Westministenders: Game Over?

May has a draft deal which she has presented to the Cabinet. Woohooo!

The catch is, it doesn't mention the Irish Border. Just a minor point. This is because she has no way forward on it. There are so many red lines from so many different groups shes tangled up in knots with them.

She wrote a letter to the DUP to tell them to suck it up. Arlene has told her to stick it. And if she hadn't told her to stick it, Scottish Tories would have told her to stick it. David Davis has told her to stick it. Rees-Moog has told her to stick it. And this afternoon, one of the Ministers for Queues at Dover, Jo Johnson, told her to stick it and that we need a people's vote. On top of that, her plans to try and get cross party support and get the Labour Party to support it, have suffered a blow as Momentum voted to tell May to stick it.

In fact it might be harder to think of people who WILL support it.

Not that this is a surprise. We've all be aware of this for some time. Is it finally game over?

The government have at least seemingly realised that this month is the last opportunity they have for a deal. Dominic has also realised that Dover is quite close to France and this is quite a big deal.

The EU pushed back their meeting until the 27th. This coincidentally is the same day there is a decision over a50 at the ECJ and the right to revoke.

If May can't get her act together over the Irish Border, this might yet prove to be the last option open to her, to prevent Brexmaggeddon.

Jo Johnson is not too far from the mark with vassalage or chaos? Take your pick Mrs May.

I think Boris is keeping his eye open for a bandwagon to jump on.

borntobequiet · 10/11/2018 08:13

I too have emailed Jo Johnson to say thank you.
I don’t think his mention of Boris and his views is of great significance - it would have been more odd if there were no such mention. They do seem to be a close family who are very fond of one another. (I’ve heard Rachel J criticise Boris’ views and actions but not him as a person.)

{May has just been savaged by a dead sheep with perfect timing.}
Funny you should say that because over in EU land they are training an army of mercenary guinea pigs with an inbuilt hatred of Brexiteers to unleash on Westminster.
It's all very 'hush hush' unless we don't give them more food on time.
Some of them are trained as negotiators, where they sit with particularly cute poses, while their team mates tear down the fabric of Brexiteer society (mostly involving eating).

Brexit is by far the most dangerous and complex event for the UK since WW2

I am still horrified and outraged that those in charge are ignorant of the most basic facts about UK trade which were widely published before the referendum

  • and which ordinary Westministenders have known for about 2 years

Surely top civil servants like Ivan Richards and Ollie Robbins were telling them all this - but Richards was forced to resign
According to that civil servant consultant JJ on RNorth's blog, he also presented trade facts to them

The Cabinet ignored facts they didn't like on an issue which decides the nation's future

They have bitterly divided the country longterm, between Remainers and Leavers who will each blame the other side for sabotaging their future

They should be charged with Misconduct in Public Office
and receive jail time & huge fines

Of course that won't happen; they'll swan off leaving an angry divided people to suffer and maybe fight

HesterThrale · 10/11/2018 08:41

Maybe you have something there Bellini
I think Boris is keeping his eye open for a bandwagon to jump on. Although I think he likes to ‘create’ a movement rather than jump on one once it’s started. He likes to purport to be the ‘brave, outspoken, attention-grabbing pioneer’ who upsets the applecart.

On another note, Carol Cadwalladr winning this prize for her Cambridge Analytica work is great.

And I hope Amelia Gentleman (whose husband is Jo Johnson) sometime gets recognition for her tireless work exposing the Windrush fiasco. mobile.twitter.com/ameliagentleman?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor

Well done, Carol Cadwalladr ! 👏🏼

The prize was thoroughly deserved
and showed the respect of her international peers

I too would like to see Cooper in charge of Labour. If only...

Another Leave-backing financier transfers money to Dublin. The cynicism of these people.

Can you imagine Corbyn agreeing to a cross party coalition? We have to accept that he wants a hard Brexit.

MsForestierinParis · 10/11/2018 10:00

So disappointed with Corbyn, although I was never a fan. My poor brain seems to have slotted Keir Starmer into the leader of the opposition role simply because I see him discussing Brexit so much. It's a rude awakening when reality kicks in.

Annandale · 10/11/2018 10:03

Corbyn has been a Lexiter all his life. I can't forgive him for not coming out and saying so from the start of his leadership, which would a) have been honest and b) might have split Labour to some positive effect. When i hear people say he has integrity i snort.

MsForestierinParis · 10/11/2018 10:05

I agree Annandale

By simple 'logic' Labour's 6 tests can ONLY mean Remain (fully) if you take the words at face value as ANYTHING other than that is and will be WORSE than the deal we have/had.
Of course weasel words and refusal to say and work for Remaining has killed off any real chance. The rest of the EU had shelled out billions and has moved on in the last 2 1/2 years and is probably queuing up to pick the meat off the carcass (as indeed are Moggy and the ERG).
With this in mind, it might be prudent for companies that do get bought out to steer themselves to EU investors rather than anything relating to the ERG and co.

Icantreachthepretzels · 10/11/2018 10:29

although selfishly hoping it doesn't prevent taxi getting me from A to B in time

I'll try to halt the march for any taxis I see. Grin

I'm not sure what is expected of this march - York isn't very big, so it might just end up being me, one man and his dog. But I'll report back this evening.

Have a great one pretzels.Looks nice and sunny?.Smile

Icantreachthepretzels · 10/11/2018 10:39

and receive jail time & huge fines

I have been musing that one way to try and fill the black hole in our exchequer created by brexit would be to channel our inner Roman Emperors and just seize all assets of those facing treason charges and just quietly tip them into the family coffers.
IDS, JRM, Boris, The Mays, Cameron, Arron Banks ... it wouldn't make up for what they did, but it would be a little something. And the thought of them losing what matters the most, and facing a life time of penury gives me actual warm tingles.
Of course we would have to enact legislation that allowed us to retroactively declare offshore accounts illegal and so give us the capacity to ferret out their money no matter where they stowed it.

If only they had voted to give sweeping new powers to the PM that effectively allowed them to do whatever they want ...

Icantreachthepretzels · 10/11/2018 10:41

Looks nice and sunny?

It's overcast in Leeds - but not raining. But it could be glorious sunshine by the time I get to York.

1tisILeClerc · 10/11/2018 10:57

{If only they had voted to give sweeping new powers to the PM that effectively allowed them to do whatever they want ...}
I presume a reference to Henry V111 powers.
Just trying to think of other countries leaders who have plundered their own country for personal financial gain while under a pretense of democracy....
Why are so many of the 600 odd MPs appearing to sit idly by while the ERG and others do this to the country? Surely there SHOULD have been riots in Westminster? A few speak out and make it to the headlines but surely as a roughly equally divided house somewhere near half should be shouting their heads off to stop this nonsense.

ATAD will do this, albeit not retroactively, but certainly going forward.
ATAD comes into effect on 1st April 2019. I'm sure none of those on your list are worried.

SusanWalker · 10/11/2018 12:30

I have posted my letter first class so hopefully it will get there ok.

Jeremy Corbyn has flown under the radar so much since the last election you forget he exists. I think of him as all fur coat and no knickers, something which applies to many a brexiteer.

Rachel Johnson mentioned that her brother Leo was also on the peoples vote march in her New European column so I think most of the family are actually remainers.

SusanWalker · 10/11/2018 12:35

I too would like Yvette Cooper as Labour leader and am hanging onto my membership so I can vote in the next leadership election. I have often thought of leaving over anti semitism but if all the people like me leave, then all that's left are the corbynistas.
