There's a deal.

The press are over excited.

May has united the country.

Everyone hates it.
(Apart from David Allen Green)

Parliament might yet reject it.

Nothing is yet decided and everything is still to be sorted.

There was more

James Patrick

The “national interest” line boils down to this:

There is no better deal on offer while leaving and leaving with no deal will kill people.

That’s the shit sandwich the government has had to bite and at this point anyone who votes down the deal is opting to kill people.

And the thing I shouldn’t need to add is that the sensible option is to cancel this sorry mess and try and pick up the fragmented pieces of Britain and start again.

However, that has to come from the government, as provoking a GE will see an ERG Tory government or a Populist Labour government intent on Brexit in much the same way.

So the second part of the shit sandwich is that by accepting the deal we prolong the existing misery until 2020

Which means two years of the nonsense and national insecurity leading us to a repeat of this very precipice when it dawns we can’t do a full trade deal in that time.

But, as I said, in the absence of anyone willing to just call it off, the national interest is not killing folk.

So this is the mess, the very real mess I’ve been trying depserately to get people to understand. There is no fantasy fix. No magic vote. Just risk, obvious, real risk of serious harm, the immediacy of the threat inching ever closer until..here we are.

I just wish it had sunk in

If May can’t get this deal through or revoke Article 50, it’s no deal. That’s it.

This is a concise thread.

If you can’t see it this morning in the face of events, there’s nothing anyone can do to help you get back to reality.

^Dominic Raab, Brexsec
Shailesh Vara, Northern Ireland minister
Esther McVey work and pensions
Suella Braverman, a minister at the DexEU
Anne-Marie Trevelyan- parliamentary private secretary in the Department for Education^

Thanks lonelyplanet!

Well, on the plus side, the average level of competence and compassion in government has improved this morning. Maybe it'll improve some more in due course.

And then Fox will resign and the average cabinet IQ will go up by 10 points.

Sam Coates Times @SamCoatesTimes
Andrea Leadsom and Penny Mordaunt still on front bench. Both grim faced

Ooo have they bottled it?!

Now is not the time or place but:
{ And in the majority of cases, abuse of power is a male thing - }
In my life the 2 most significant cases of abuse to me have been female family members.

For those too young, this is what Black Wednesday was like .... only with interest rates ...

There's fuck all you can do about it, so you may as well enjoy the spectacle.

RedToothBrush · 15/11/2018 10:38

And then Fox will resign and the average cabinet IQ will go up by 10 points.

So it will be 90 then?

Yep, @DGRossetti - feels like Black Wednesday +++++ to an old git like me.

RedToothBrush · 15/11/2018 10:39

May is actually giving a good statement tbh. Especially under the circumstances.

Fair play to her

Trump and Putin are rubbing their hands together. Ever closer union is right.

@smilethoyourheartisbreaking - she is definitely wearing her toughest big girl pants as she talks.

Just read that the French Finance ministry were quite pleased with what they saw of the proposed deal.

Not sure if that had anything to do with it ....

She has some big lady pants.

She sure does.

Don't like her, don't like her politics, but she is courageous and I think she genuinely believes she is doing her duty.

DGRossetti · 15/11/2018 10:44

Liam isn't resigning.

Brexiteers and the ERG aren't immune to infighting either ... I bet there's a lot of very careful manoeuvring going on. There are a lot of wannabe alpha males in play.

PainInTheEar Great post.

What I am (hopefully irrationally) worried about is that prolonged economic and political uncertainty mixed with politicians and mainstream media painting the EU as hostile to British interests and constructing the UK as a victim of foreign powers creates a perfect storm for war mongering, similar to German in the 1920s and 30s.

I hope this is an entirely irrational fear.

RedToothBrush · 15/11/2018 10:45

Esther Webber @estwebber
Brexit Minister Lord Callanan tells me he's staying put "to provide you with more twitter material"!

Corbyn: it's not a unicorn or everlasting cake.

Is this man fucking stupid or what?

I really despise the mixture of flat-out stupidity and cynical dishonesty on the Labour front bench.
