Following on from the fantastic thread of the weekend, I thought we'd continue discussing our brexit cupboards and boxes here. Here's to all the preppers and their cupboards, no matter what they contain. (Keep quiet about your stash in real life).

Wild do you use nutritional yeast? Slightly cheesy taste and high in vitamins, good to store - won't be any use for pizza toppings etc but may be useful otherwise?

You can make dairy free cheese sauce by making a normal white sauce using vegan margarine, corn flour and soya milk. Then add nutritional yeast, bouillon and black pepper for taste. It makes a good lasagne topping.

@MadauntofA not heard of that will take a look. It's not the flavour I'm worried about, it's our main source of calcium due to dairy and soya allergy. I have stocked up on calcium vitamins as well as multivitamins just in case but if we can't get milk or cheese I do worry that we won't get enough from veg. I know kale is very high in calcium but I worry whether it will be enough. I have oa and calcium is important and the kids are very young so they also can't afford a deficit in calcium.

Nipped into Morrisons. Shelves looking short of pasta and toilet rolls today.

Heinz beans are on a decent offer - 8 tins for £3. Cheese was long dated up to end of May and is one of the items predicted to have significant price rises.

At the minute, I'm just managing to replace items as we use them really, rather than add any extras. Will be slightly easier to restock when the kids are back in school.

BlackeyedGruesome · 19/02/2019 16:46

Almonds are high in calcium if you are not allergic to nuts as well. Bloody expensive as well though.

Mistigri · 19/02/2019 17:03

Wildchild just get calcium tablets if you are concerned (ones without added vitamin D if you are also taking a vitamin supplement). Most vegetable sources of calcium don't really contain that much - a child would have to eat about 12 oz of almonds to get the recommended daily amount. Calcium supplements taken with a multivit would be much easier ...

Don't forget to set up part 3 soon. This is one of my favourite threads on MN atm. I'm sure it will only get busier in the next few weeks.

Hard cheese can be frozen, grate the cheese into ziplock bags and lay the bag(s) flat to freeze. Then you can take small or large amounts.

I don’t know if soft cheeses can freeze well or not 🤷‍♀️

Bluelonerose · 19/02/2019 20:11

I've done a big shop today. Forgot dried milk though. I think I'm almost there with food supplies. Just a few more tinned tomatoes, rice and chocolate.

Can anyone help me stockpile malteasers coz it's impossible Grin

I'm rather lacking on the shampoo etc front. But I'm off to a pound shop next week so I'll stock up then.

Oh and cat treats. Little buggers managed to get into their box and eat 5 packets last night.

redhat · 19/02/2019 20:23

hard cheese freezes in blocks too but goes a bit crumbly. goats cheese, blue cheese, feta, halloumi all freeze perfectly well. So does butter.

bluechameleon · 19/02/2019 23:08

I've heard that mozzarella freezers fine if you put it in the freezer in its little bag. I have one in there but haven't tried defrosting it yet.
Our first foray into bread making wasn't too successful - 4 year old had lots of fun making flatbread but took a tiny bite and declared he didn't like it. I think I'm going to have to freeze wraps for him. The rest of us can have home made!
I had to break into the stash today because I'd run out of sweetcorn in the normal cupboard. It's looking fairly good though. I need to try to work out how many days of 3 meals and snacks it could actually do.

redhat · 19/02/2019 23:22

Yes mozzarella freezes well. I cut it into small chunks to throw onto pizzas

NoWordForFluffy · 20/02/2019 06:26

I'm going to buy a couple more big blocks of cheese, I think, plus some butter, to add to the freezer stock.

I've got a shop coming tonight and then one on pay day early next month and I'm done, I think. Apart from more loo roll which I'll get in Aldi and the aforementioned cheese and butter.

SparklySneakers · 20/02/2019 11:42

I've just done a stock take and have more than I thought so quite pleased. Still need batteries and more shampoo and shower stuff for the children

Wolfcub · 20/02/2019 16:38

Stocked up on shampoo, conditioner and face cream today. More shampoo coming in my brexit ocado shop next week but it gets washed every day, is thick as anything and ds frequently nicks my shampoo despite having his own

redhat · 20/02/2019 16:42

I did hair stuff today too. Bulk order from amazon so it makes life easy.

Lucked out in B&M too. 6 large cans of batiste dry shampoo reduced to 50p each because they didn't have any lids.
