortage.

Falcon5 thank you for your honesty. That's the reality of these situations - money talks!

"Graphista loving your work on this thread come and check out Westministenders. It's not all serious. There's swearing, and pets" thank you, swearing right up my street! 😂 this feels a bit like being invited to an exclusive club.

"sure it may be uncomfortable at first" another "let them eat cake" type comment. It may be "uncomfortable" for those with money & resources to manage, for those ONLY JUST managing NOW it'll be health damaging!

"how on earth would the country have survived two world wars with attitudes like this" many didn't! And I don't mean soldiers or those bombed either. Why do you think clement Attlee and the introduction of the welfare state was so welcomed? My 4 grandparents ALL served in WWII if they were alive today they'd be prepping. They saw & experiences first hand how hard it was during & in the immediate aftermath of the war. They'd be pissed off at the politicians though! Churchill, chamberlain & Attlee would NEVER have let things get this late on with no real plans to ensure the health hell the survival of the population!

"I thought men and women who died during the war wanted peace in Europe?" Exactly! Something many seem to have forgotten is that mutually beneficial trade agreements mean it's in the various countries best interests to also maintain peace.

"And after WW2 the country was on the brink of bankruptcy and then starvation. We only survived thanks to a huge loan from the US." This too!

Hawkinspace - not an uninformed jibe, an opinion formed by looking at their info including on their own website. They're primarily backed by a property developer and I'm not seeing in their policies true concern or understanding of the working classes or poorer people. Their team is largely wealthy people from backgrounds in wealthy industries like finance & insurance. So they're not the party for me.

"I'm ex-Labour" which era of labour?

"Will they still be issuing visas to British citizens?" More basic than that will they still be letting U.K. Planes in their air space?!

"Hooray, another one! @user1467052019 sounds like a pledge not to prepare and a pledge to come back on to admit they were wrong as well." I'll second that - though I notice frequently on these threads posters who make a "bingo" comment when it's refuted/argued against they rarely return to defend their position.

We'll see a sea of name changes on here I reckon post 29th March! Probably on threads something like "we couldn't afford to thought we knew better than to stockpile and now we're running very low on food - help!"

"I see the world trade being our oyster, and my country being Great again." And what are your qualifications & experience in asserting this?

Having a backbone and being prepared for possible eventualities aren't mutually exclusive. But equally being brave doesn't magically mean food is available.

"mine is in land and bricks and mortar." The value of which is affected by the countries economy. Are you not old enough to remember the early 90's housing price crash?

"Don’t give a shit if it is EEC or EU I’ll be very happy not been part of it" which just proves you lack even basic understanding of the situation

"it cuts all ties to anything with them totally" exactly - leaving us with NO trade deals with either suppliers OR buyers! We can't buy OR sell! Do you have any idea how long it takes to negotiate large scale trade deals?

You think EXPERIENCED industry & farming EXPERTS are scaremongers? That people who's job it is to manage customs issues at ports, manage the buying and storage for supermarkets, organise the logistics of freight are scaremongers? That the armed forces, police and civil servants who's job it is to maintain civil order are scaremongers?

Jesus! "We won’t die from eating some more basic things if need be"

There are NOT ENOUGH of the basic things to feed everyone in the country - to the tune of the equivalent of 27 MILLION people being unfed - at all!

The armed forces are stockpiling EXTRA resources - including ammo ffs - JUST for brexit!

Hitting news cycle now:

www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-47028748

(I know elements already posted but seeing certain posters seem to have difficulties with reading!)

I suspect maryjoyce is a little older than me (46) old enough their children if they have them are independent adults, young enough to not yet have serious health issues that tend to come with ageing, working & earning enough that price hikes in food won't be a serious problem for them.

"We do not have that much clout. We aren't this incredibly rich nation producing goods that everybody else wants."
Exactly - or with colonies that have goods to sell we can profit from!

Ffs "we can eat seasonally"

THERE IS NOT ENOUGH FOOD TO FEED THE UK POPULATION PRODUCED IN THE UK!

Even IF everyone went back to ONLY eating uk food - which by the way we haven't done for 1000's of years! - there is nowhere near enough ESPECIALLY at a time of year when crops aren't ready to be harvested!

"As to Tesco and co knowing any more than you or me makes me laugh as they know as much or as little as us right now." Bollocks! It's their JOB to know! They know how much of what items they sell to the unit! They know how that breaks down in terms of food groups. They know how much storage space they have, how long perishable goods can be stored safely for...

Do you REALLY think a privileged woman (TM) who's NEVER done a real job or cared for a child or elderly person themselves has the first clue about this?!

Or an ex army officer (brexit sec) of only 5 MONTHS who then went into law/finance and who I also suspect has never been responsible for his household finances in any real way does?

Or an ex company director (Hammond) with a PERSONAL wealth of £9 MILLION?

I bloody don't!!! I wouldn't trust them to do my weekly shop!

"Has any one considered the basic fact that a lot of our GPS are not allowed to issue extra supplies of prescribed drugs, on the grounds that they are potentially putting increased drug amounts, into their patients lives.
For most of us on them, we would genuinely stockpile, but there will always be some who would use the extra supplies either to overdose on or to possibly sell." Some of us on here have discussed this at length. Unfortunately we're not getting answers from gp's or pharmacists on this. Presumably because THEY'RE not being given answers either! Which is utterly bloody shameful!

"Still unsure where in the thread it mentions that our farming & fishing will stop" it doesn't need to! At the CURRENT LEVELS our farms and fishers don't produce/gather enough to feed our full population - even IF we're not selling it, even IF the British people start eating stuff that culturally we don't prefer that's normally sold elsewhere. It's NOT ENOUGH. In addition they won't be able to get the necessary materials and equipment to KEEP farming and fishing. I've friends and family who are farmers and fishers and they've been sticking up on fertiliser, pesticides, machinery parts etc since art 50 was triggered where they can (they've tried petitioning the govt for extra funds to help this and been largely ignored!)

@milktraylimebarrel

"what is wrong with the 60s diet? Meat, potatoes and vegetables forms my daily diet now - I dislike Chinese, Indian, Mexican, pasta or any other spicy food." Nobody's saying there's anything wrong with the components necessarily but that there will be LESS of them, and as we're not used to eating that way it will have a psychological and possibly physical effect on many. I ate like this growing up and had almost permanent stomach problems - constipation, trapped wind, diarrhoea, heartburn, reflux. I've since discovered this is likely due to an intolerance to red meat. Discovered by accident due to going veggie for ethical reasons and having incidents of accidentally being given red meat or red meat byproducts and ending up hospitalised. We don't eat much potato in this house, my dd isn't keen and I recently discovered this may be connected to her disability. So if pasta/noodles/rice/cous cous are impossible to get that leaves her with just bread for carbs which if she has too much makes her ill too. Again probably related to her condition. I've a relative who's diabetic who's found over YEARS of trial and error that bread & potatoes fucks her blood sugars up so she doesn't have them usually either.

"I can't think of any winter fruits." Mainly apples and pears.

"Interesting graphic from BBC" can u just point out that as you go doe that graphic the places are further away from us? Generally.

"I'd be worrying about the millions of furious people who all thought "It'll be FIIIIIINEE, we'll simply switch to only locally-grown produce..." demanding an abundant selection at my farm gate. In March." Where do you think the army will be deployed first? It'll be to farms & warehouses to prevent looting.

During WWII that was one of the reasons fighting fit farmers were exempt from conscription, not just as they were fit to farm but also fit to protect them! And even so fields were raided.

bellinisurge · 28/01/2019 17:01

@Graphista , your wise words are appreciated

Jens303 · 28/01/2019 17:01

yesimthistired - no i'll bet you wouldn't, perhaps be brave enough to stand by your insults if your happy to hurl them

cloudtree · 28/01/2019 17:07

Glad to see we're also in 1984 territory MNHQ Hmm. No food and no free speech. I'm not sure why a comment where I explained that I wasn't calling the GF a fuckwit was deleted Confused

Hey ho.

Screamish · 28/01/2019 17:09

Jens, you've made it clear you don't agree with the idea of some people having some back up supplies in case of problems due to the UK crashing out without a deal. That's fine, totally up to you!
You are clearly unhappy with this thread and the posters on here, why keep coming back? Genuinely, maybe it's just not the thread for you? It's just turning into an embarrassing slanging match in between the useful posts

bellinisurge · 28/01/2019 17:09

@Jens303 , can I help? I'm a general prepper and I give advice a lot on here. You don't have to be a prepper to prep for Brexit.

Graphista · 28/01/2019 17:11

Ugh really cloudtree? Jens if you haven't the stomach for robust debate - which can include your views being challenged perhaps you'd be better off discussing on gentler areas of mn?

Jens303 · 28/01/2019 17:15

Graphista - thank you for answering my question & the FAQ's are brilliant

Screamish - at no point have I said I don't agree, perhaps you can point that out?

I am actually quite concerned that prescription medicine's I take on a daily basis will be affected but am unable to stockpile due to being refused them if I re-order before I need to

bellinisurge - thank you, pretty sure you can :-)

All I said was I can't believe that it would be that bad & got an instant barrage of personal unnecessary insults

Jens303 · 28/01/2019 17:16

Graphista - what debate? who actually asked me anything?

RangeRider · 28/01/2019 17:17

Any chance we could get back to cupboard suggestions? There's only 2 months to Armageddon and I nearly forgot stock cubes....

StoorieHoose · 28/01/2019 17:18

I remembered the stock cubes last seen. I’ve added Bisto Best this week - everything is better with gravy mmmmmm

Scandaloso · 28/01/2019 17:18

Vacum packed gnocchi is one I thought of today. They have a shelf life of about 2 or 3 months. For days when you need some stodge!

ClanoftheCaveBear · 28/01/2019 17:19

For kids parties could you freeze a load of cheese and do HM pizza? I would forward purchase flour/ yeast/ tomato and crisps/ party rings, sweets.
