Brexit

What the actual fuck is wrong with Corbyn?

He is less useful than a chocolate teapot anyway, but for a man who blusters on so much about "listening to the members" and "making policy based on the members" he's certainly got an odd way of showing it.

I just find it extraordinary that such a shambolic, self-interested and, frankly corrupt, government has been enabled to get away with it because the opposition is so extraordinarily ineffectual.

Supporting a people's vote would be political suicide for Labour, they would lose thousands of lifelong Labour voters if they did.

What do you suggest he does?

Moussemoose · 02/01/2019 19:50

More Labour voters voted remain than leave. The majority of Labour members support a People's Vote.

He will lose support if he backs Brexit.

Bombardier25966 · 02/01/2019 19:56

@Moussemoose 60% of Labour constituencies voted leave, and that's what matters when it comes to election time.

I'm strongly for remaining in the EU, but am realistic about what the opposition can do in the current situation.

Biscuitsneeded · 02/01/2019 20:00

But if he just pushed for a people's vote those constituencies would still have their voice. They could again vote to leave (on whatever terms could be negotiated, OR on a no-deal basis) or individuals could change their mind. People don't seem to understand that a people's vote doesn't necessarily ignore the first referendum result. It just checks whether it is actually still what the majority want.

Meanwhile, let's not forget the army of sock puppets recruited by the Tories to set up social media accounts simply to discredit Jeremy Corbyn.

Moussemoose · 02/01/2019 20:05

Constituencies or voters?

Labour constituencies may have voted labour but more labour voters voted remain.

HarrisIsGoingOut · 02/01/2019 20:07

I'm actually a longtime mnetter, although I namechange regularly.

Some interesting stats about labour members and labour voters and a second referendum in this article:

This may be true, though Jeremy Corbyn supporters often sound just like Tory sock puppets anyway (you don't seem to need to pay them to do it).

SusanWalker · 02/01/2019 20:34

I don't think you need sock puppets to discredit JC, he manages that all by himself. And I say that as a Labour party member and voter, voted Labour at the last election and feel very let down by his lack of leadership.

Biscuitsneeded · 02/01/2019 20:38

SusanWalker I completely agree. Have voted Labour all my life apart form during Iraq war, and have a fab Labour MP, but if there was an election tomorrow have no idea what I would do.

SusanWalker · 02/01/2019 20:50

It's not because he's left wing, I actually like some of his policies although I am not quite as left wing as him.

It's because he's hopeless at PMQs - how can you go up against May who never answers a question properly and reverts to soundbites and not trounce her?

You barely ever see him. It's like he's invisible. When you do see him he comes across as bored and fed up. I actually prefer McDonnell out of the left wing faction, at least when he's interviewed he shows some passion and some drive.

And I think he's disingenuous on brexit, although he's not the only one admittedly.

thecatfromjapan · 02/01/2019 20:52

It's crap.

The rabid Corbyn supporters of Twitter are like a bunch of gaslighting troll sock puppets - at the moment they're spreading the word that 5 in every 6 Labour members either support 'Leave' or wouldn't leave the Labour Party over the issue.

Honestly, they are doing the work of anti-Corbyn sock puppets for them.

It's infuriating.

Real polls suggest Labour Leave voting areas wouldn't switch to Con or UKIP if Labour supported Remain (or a PV).

Most Labour voters voted Remain.

Most Labour members want a PV or Remain.

The situation is crazy.

I'm a furious Labour Party member.

thecatfromjapan · 02/01/2019 20:53

Honestly, Biscuits and Susan, we need a support group of some kind.

SusanWalker · 02/01/2019 20:59

I refuse to rescind my membership though. I want the right to vote for someone else in the next leadership contest. I don't think leaving the party to the Corbynites is good for the party or the country.

thecatfromjapan · 02/01/2019 21:00

Me too, Susan.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 02/01/2019 21:05

Jeremy Corbyn has been absolutely consistent in his beliefs and values. I have many older (and traditional Labour supporter) friends who share his views and who voted Brexit. I'm surprised you're surprised, tbh.

bellinisurge · 02/01/2019 21:08

He's shit.

Moussemoose · 02/01/2019 21:08

Corbyn has been consistent but not exactly open and honest.

Many on the left believe that Brexit will bring about social unrest that will lead to a radical change. Voters realising how shit everything is and turning to the left for a new beginnings.

Unfortunately, history shows us some people move leftwards and others move to the right. We then have huge rifts and divisions and potentially violence.

In this crucible the left hopes to forge political change.

Ivegotthree · 02/01/2019 21:09

He's appalling. The stories are lucky to have him, given how crap a time they're having and yet he STILL looks shit.

jasjas1973 · 02/01/2019 21:10

Wasn't there two polls that indicated Labour would gain 1.5m votes of they went harcore Remain but JC wants brexit :(

Ype agree, SusanW, against the likes of May etc a competent politician would score heavily but time and time again it just looks like he wishes he was back in his garden.

Labour have some vote winning policies but if they want to win a GE, they need a new leader with some radical ideas, they are currently 56 seats behind the Cons.

thecatfromjapan · 02/01/2019 21:12

The thing is, I like milk chocolate, I hate plain chocolate; I don't like music in pubs; I'm not sure I approve of people being allowed to ride horses.

However, were I to be the leader of a political party, particularly were my leadership to be premised on 'listening to members', I'm not convinced I would permit my personal beliefs to trump the wishes of the majority of my party - especislly if they might prove an impediment to the pragmatic of electability.

Yes, I get he's a cranky contrarian, with anti-western viewpoints, untouched by the sunlight of of post-70s politics, and that makes many old Stalinists feel as frisky and at the heart of things as having necked a whole load of Biafra, but I would expect him to be listening to some voices of reason - rather than ploughing in in a manner that is going to wreck the Party -and possibly the UK.

Twillow · 02/01/2019 21:13

I don't get the hysteria against Corbyn, to me he comes across as refreshingly honest and open (and a great improvement on Blairism which was all but Tory in name). It needs tobe remembered that what we think of as far left in this country is still hugely moderate compared to the left wing in many parts of the world, which is what he seems to be unfairly compared to by the gutter press.

thecatfromjapan · 02/01/2019 21:16

Viagra , not Biafra.

I'm so irked about this. So many of my relatives are unreconstructed Stalinists (yes, they really are) and they are thrilled with Corbyn. It's like a historical re-enactment of the politics of their youth. They know all the words.

But I find the idea of what Brexit is going to do terrifying.

Mistigri · 02/01/2019 21:17

I don't think people are objecting to Corbyn being left wing. They're objecting to him being utterly useless at his job.
