We are STILL on collision course for no deal.

Christmas is here, and whilst we might appreciate the respite from Brexit News, its really a luxury we can't afford.

The meaningful vote is scheduled for January.

Chaos is scheduled for shortly after.

I wish you all a happy and enjoyable Christmas.

Didn't hear anyone in Parliament voicing their concerns about airplane and national security when drones became available to the public. Hence laws that are not rigid enough ( just in case businesses involved got the hump) and rubbing together of hands at the thought of all that lolly going either into their own pockets or into the governments coffers via tax.

Grinchly · 20/12/2018 23:11

Not being.

Grinchly · 20/12/2018 23:11

Sorry that was to big choc.

Sostenueto · 20/12/2018 23:15

Ahhh! Tech is soooo wonderful isn't it??!

1tisILeClerc · 20/12/2018 23:15

Much depends on whether the drones are 'commercial' and who has programmed them. Yes the 'domestic' varieties have limiters in them of various kinds but once you get into the 'professional' market it is quite easy to get very sophisticated machines. They may not even really have a 'controller' but have been programmed to buzz about semi randomly for a while and return somewhere. Suddenly returning to a waiting car or small van would be almost undetectable, especially as it wouldn't have to actually be anywhere near the airport.

1tisILeClerc · 20/12/2018 23:19

Having a knife and stabbing someone is illegal, it doesn't stop it from happening.
The law is way too slow for some things, especially to do with technology.

Sostenueto · 20/12/2018 23:20

Yep sounds plausable leClerc

There used to be a time, 15 or 20 years ago when the U.K. was actually very good at emergency planning.

Regular exercises took place, across many specialisms across gov and emergency services. Boots could be put on the ground quickly and effectively.

Now the resources are not there and thanks to austerity, the corporate memory is lost as people have left and centres of expertise dissipated.

Same as in many Whitehall depts now. That coupled with the utter incompetence of the government is why Brexit is brewing into such a 'perfect storm.'

Sostenueto · 20/12/2018 23:22

Its a new industry and the government being Tory, likes to encourage new businesses that their members can invest in. Grin

jasjas1973 · 20/12/2018 23:25

There was a HoLs paper on Drones which the Gov ignored 5 years ago, only allow certain radio operating frequencies, licencing, import controls and counter measures etc.

The Government ignored it much like they are ignoring the dangers of brexit, Gatwick is just another national humiliation, in a long line.. and brexit will be/is another.

Now its too late as no one has a fucking clue what is out there or how they are controlled.

Its silly to pretend this is a bored school kid.

grinchly oh so true. After getting rid of half our troops the armed forces cannot now recruit enough willing youngsters to fight for their country. As most young people now think European first, nationalism is also almost disapaited. Times change, people change, countries change.....but this bloody government doesn't!

1tisILeClerc · 20/12/2018 23:33

I was watching Youtube programme about underground London. One part was about a 'spare' war room complex for WW2 at Dollis Hill.
Apparently it cost the equivalent of around £40 Million and only 2 meetings were ever held there as Churchill stayed in the bunker near Downing Street throughout the war.
There was also a chain of 26 'nuclear bunkers' across the UK during the cold war. Royal Observer Corps. These were command centres collating info from 1,500 'observers' plotting all plane movements from 1959 to 1992. Apart from being 'manned' 24/7/365 they never saw enemy action.

BigChocFrenzy · 20/12/2018 23:39

Our image abroad - before the Brexit humilation - was based on how we used to be.

However, the financial crash caused the govt to make cuts, which kept going on and on, in areas that didn't affect the public in their daily lives, so no political fallout.

The institutional memory in many fields has been lost
Also the ability to deal well in crises, which is really a function of scoping out in advance what emergencies might happen, planning for each and practicing
which means creating groups and keeping them together to do that.

Our reputation in the EU used to be for "being good in a crisis, once they recognise that it is one !"

Now we are no longer particularly good, because the people on the ground aren't as well prepared as they should be and the kit often isn't adequate either
As for crises, we refuse to recognise some that don't fit in with feelz.

ButteryParsnips · 20/12/2018 23:52

It has made us look like proper chumps. What a way to restore our fading reputation on the world stage Hmm

RedToothBrush · 20/12/2018 23:55

And all the grown up looking after the toddler in the big white building across the pond have just checked out and left him home alone with the big red button.

Scary.
