Westministenders: Deadline Day #1

We have hit another Deadline Day.

As it stands, the EU are looking for more progress. May is digging in her heels by suggesting there is new a requirement for backstop to a backstop. The backstop to all intents and purposes is the GFA. So May is saying in effect, that the EU are forcing her to put in provisions to protect an international agreement we are signed up to, and if we breech it we risk peace in NI.

After lots of noise it seems that the Cabinet have decided to stick by May. For now.

The EU look like they are talking as if their meeting next month will exclude the UK and just go straight to No Deal planning.

There is also other talk of alternatives to allow the UK to stay in the customs union. But theres not much to that and it still doesn't solve the ERG and the DUP problem.

May is vastly unestimating how much the ERG and the DUP want to break the GFA. Which is a huge misjudgment.

There is also talk of the final final Deadline Day actually being Dec 13. For various reasons its not. Thats 29th March.

So Wednesday is Deadline Day #1. Expect more.

It was an amazing day. Utterly cream crackered now. We couldn't get any where near Parliament square as it was full all the way up.

Utter bastard bbc headlines now showing a helicopters view of trafalgar square after it had all quietened down.

Talkstotrees · 20/10/2018 18:32

I saw a good one which had a picture of Boris Johnson and said “Dickus populus - the willy of the people”. Made me snigger.

WhatWouldScoobyDoo · 20/10/2018 18:35

talks 😂

colouringinpro · 20/10/2018 18:41

I saw that one Friday! There were some brilliant ones Grin

Guy Verhofstadt @guyverhofstadt
Emotional to see so many people from all walks of life marching for a different future. Politicians might take Britain out of the EU, but it won't stop people feeling European. #PeoplesVoteMarch #IamEuropean

I've been following the march all day on Twitter! All you marchers rock Flowers

The Leavers are rattled, no doubt about it. I said to DH early this morning that some Leaver is sure to come out with nonsense like "Well it wasn't 17 million" and sure enough, I saw it on the other thread Grin

The very idea that protest isn't meaningful unless everybody of that view physically congregates in one single location, it's just farcical, especially when coupled with the desperation that people must be prevented from registering their views where they are normally located aka by VOTING.

Tom Newton Dunn @tnewtondunn
Blimey, is that who it look likes? The Prime Ministerial-looking woman, bottom right, behind the beret bloke...

Grin If only she were lurking in the crowds today

come out with nonsense like "well it wasn't 17 million"

My eyes rolled so far and so hard I had to pick them up off the floor before the dog got them.

OhLookHeKickedTheBall · 20/10/2018 19:31

I've been trying to upload this and it just wont let me!

Was heaving today, couldn't even get into Parliament Square. Got trapped by trafalagar instead.

This was my favourite thing today.

Couldn't get to parliament square but managed to get close enough to a screen to hear the speeches, really powerful and uplifting.

borntobequiet · 20/10/2018 19:33

Had a really good day at the march with EU flag and red toothbrush stuck together in my topknot. Forgot about them on train home so got funny looks when I alighted said train in deepest rural Cotswolds.
Sorry I missed you Lonely!

Hasenstein · 20/10/2018 19:43

Just got back from the march. I don't think my feet will ever work again!

What a fantastic day, though. Could tell it was huge, as it took me about 2 hours just to get to our starting point in the June march. No way I could get into Parliament Square this time, so had to watch the speeches on a big screen half-way up Whitehall. At the end of the speeches, they said people were still setting off from Marble Arch!

Sadly, didn't see any other MNers, despite having a large red tooth-brush prominently on display. Still, dozens of people asked me what it was for (most thought I'd come prepared for an overnight stay), so I got plenty of Westminstenders propaganda in Grin.

Met some really lovely people from all over the country on a peaceful and good-natured march. So encouraging to feel you're not alone and that people are really well-informed about the issues. Talked to loads of people of my rather advanced age, which shows that not all oldies voted leave , as well as to lots of incredibly clued-up young people.

Was it worth it? Who knows and, quite frankly, I don't care right now, as it's renewed my faith in the fundamentally decent and considerate nature of people who really do care for this country. In contrast to the selfishness and "I'm alright Jack" views so often heard from the other side.

Hazard, your vibes worked a treat and I didn't feel nervous even when it got pretty crowded at times. Have a big Gin and some Flowers.

Hasenstein · 20/10/2018 19:45

Oh yes, forgot to mention how great it was to exchange grins with people in the train home proudly wearing "Bollocks to Brexit" stickers.

FridayThirteenth · 20/10/2018 19:48

Agree @Hasenstein the journey home was great, spotting people with stickers and feeling a real sense of solidarity

Brilliant march
Well done, the Red Toothbrush Gang 👏🏼 ✨

woman11017 · 20/10/2018 19:54

Just back too. It was like the Womens March; with each station on my route filling with pro EU protestors.

Beautiful day, and the party was still going with thousands in the Mall and Parliament Square when I left at 5pm.

Normally marches fill two lanes. This one filled two lanes on Park Lane, then the pavement then the middle section, then we blocked traffic in on the opposite side, another 2 lanes. Took till 2.30pm to get to Green Park, which was closed because of us. Westminster Station closed too.

It was big. Couldn't get near Parliament Square for the speeches.
I liked the dancey hippy bus. Wink

Sorry I didn't meet CatfromJapan but it was quite busy. Smile

Thank you to everyone who marched. I wanted to be there, but such is life for a self employed photographer. The pictures I've seen look fantastic.

ShinyElena · 20/10/2018 20:19

Thank you to all of you who could make it. Flowers and Gin

woman11017 · 20/10/2018 20:24

You guys are hundreds of miles away. Mrs8 and others. It's fair enough you couldn't make it. You keep people fed! Arguable much more useful.

I presume the march all will make no difference.

But the state of the government buildings on the Mall at 5pm, just by No 10 with the gifted placards and stickers might just nudge a few?
