The European Medical Agency left their London offices today to relocate to Amsterdam.
900 jobs. Lost our leading role in evaluating medicines.

No clear pathway forward.

What they should of written on that bus

Step forward into chaos, we have no idea and we're just telling you what you want to hear: Vote Leave.

larry nice one, especially the bit about selfish hoarders only saving up truffles and avocados.

larrygrylls · 27/01/2019 11:34

Hard to hoard an avocado!

But maybe some canned mangoes and, of course, foie gras😀.

Nice one not addressing any of the substantive points, though.

LonelyandTiredandLow · 27/01/2019 11:40

larry the army, it seems disagrees with you. They are foreward purchasing to the tune of over £23mil but carry on burying your head in the samd

TheElementsSong · 27/01/2019 11:41

I’m curious why we’re talking about prepping (oh, sorry, selfish hoarding) on an EMA thread. But yes, I literally have nothing to address your immaculate points. This is because I’m a Remainer.

But meanwhile, as I lack wisdom and understanding, can I inquire:

If selfish elite hoarders were only collecting luxuries, then your laws of supply and demand would mean that it’s luxuries would go up in price and not, as you say, the essentials that proper people need - and anyway we’re not going to starve, right (this being the new Sunlit Uplands, to any who are trying to keep up with the shifting Brexit benefits)?

That being the baseline above which nobody ought to complain or even discuss, logically then nobody ought to complain about increasing prices of poncy luxuries Camembert or porcini.

Also I look forward to condemnation of the unpatriotic, environmentally unfriendly, price-increasing, armed forces who are apparently stockpiling too (and presumably they’re not cornering the market on truffles). See also actual supermarkets and pharmaceutical suppliers being advised to stockpile. All very very naughty and unpatriotic. Gosh, I wonder why they’re having to do that? 🤔

7Days · 27/01/2019 11:47

It's surely more selfish sitting back and expecting someone to save you in the event of shortages. If you can, do. And get out of the way when people worse off need help.

I'm looking at this from across the Irish Sea and am totally shocked at what is going on.

AwdBovril · 27/01/2019 12:03

I have shelves full of tinned caviar & truffles. No bog roll though. Thought I'd leave that for the plebs.

TheElementsSong · 27/01/2019 12:26

It works a bit like this:

If you buy extra stuff because it's on offer and you're a thrifty person who is generally careful with money, no problem.

If you buy extra stuff because there might be bad weather coming and you've been snowed in before, no problem.

If you buy extra stuff because you're an old-fashioned organised sort who likes a well-stocked pantry and like menu-planning and batch-cooking, no problem.

If you buy extra stuff because you're concerned about supply chain disruption in the wake of a No Deal crash-out Brexit, you are a selfish posh hoarder of luxuries who will cause prices of non-luxuries to rise and who hates the environment and YOUR NEGATIVE THINKING WILL MAKE A BREXIT FAIRY DIE!!!!

AwdBovril · 27/01/2019 12:56

I've realised I'm an automatic prepper anyway. My grandmother was (lived in London during the war), I am because I'm disabled, poor & we don't have a car. Can't rely on being able to nip out for a few groceries. It's helped us before, more than once.

Theworldisfullofgs · 27/01/2019 13:17

Now back to the point...

So is Airbus prepping selfish or just good business management?

OP posts:
larrygrylls · 27/01/2019 13:35

A bit of both.

It is interesting, though, that powerful corporations portray themselves of victims of circumstance and yet deny that they have any role in the circumstances they find themselves in.

Let us be honest. If people’s living standards had been rising in a meaningful way across the country, Brexit would not be happening.

And now that it is, the elite are gnashing their teeth at being victims of the stupid proletariat who are only shooting themselves in the foot.

And when Brexit leads to a Euro collapse (as the IMF has warned it might) and Italexit (along with Grexit and Spexit), Singapore or New York will be the new Headquarters of large footloose global corporations.

The Guardian;
The European Medicines Agency, one of the biggest EU regulators and one of the first casualties of Brexit, has closed its doors in the UK for the last time with the loss of 900 jobs

www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/jan/26/european-medicines-agency-closes-london-office-with-loss-of-900-jobs-brexit

A quick google reveals that the European Medicines Agency estimate the job loss figure to be nearer 100;
www.politico.eu/article/emas-free-holidays-to-amsterdam-help-sway-staff-move/

The EMA's Annual Report 2017 states that 60 members of staff (6.61%) are UK nationals (848 non UK) - some/many of whom may be relocating to Amsterdam anyway.

A further 600 members of staff and 470 children are expected to make the move over the coming year, the paper said. The Parool bases its claim on a city council report. Amsterdam has set up a special project team to help EMA workers relocate, find somewhere to live and suitable schooling for their children. The city is spending €1m on the project, the health ministry a further €2.5m, the paper said
www.dutchnews.nl/news/2018/12/schooling-key-as-ema-workers-opt-for-the-hague-noord-holland/

A big upheaval for the families certainly, but The Guardian are misreporting the job losses and most jobs at the EMA seem to be temporary contracts; The Agency has no permanent officials, but is staffed mainly by temporary and contract agents recruited through open selection procedures

Theworldisfullofgs · 27/01/2019 13:41

So Rees Mogg and the move to Dublin? Prudent planning or selfishness?

And EMA jobs are just part of the issue. Lost opportunities are the biggest point. And reputation.

Indeed, but The Guardian chose to go with this headline;
Key EU medicines regulator closes London office with loss of 900 jobs

TheElementsSong · 27/01/2019 13:55

What are you complaining about, OP?? We've only lost a finger instead of the whole hand. Let's have a sense of proportion, please. There are far more pressing concerns, like posh selfish people destroying the environment by only buying extra luxuries and simultaneously driving up prices of essentials which they are not buying because they're posh Grin

TheElements,

There are so many bright passionate remainers on this thread who can see all the short term dangers of Brexit and, yet, they fail to put it into any historical context and are entirely blind to anything but their own interests.

Nasim Taleb was so perspicacious with his concept of IYIs and they are here aplenty!

I would like us to remain now for selfish and short term reasons but I can see both sides of the argument and am also aware that predicting the consequences to the economy of an event is almost impossible (the all-important ERM, Thatcher’s first tax raising budget in the teeth of a recession, Russia’s defaulting on Rouble debt, etc etc etc).

TheElementsSong · 27/01/2019 14:17

Confused Why is that post directed little old me who can't even address substantive points about posh hoarding of caviar?

borntobequiet · 27/01/2019 14:27

To be fair, I saw on another thread a poster saying that the only tinned meat that appealed to them was pâté.
Gnashing of teeth is a familiar but puzzling phrase. What does it actually mean? ( I always see Dennis the Menace’s dog in my mind’s eye when I read it.)

TheElementsSong · 27/01/2019 14:49

I saw that born Grin although I do agree with that poster in the sense that IME most tinned meat is kind of gross. Weirdly, most tinned fish is nice. Why is that?

Slightly back to topic, why is Brexit still being framed (misdirected) as out-of-touch-posh-elite-selfish-Remainers vs real-actual-people-proper-oppressed-struggling-Leavers? It never was true.

borntobequiet · 27/01/2019 15:04

Oh yes, I quoted the pate as a joke (I think it was a joke originally)!
I don’t do emoticons though (and will continue to resist them) so people think I’m deadly serious...I find them too confusing...does this merit a grin, a smile or that wry confused one? Or all three? Should it be wine or gin? What does glitterball mean? I really don’t like having to make choices...
As to the truth of things, that died a death two years ago, if not before [emoticon as appropriate]

TheElementsSong · 27/01/2019 15:19

Holy shit, there's a glitterball emoji? What on earth does it mean?

borntobequiet · 27/01/2019 15:29
Glitterball Dazzled by inconsequentialities?
larrygrylls · 27/01/2019 15:59

TheElements (and anyone else who cares to answer).

If you don’t believe Brexit was a massive protest vote from those who have not shared the fruits of the last 20-30 years productivity growth, what was it?

It is just way too simplistic to argue that it was the ‘the Battle bus (with its lies) wot won it’.

And if you don’t understand where your opponents are coming from and simply believe them to be thick and/or ill educated, then you cannot say (as you have above) that it was never about the elite vs the proletariat,

bellinisurge · 27/01/2019 16:04

Not my opponents. My fellow citizens. Who will bloody well cry for help even more loudly if we go no Deal. It's an act of economic suicide.

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 27/01/2019 16:19

What's the EMA? What does it do, how much does it cost and why does our leaving the EU mean they can't work out of a London office?
