Westministenders: Deadline Day #1

We have hit another Deadline Day.

As it stands, the EU are looking for more progress. May is digging in her heels by suggesting there is new a requirement for backstop to a backstop. The backstop to all intents and purposes is the GFA. So May is saying in effect, that the EU are forcing her to put in provisions to protect an international agreement we are signed up to, and if we breech it we risk peace in NI.

After lots of noise it seems that the Cabinet have decided to stick by May. For now.

The EU look like they are talking as if their meeting next month will exclude the UK and just go straight to No Deal planning.

There is also other talk of alternatives to allow the UK to stay in the customs union. But theres not much to that and it still doesn't solve the ERG and the DUP problem.

May is vastly unestimating how much the ERG and the DUP want to break the GFA. Which is a huge misjudgment.

There is also talk of the final final Deadline Day actually being Dec 13. For various reasons its not. Thats 29th March.

So Wednesday is Deadline Day #1. Expect more.

I love tablet. It's much nicer than fudge. I don't bake as I have no willpower. I crochet instead. I have just finished a double bed sized blanket for ds. I will post a pic later if you want.

prettybird · 18/10/2018 09:47

I describe tablet as a cross between toffee and fudge, a sort of crisp fudge that melts in your mouth.

2beesornot2beesthatisthehoney · 18/10/2018 09:47

God the main news is annoying me this morning.
The BBC app headline is about the longer transition , without anythipthing about the WA and that any additional months is off the table if we can’t agree the WA terms.

And the meaningful vote thing. The way things are going if the DUP and others won’t agree to a backstop that the EU can agree to , then there will be no deal. Or no deal or no deal, ......not much to vote on really?

And the timing coincides with a. Stupid consultation. From our Govt which is done so that they can agree to us having crap chicken ( or chicken with added crap ) from the US.which is what the EU has been worried about all along (among other things) and why they want the regulatory backstop.

RedToothBrush · 18/10/2018 09:47

Ok for your benefot 10degrees I admit it. I'm Phil Hammond. Happy now?

Big Choc isn't a liar. I'm very willing to bet, that if I happened to be in the right place at the right time, I'd love to go for a pint/coffee/whatever with Big Choc. And I wouldn't think even twice about it. I know Big Choc is who Big Choc says she is. I have no doubt. There aren't too many I'd say that about with that certainity on MN, but Big Choc is definitely one of them.

Cat doctor

Why thank you kind lady/ sir/ lesbian lamppost :)

Alas, I fear not all of our fellow travellers on these threads share your view though.

I voted to leave a ‘trading bloc’ (because that’s what is according to these threads - we apparently lost no sovereignty) yet when we try to it appears leaving a simple ‘trading bloc’ is much more difficult...

But what would I know, I’m just a ‘thick bigoted leaver/ ‘brexiteer’

Still, these threads amuse.

catdoctor · 18/10/2018 09:52

10degree I think you may have misunderstood me.

PCPlumsTruncheon · 18/10/2018 09:58

10 I could tolerate you if you were funny sometimes but you’re not. You just think you are.
I’m going to go back to ignoring it now

prettybird · 18/10/2018 09:59

Grin catdoctor - went straight over his head Wink

10degreestostarboard · 18/10/2018 10:03

Catdoctor

Ah - your cruelly wound me...

Such is the life of an alien lesbian (BAME) lamppost I suppose...

2beesornot2beesthatisthehoney · 18/10/2018 10:05

Gosh now wondering if 10 is actually my brother

  • Earns 57k ( posted on another thread) so yes privileged
  • Hates Corbyn with a passion

Well if it is my brother, I advise you to just ignore him because I can vouch that my brother is a complete Bellend.

10degreestostarboard · 18/10/2018 10:09

2bees

Does that mean I'm not coming to yours for christmas again this year?

I was hoping for good old british beef.

2beesornot2beesthatisthehoney · 18/10/2018 10:09

But mainly because he loves arguing with pointless arguments although appears at face value to be vaguely intelligent . Yep just like my brother

Anyhow back to the topic , I would like to know what papers / sources you main posters are reading for information.

2beesornot2beesthatisthehoney · 18/10/2018 10:11

Ah it’s not my brother , he never comes to me at Xmas and we never have beef.

Shame I know my brothers address iIRL

2beesornot2beesthatisthehoney · 18/10/2018 10:12

So everyone - you news sources?

2beesornot2beesthatisthehoney · 18/10/2018 10:12

You = your

BlueEyeshadow · 18/10/2018 10:14

Mm, tablet! It took me a long time to realise that my different expectations of fudge from most other people is that we used to get tablet made by a Scottish lady for church fetes, but sold under the name "fudge"!

RedToothBrush · 18/10/2018 10:15

But what would I know, I’m just a ‘thick bigoted leaver/ ‘brexiteer’

I wouldn't call you that.

I would call you someone who is trying to deliberately derail and get people talking about you rather than Brexit. I would call you someone who is trying to slur a regular poster here, by aluding to them being a liar, whilst simulataneously denying thats what they were doing. Except people can do this amazing thing called 'read' and understand inferred points quiet easy. Thats pretty underhand and low tbh.

So on that note.

Sam Coates Times @SamCoatesTimes
Tory MPs told "this is the time for cool, calm heads" in morning email from No10/CCHQ.

The email - a masterclass in the use of the passive tense - admits to implementation extension "for a matter of months" but says it wont be needed and then tells everyone to pipe down

RE: Roger Daltrey ... "Bands will still be able to tour Europe"

I appreciate TL;DR, but that's the kind of I'm-alright-jack attitude of Brexiteers which has inflamed the situation so much. Whilst we should rightly be proud of the UK cultural exports, they pale into insignificance when stacked against the thousands of people that will lose their FoM.

Just goes to show how heroes have feet of clay Sad. At least, in the final analysis, it was Pete Townshend who sang It's only teenage wasteland ...

RedToothBrush · 18/10/2018 10:23

For the benefit of anyone who struggles to read that, it says:

Good morning everyone,

Today's top announcement

Last night, the Prime Minister addressed the European Council in Brussels, setting out the good progress we have made in Brexit negotiations so far, and what needs to be agree to achieve a deal which works for both the UK and EU.

Key Facts: The Prime Minister spoke to leaders about the good progress that has been made since Salzburg both on the Withdrawal Agreement and our future relationship with the EU

There are issues remaining around the Northern Irish backstop, which would come into place to ensure there is no hard border between Northern Ireland and Ireland if the future relationship isn't in place at the end of the implementation period. The original proposal from the EU was one that we could not accept in the UK as it would have created a customs border down the Irish Sea.

Earlier this year, we put forward our own proposal to resolve this issue. A further idea which has emerged - and it is only an idea at this stage - is to create an option to extend the implementation period for a matter of months, and it would only be for a matter of months.

This is not expected to be used because we are working with the EU to ensure we have our future relationship in place by the end of December 2020. In those circumstance, there would be no need for any extension of the implementation period.

Why this matters. We are working hard for a deal this autumn - including both a Withdrawal Agreement and a precise Future Framework - and that continues at pace. This is time for cool, calm heads to prevail with a clear - eyed focus on the few remaining but critical issues that are still to be agreed.

OP posts:
Talkstotrees · 18/10/2018 10:24

I should say via Twitter.

RedToothBrush · 18/10/2018 10:25

What I find fascinating is the Brexiteers who have enormous faith we will be prepared and able to cope with no deal Brexit in 6months time yet simulataneously appear to be worried that we will not be ready for exit at the end of December 2020 and will need to use the backstop or extend the transition period.

Isn't that a lack of faith in Brexit and belief in Britain??

Am I missing something? How does this describe “Why this matters”? What is the point of this exercise at this point in time?

RedToothBrush · 18/10/2018 10:29

Because thats May talking to the MPs at a level which matches their understanding and work ethic when it comes to researching Brexit issues.
