We are STILL on collision course for no deal.

Christmas is here, and whilst we might appreciate the respite from Brexit News, its really a luxury we can't afford.

The meaningful vote is scheduled for January.

Chaos is scheduled for shortly after.

I wish you all a happy and enjoyable Christmas.

Trying to piece out the motivation behind the shenanigans:

May: A big reason to ramp up No Deal prepping - apart from trying to reduce the damage to the UK -
is to convince the EU that the UK is serious about accepting No Deal and hence they should emasculate the backstop in the WA.

Going by her summit debacle, this seems her main strategy, i.e. very forlorn hope

Does she think that No Deal - which she would blame on the EU & Remainers - would harm the Tory party more than Revoke and all-out Tory party civil war - which could not be blamed on anyone else ?

That determines whether she Revokes at the lst minute, or (reluctantly, imo) lets the clock run out an No Deal happen ?

Corbyn: Isn't one reason is avoiding a meaningful type of No Confidence vote that if it fails,
the last Labour Party conference agreement would require Labour then to push for a PV ?

PMK Xmas Sad

Sostenueto · 18/12/2018 06:30

Whether leave or remain my family comes first whatever their politics. On Xmas day politics has always been banned in my house. I, too, have a leaver coming for Xmas dinner, a future son- in-law. He is well aware that brexit or the mere mention of it is banned on Xmas day. I have rampant remainers coming too. They are also aware of the rules of my house. After Xmas day I shall sit back and listen to the arguments with a smile knowing that no matter what, my family are together when it really matters.
My biggest fear for the future will be will everyone be able to pull together when times get tough if a no deal ensues? I don't think so. My family will but others who are already stockpiling, saying dont tell anyone you have food and essentials, not thinking of others who cannot afford to do that etc may not.
I know people will be thinking of their families when they do the above. I don't blame them but my family who are not well off at all and are relatively poor will all contribute to a stash pacifically for those who cannot stockpile, the poor with children, the homeless and the elderly.
I hope, as I believe in humankind, that others will do the same when times get hard. In a macabre way falling out of EU could ultimately bring us all together. Merry Xmas to you all.Flowers

(from previous thread)

Cabinet will tomorrow order Britain’s six million businesses to start immediate preparations for a No Deal Brexit

"Order" ????

How does that work then ? How does cabinet order me to do something ? And how does the reply GFYTTFSOFATFOSM work for them ?

Sostenueto · 18/12/2018 06:57

If we leave with no deal I'm sure the government will be issuing all sorts of pamphlets, warnings, and official notices to not only businesses but to each and every one of us as we will be in a situation similar to war where shortages may well be the order of the day. And businesses may well have to comply with government ' orders' or go out of business!

Sostenueto · 18/12/2018 06:59

So as not to scare anyone too much there may even be ration books before long to stop people stockpilingGrin

Plonkysaurus · 18/12/2018 07:07

I'm properly confused about JC's no confidence motion.
I get that it's non binding, political not legal etc. Did he withdraw it when she called his bluff?

Thought of a wonderful description for JRM though (after he said he now has confidence in TM) - a worm with an arsehole at each end

Sostenueto · 18/12/2018 07:17

I thought JCs calling for no confidence motion was symbolic and forcing May to put her deal up before Xmas. Rather than put no confidence in government he chose to put it as no confidence in May knowing full well at this moment a general election is not viable. Once WA is put to vote then I think he will go for a general election when WA falls. Only my opinion as I'm not as politically aware as most on here. I'm only a learner.

IrenetheQuaint · 18/12/2018 07:20
Wine
Sostenueto · 18/12/2018 07:21

Also JC doesn't want another referendum ( yet) that's his fallout position as lots in his party don't want one. He wants a GE. As with May party politics before the country.Sad

GD12 · 18/12/2018 07:22

So what's going on with JRM and the ERG? They seem to be backing May now? Do they know something we don't that May is now heading for a hard Brexit or has she offered them places in her cabinet if they pass her deal? Seems some strange things are going on.

lonelyplanetmum · 18/12/2018 07:26

Don't Leavers yet realise with each word they say they are giving oxygen to the ERG?

How can anyone support any MP of any party who agitates for a vote of no confidence in their own leader. Then within only 7 days says they have complete confidence in her? It's doublespeak of gargantuan proportions.

GD12 · 18/12/2018 07:33

@PickardGE

not saying no-deal planning is going badly but Whitehall still hasn’t managed to procure its emergency ships

PMK. Trying to enjoy this Christmas as much as possible because if we leave with No Deal Christmas is going to look pretty different from next year on.

Theresa May will present three Brexit countdown options to cabinet

Theresa May will ask her cabinet to vote on three options today for how the country prepares for Brexit in a move that is likely to see a rapid acceleration in no-deal planning.

Details of the approaches are so sensitive that ministers will only be allowed to study a paper setting them out inside No 10 before today’s meeting, according to one.

The Times understands that senior government figures acknowledge that the cabinet is likely to back the option that would see no-deal preparations stepped up and centralised across Whitehall.

Government gives Britain’s 6 million businesses 101 days to prepare for a No Deal Brexit
The dramatic move s part of a significant ramping up of the PM’s threat to walk away from the EU without any agreement unless Brussels agrees to improve its terms

THE Cabinet will on Tuesday order Britain’s six million businesses to start immediate preparations for a No Deal Brexit, The Sun can reveal.

The dramatic move will be signed off by Theresa May and her top table Tuesday morning.

Hey retailers, who have had the worst November in years, we know you are struggling to even make a profit this year but hey we have decided to go for no deal. This will obviously help boost last minute sales.

Happy Christmas.

DG via emergency powers which they can invoke any time from the 2004 Civil Contingencies Act
I'd expected that to wait until 30 March, but of course we're already far too late in prepping

GD12 "So what's going on with JRM and the ERG?"^

They wanted to replace her as PM with one of their own, but to keep a Tory government

They don't want to risk losing their own seats, or the Tory party losing the GE
There are 57 Conservative seats with majorities of less than 4,000

GD12 · 18/12/2018 08:00

^^Yep.

Business Secretary’s Workers’ Rights Blitz Takes Hit As His Own Staff Vote To Strike
Government urged to bring outsourced staff back in-house.

Contract staff in the government’s business department have voted to strike over pay and conditions – on the same day ministers promoted a new drive to protect workers’ rights.

Cleaners, security guards and caterers in the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) voted for action as part of a campaign for the London Living Wage, currently £10.55 an hour.
