Since when does Russia care about democracy?

I personally think he is a dangerous bully. Il stop there.
However one thing he has is presence. Rightly or wrongly. He makes the UK government look like pathetic weak ameba.

PerkingFaintly · 20/12/2018 16:28

Il stop there.

No, it's OK, you can go on.

I'm interested in why "looking strong" or "having presence" is more important than running the country well.

Craft1905 · 20/12/2018 16:29

However one thing he has is presence.

So did Hitler, Stalin, Pol Pot, Mussolini and many others.

You say presence, I say personality cult.

Russiawithlove · 20/12/2018 16:30

Omg is the UK being run well?....

lubeybooby · 20/12/2018 16:31

because it benefits him in several ways, the same reason he was all for Trump

knowing Trump would divide and weaken America

knowing Brexit will (and has already even though it hasn't happened) divide and weaken the UK

PerkingFaintly · 20/12/2018 16:31

Or maybe the premier annexing neighbouring countries and having his political enemies murdered is "running the country well" for some people.

Although that doesn't tend to go well for the ordinary citizens.

PerkingFaintly · 20/12/2018 16:33

I'm asking you about Putin, which is what the OP is about.

Russiawithlove · 20/12/2018 16:35

Well I tell you what il go back to Russia you stay here and keep moaning about Brexit.
Let's meet next year and see how we both doing.

SisterOfDonFrancisco · 20/12/2018 16:37

Look at what Putin is doing to Ukraine at the moment and it will be clear how a divided Europe is beneficial to him.

RandomObject · 20/12/2018 16:41

I'm no Brexit fan but I definitely prefer it to the human rights abuses in Russia...

PerkingFaintly · 20/12/2018 16:42

Well, you have just described him as a dangerous bully. I'd be interested to know what makes you say that.

UserX · 20/12/2018 16:43

How do Leavers feel about the possible benefits of Brexit to Russia?

OP posts:
Satsumaeater · 20/12/2018 16:51

Why cannot people comprehend we are not a big player anymore

Why can't Putin comprehend it's not 1989 anymore.

You can't justify the invasion of Ukraine or shooting down a civilian aircraft!

Anyway if the UK isn't a big player anymore we're not a laughing stock either because nobody is remotely interested in us! You can't have it both ways.

why100000 · 20/12/2018 16:58

Look at what Putin is doing to Ukraine at the moment and it will be clear how a divided Europe is beneficial to him.

^ this.

And we may be pathetic and amoeba like and no one is interested in us and so badly run blah blah, but without a shadow of a doubt Brexit does weaken the EU and contributes to the changing world order. In a way which Putin, Trump and others see to be to their advantage.

Ta1kinpeace · 20/12/2018 17:08

Putin needs an external enemy.
Getting Trump elected was a master stroke as it weakens the USA
Supporting Brexit has hamstrung the EU for the last three years
which works in his favour of trying to undermine democracy.
Supporting Assad keeps the Middle East destabilised.
Supporting MBS keeps the gulf destabilised

Its all about making Russia look stronger by comparison
because in reality its a declining nation in terms of economy, population and natural resources.

Helmetbymidnight · 20/12/2018 17:37

You’re not defending your heritage, russia.
You’re defending putin and pretending he had nothing to do with the poisoning and that he isn’t pro-Brexit.
When people pick you up on it, you pretend they are attacking your nationality. Confused

As for omg is the U.K. being run well? Er no, no one is arguing it is.

Patroclus · 20/12/2018 17:41

Brexit is bad for britain and bad for the EU, therefore its good for Russia in Putin's mind. Remember his reaction to Ukraine talking about joining the EU?

Russiawithlove · 20/12/2018 17:44

News Update..apparently Russia is now responsible for the drone crisis at Gatwick.
I feel I cannot defend myself anymore...if in doubt blame Russia

scaryteacher · 20/12/2018 17:45

Removal of the most significant military force from the EU will make it much easier to assert territorial control over countries near Russian borders. Umm, nope, because the EU doesn't do anything militarily there, it's all NATO, and we are still and will remain fully paid up members of the Alliance.

Patroclus · 20/12/2018 17:46

Its also insane how many people think Russia is still a communist country.

Ta1kinpeace · 20/12/2018 17:49

Russiawithlove
I feel I cannot defend myself anymore
Unless you are being paid by Putin, why does it bother you so much that we are pointing out his regular acts of destabilisation around the world ?

Helmetbymidnight · 20/12/2018 17:50

Brexit means less of a powerful, unified and immediate response. Eg putting sanctions in place.

I don’t know why anyone would dispute this.

Helmetbymidnight · 20/12/2018 17:56

How do Leavers feel about the possible benefits of Brexit to Russia

I think they just feel it’s an unfortunate coincidence that putin, trump, isis, Tommy Robinson and UKIP are all pro-Brexit.

bellinisurge · 20/12/2018 17:57

Of course the Russian people are not the enemy @Russiawithlove . I used to live and work there.
However, it is in Putin's interest to destabilise the EU. And nibbling at us serves that purpose. The EU is far more focused on that than, say Ukraine. He wants to demonstrate that the EU is not such an attractive prospect. He had the EU on his border - eg Baltic States; Poland.

bellinisurge · 20/12/2018 17:58

has not had the EU on his border.
