Westministenders: Its Really Not Getting Any Better Is It?

We are STILL on collision course for no deal.

Christmas is here, and whilst we might appreciate the respite from Brexit News, its really a luxury we can't afford.

The meaningful vote is scheduled for January.

Chaos is scheduled for shortly after.

I wish you all a happy and enjoyable Christmas.

{To change the subject a little, our old friend 10Degrees is popping up again under a new name }
Presumably talking crap and not managing any sort of realistic plan?

Missbel · 18/12/2018 11:51

I don't remember a political crisis in my rather long adult lifetime to match this. May is gambling with the country's future and Corbyn is aiding and abetting her - the man is a disaster. He won't come out against Brexit for fear of alienating the white working class vote - the old school Labour supporters who were the mainstay of the Leave vote. He won't table a No confidence motion because he knows he can't win it. John Healey's comment on R4 this morning that there won't be such a motion "until it is clear to the country that the government has failed" was disingenuous - Labour are already telling us that the government has failed. May, meanwhile, seems incapable of listening to anyone, including her own Cabinet. A sobering and interesting read here: news.liverpool.ac.uk/2018/12/13/full-speech-sir-ivan-rogers-on-brexit/

Anyone seen Spain is upping it's minimum wage by 22% ?

No wonder people are so desperate to get out of this madhouse. Thank goodness we managed just in time.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-46539748#

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced the increase on Wednesday, declaring "a rich country cannot have poor workers".

BigChocFrenzy · 18/12/2018 12:07

Depraved Eurocrat !
He should have given tax cuts to the rich instead, like the UK does

BigChocFrenzy · 18/12/2018 12:13

Nick Boles has since said he supports this and I expect there are others.
She could have canvassed all MPs, to maximise numbers and put on more pressure

Dame Caroline Spelman MPP@spelmanc*

62 MPs from across 4 political parties representing constituencies in England, Scotland and Wales have written to the PM calling for the option of leaving the EU without a deal to be ruled out now.
To crash out of the EU on 29th March without a deal would let the UK down.

Meanwhile, ever more coming out about USexit (Trump is taking them out of the world)

- and worked even harder to support him while in office."🤔

So a year or so late and only 62 of them, where have all these MPs been for the last 2 years?

BigChocFrenzy · 18/12/2018 12:24

Hiding, like they are now

spacechimp · 18/12/2018 12:27

Delurking briefly amidst increasing despair and distress to ask whether, if the HoC actually does vote on the WA before 21st Jan, Grieve III would still apply if the WA doesn't pass

lonelyplanetmum · 18/12/2018 12:32

This encapsulates the point I've tried to make with leavers on here and elsewhere. We give you what you want and quit the EU but then what? Where does it end?
I know some definitely don't like the UN? So we quit that, then what? UNESCO? Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council ? International Monetary Fund ?

The underlying premise behind this whole obsessive we need one mission is so unhinged. The world has globalised. There's a successful and mostly benign bloc on our doorstep. The only viable approach is a " if you can't beat them- join them." approach.

The problem is too many idiots want to try and beat the world, and think they actually can.

Only 62 ?

Sostenueto · 18/12/2018 12:39

Well in my very humble opinion I don't think Europe is as stable as believed. Greece and Italy on its knees, Russia flexing its muscles. And, treaties signed over 50 years may only have a certain shelf life. Will they endure for another 50 years? America seems to be withdrawing from everything at the no and everyone seems to becoming more insular and turning inwards. So, is Europe stable? I'm not so sure.

bellinisurge · 18/12/2018 12:45

I get why you think that @Sostenueto but you must remember that news media get more hits if they print/broadcast the sensationalist stuff. So while it looks on TV like all of France is in turmoil, the day to day reality is different.

IPityMaleEnvy · 18/12/2018 12:47

Corbyn is doing his job holding the government to account, his tactics and personal opinion aren't great.

BigChocFrenzy · 18/12/2018 12:47

Everything changes over time, sos but jumping off a cliff is a really bad way to cope

Hear from Tory party insider that a senior member of the government recently asked him “so what is the Single Market?”

@Ottocrat

I tend to beiieve this!

This is unbelievably awful. There never seems to be light at the end of the tunnel.

howabout · 18/12/2018 13:11

If the U.K. Parliament fails to ratify the withdrawal treaty before the country’s scheduled leaving date of March 29, the EU won’t seek a “managed no-deal,” according to an EU official. Instead, it will take unilateral steps to protect its interests, putting in place a bare minimum of emergency measures, and only if the U.K. reciprocates with its own actions, the person said. Some of the plans are due to be published later this week.
