Westminstenders: May plays Sale of the Century

Theresa May is currently in the midst of a campaign to sell her deal to the public. Unfortunately she appears that there are only 649 people she needs to sell it to, and that's not going so well.

She attempted a sales pitch to potential Labour rebels and succeeded in getting them to actively decide to vote against her.

There are currently 100 backbench tories who have stated they will vote against it, which makes parliamentary maths very difficult.

There is a rising support for plan b in the form of Norway Plus. This may make Remainers less likely to vote for a deal but persuade some leavers to back May.

The ECJ A50 Court case has been heard. Judgment has not been given yet. Its due 'soon'.

Next week the Withdrawal Agreement will be debated in Parliament with the vote due at 7pm on Tuesday 11th December.

Expect a rough couple of weeks.

I might live forever then.

The linked article says that 17 countries have to be involved in negotiation so the outcomes are not known at this point.
If you want to feel sick and despondent see some of the headlines in the Daily Express. Continuing to talk bollocks and having no respect.
That Scottish MEP's comments started to make me feel ill.

SusanWalker · 28/11/2018 19:32

For all JRMs attempts to come across as a calm, measured and polite person I always get the impression that there is an angry man underneath. But then a lot of brexiteers come across as angry.

ElliePhillips · 28/11/2018 19:50

I can't believe what a mess this Brexit nonsense all is and that people (I heard calls to Eddie Mair this afternoon) are still happy to support it despite the fact that it will be detrimental to the country.

All this heartache just to save a tiny fishing industry and please the country's xenophobes. The country has gone mad. Sad

prettybird · 28/11/2018 19:51

1TisILeClerc - I've lost track: what (and who) was the Scottish MEP's comment? Confused

1tisILeClerc · 28/11/2018 19:58

{Addressing colleagues during the European Parliament plenary in Brussels on Wednesday, Mr Coburn said: "George Orwell said ‘if you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stamping on a human face forever.’
"The EU has tried to stamp a jackboot down on Britain with its recent so-called Brexit deal for democratically daring to leave. An attempted enslavement of the very nation that fought the Nazis and liberated Europe.
"The EU is supposed to be about Government by consent, not force."}

Copy and pasted from Express.

Pretty.
Sorry about that, I got the Scottish bit wrong.
However the crap he was spouting is still disgusting.
A 'Truth and reconciliation' committee following this Brexit mess with large fines which would be redistributed to fund a (reformed) UC would be good. Sting JRM for a few million for a start.

48. The analysis assumes that all EU trade agreements with third countries are transitioned in their current states to UK-specific arrangements, including those EU agreements that are provisionally applied or agreed but not yet ratified.41 Therefore, the modelling does not capture any potential short run changes in the UK's trading relationships with these countries as a result of the UK leaving the EU.

49. In keeping with the Government's ambitious free trade agenda, the analysis also assumes that, in the long run, the UK secures new trade agreements with international partners. These agreements are assumed to cover a broad range of potential trading partners, including the United States, Australia, New Zealand, and other members of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership.42 Assumptions for the illustrative range of new partnerships are set out in terms of changes to tariffs and non-tariff barriers. The Department for International Trade will provide country-specific assessments as appropriate in the negotiation of individual future FTAs. For modelling purposes, the analysis makes no assumptions about any additional agreements that the EU may strike with third countries.

I have got so used to no longer being shocked Buteo I am trying to figure out what to do with my face Shock

Buteo · 28/11/2018 20:25

HesterThrale JRM sounded rattled, resorting to an ad hominem attack, and lying through his teeth. Carney was a senior civil servant in Canada, not a politician.

Buteo · 28/11/2018 20:27

frumpety I’m Shock too - very surprised this isn’t being seized upon by the media.

WhatWouldScoobyDoo · 28/11/2018 20:33

Thank you for the new thread Flowers

frumpety · 28/11/2018 20:34

Loving the term 'ambitious free trade agenda' though, truly a thing of make believe beauty, bit like unicorns Grin

prettybird · 28/11/2018 20:34

Coburn is unfortunately a Scottish MEP Sad He is the only elected UKIP member in any capacity at any level in Scotland Shock He only got in at the last EU elections as the LibDem vote collapsed and he got in under "last man standing" Sad (iirc, I think the SNP were just short of the threshold to get the 3rd SNP MEP).

He is an execrable, odious, misogynistic, bigoted little piece of shit. (I'm not normally that rude but he deserves every word) Angry

prettybird · 28/11/2018 20:37

(I had had a suspicion it must have Coburn as the rest of our MEPs are quite good - including the lovely Alyn Smith, he of the "chers amis" address to the European Parliament Smile)

frumpety · 28/11/2018 20:38

I am upscaling the description of my pitiful weight loss regime to 'ambitious personal reduction agenda' Wink

BestIsWest · 28/11/2018 20:41

.

frumpety · 28/11/2018 20:42

Looks like Coburn could do with a ambitious personal reduction agenda, will email him a copy of mine, save him the trouble of thinking too hard

WhatWouldScoobyDoo · 28/11/2018 21:03

frumpety 😂 genius. My exercise program has now also been renamed.

lonelyplanetmum · 28/11/2018 21:04

I'm a sucker for David Attenborough myself too

He says sensible stuff about the clusterfuck too.

Truly shocked at that 'express article, why oh why does everything have to come back to WW2 ?

The article of course begs the question why did May sign it then?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 28/11/2018 21:26

Thanks Red. Another thread, another shit show :(

bellinisurge · 28/11/2018 21:35

I heard that JRM interview on PM. He sounded like such a fake. Sadly some people are still impressed by posh boys. Even third rate ones. Whining about allegations that Brexiteers are liars followed by a mealy mouthed attempted slag off of anyone who disagreed with him. Teenager stuff.

Arborea · 28/11/2018 21:46

Hey Jacob, why don’t you and your pals do a letter-writing campaign to get rid of him?
