Westministenders: Deadline Day #1

We have hit another Deadline Day.

As it stands, the EU are looking for more progress. May is digging in her heels by suggesting there is new a requirement for backstop to a backstop. The backstop to all intents and purposes is the GFA. So May is saying in effect, that the EU are forcing her to put in provisions to protect an international agreement we are signed up to, and if we breech it we risk peace in NI.

After lots of noise it seems that the Cabinet have decided to stick by May. For now.

The EU look like they are talking as if their meeting next month will exclude the UK and just go straight to No Deal planning.

There is also other talk of alternatives to allow the UK to stay in the customs union. But theres not much to that and it still doesn't solve the ERG and the DUP problem.

May is vastly unestimating how much the ERG and the DUP want to break the GFA. Which is a huge misjudgment.

There is also talk of the final final Deadline Day actually being Dec 13. For various reasons its not. Thats 29th March.

So Wednesday is Deadline Day #1. Expect more.

And thanks Mrsr8 fo what you did today x

But by far the saddest thing is the huge number of homeless people which is a lot to do with the lack of health and social care - which is where the arch-Brexiteers are trying to take us

Yes indeed, TheElementsSong, SF is quite a hellhole, as is LA (where there has been an outbreak of typhus recently among the homeless). And the same can be said for many other US cities.

It has got to the point where it is now thanks to huge disparity in income, the poor squeezed out of metro area housing, minimum wages offering nowhere near a living wage, no job security, and the absence of a safety net or the will to create one.

And yyy, this is what the ERG has in mind for the UK. It's already visible.

Hazardswan · 20/10/2018 20:45

hasenstein YAY!!!!!

Reading everyone's descriptions of the day and the journey home has started me off blubbing again Grin

mrs you are a super Star

...the 'fascists' are the ones trying to overturn a DEMOCRATIC vote - won that over 17million people supported

So, threetrees -
How would you describe a political party in the UK and a group within another party in the UK trying to overturn an international treaty that was signed after a 71.1% majority in one jurisdiction voted in favour of it in a referendum, and a 94.4% majority in another jurisdiction that was party to the treaty voted in its favour in a referendum?

Both referenda explicitly binding, btw, and DEMOCRATIC.

Among the terms that spring to my mind, 'fascist' is to the forefront.

I am interested to see what your list would consist of.

prettybird there were too many people for me to get near the rally, but I understand Nicola Sturgeon's address went down an absolute storm.
If she stood for leadership in england too, she'd storm it atm. Wink

right, like where is the pro brexit free speech in places like BBC, Guardian, Labour Party etc etc.

You are either trying to be funny or not at all familiar with most of the comments sections of most online media.

Right under most articles on Brexit you will find all the poorly spelled, ungrammatical and uninformed screeds you could hope or wish for.

Knock yourself out.

mathanxiety · 20/10/2018 21:02

The 'No Irish No gay' motorway sign was also aimed at Leo Varadkar personally.

mathanxiety · 20/10/2018 21:03

threetrees
What sort of people would put up a sign saying 'No Irish No gay'?

woman11017 · 20/10/2018 21:21

Long game Emily chances of a vote are thin.

People rising up against this torrid little coup aren't.

Ironic that little jerry corbyn decided to draw attention to Chile's dictatorship and how it was defeated today:Not dissimilar to our grass roots groups and the march today.

Across the EU, people saw how much we value what we have.

@peteraltmaier
People’s vote marche is the most impressive and deeply moving support for Europe I‘ve ever seen. Millions across Europe feel with you! Thx so much!!! Danke! Merci!

Hazardswan · 20/10/2018 21:46

Just checked my ignorant labour MP's twitter. No mention of today so I sent a quick email even though he has not replied to my other emails

^Just a quick email to point out there was a march today where aprox 700,000 people turned up in support of a people's vote and a final say.

Food for thought really isn't it?

Regards^

I tried writing more but I just sounded angry and bitter and you lot deserve better then angry and bitter Grin

woman I know, the right side of history is sadly rarely the right side of short term politics. I share the worry that there needs to be some sort of catharsis of the collective sense of post colonial entitlement and frustration that Slease Mogg and Boris exploit..... I see some sort of hope in that I was on the train with lots of marchers but then surrounded by a bunch of older football fans commenting they were sharing the train with “them Eurocrats”, but then when we discussed how many were there and why I was there one of them said “my son marched too” and there was definitely a sense of respecting the reasons —or maybe they just didn’t want to set off a bolshie woman— 😂

I’m back

I’ve only been able to skim read today’s thread as I have to be sociable with the-in-laws. Amazing day. Lovely atmosphere. Lots of people of all ages. I got to Parliament Square. I met Femi. It’s the only time I’ve asked someone for a selfie! I’d post it but - we’ll it’s a selfie - a bit outing. Having said that, not sure why that matters really. Anyway, while I ponder on whether I dare to do it, here’s a pic of one of my favourite banners.

woman11017 · 20/10/2018 22:10

We shall see, Emily.
They're using traditional authoritarian techniques, we're using traditional grass roots techniques.
They have their money, there is the internet........ for now..........

BestIsWest · 20/10/2018 22:10

Just got home to Wales from the March. What an amazing day and what a turnout. So much patience from everyone, waiting in Hyde Park.

We got stuck on Whitehall as Parliament square was too full.

Favourite placard was this one.

Having a large glass of wine now.

I'm so sorry too Born. It was just too difficult to get a signal when you needed it.

I carried my red tooth brush but didn't see any more.

Favourite placard was " I'm a bit cross."

BestIsWest · 20/10/2018 22:12

Demographics were interesting. Average age on our coach was 5O+ and I’d say there were a good number of over 60s there today.

Hasenstein · 20/10/2018 22:22

I’d say there were a good number of over 60s there today.

Yup.

Favourite banner: Hard or soft. It's still shit.

prettybird · 20/10/2018 22:23

I think the age of the marchers is what might give the Conservatives pause for thought: so many of their core demographic.

Having said that, I'm not sure the Conservative Party can think coherently any more, it is so riven Sad (The Sad is on behalf of democracy, because much as I hate the Conservatives and would never ever vote for them, they do or did have a place within the spectrum of politics.)

Icantreachthepretzels · 20/10/2018 22:24

I got back to Leeds about an hour ago. What an amazing day!!!! I started off at the Dorchester - the crowds were so big we didn't start marching until well after two and I didn't get to Trafalgar square until ten to four! I missed all the speeches - but for such a wonderful reason!

I fought my way down to Downing street - as everyone leaving the rally was headed back up. I've never seen anything like it. And I was very pleased to see that the door to the cabinet office had had a good stickering again - and this time the police weren't guarding it.

I hope today really scared TM (if her flunkies dare tell her the numbers) if this is October - what would a march closer to deadline day be like? (I think come the 29th March we should all stand outside Downing street dressed all in black and just do the Viking thunder clap until she relents and panic-revokes article 50)

One of my favourite things that happened today: I walked past Claridge's on the way to Marble Arch., They were flying an EU flag and there were a couple of doormen and bellhops outside. As I walked past, in my remainer T-shirt, the doorman told me to shout extra loud for them. When I finally get my lottery win - I know which upmarket hotel will be my go to place to stay when I visit the capital Grin

SingingBabooshkaBadly · 20/10/2018 22:28

lonelyplant, I love ‘I’m a bit cross’, it’s very Father Ted (Down with this sort of thing)

Best yes, there were a lot of older people weren’t there? I spotted a woman who looked 90ish being pushed in a wheelchair.

Icantreachthepretzels · 20/10/2018 22:29

There was a 'down with this sort of thing' placard!

KennDodd · 20/10/2018 22:33

Is there a link anywhere with the speeches from the rally?

woman11017 · 20/10/2018 22:35

I saw a couple of elderly marchers fall ill.

There are some absolutely amazing older heroes working for this.

Lots of Londoners too. (all nations, all classes, all 'ethnic' groups)

And hippies!.Smile Wink
