Westministenders: Talks Walk Out?

We are now on the countdown to whether we get a backstop Withdrawal Deal. May is hoping to get the EU to backdown on this saying that we will stay in the customs union until a deal is agreed on NI. That would mean come 29th March, we'd have no transistion period, but we'd still have a hard border in NI because we were out of the single market. And if the EU don't agree to it we are into the chances of accidental Brexit being sky high. The only way out would be revoking a50. May has hinted that if Tory MPs don't give her support we could end up with no brexit at all - whether she means revoking a50 or Beano isn't clear.

So onward to 18th October...

Tesco are gambling on an event which leads to a higher than normal demand for bulk buying

Well, I do sincerely hope that none of our resident Leavers are even slightly thinking of gracing Tesco's bulk-buying shelves with their custom.

RedToothBrush · 09/10/2018 18:03

Who has a Tesco Club card?

That'd be a way to monitor who is buying more than their rations...

Data protection law can be overrided in the interests of national security, I believe.

Who are you going to complain to after Brexit for abuses of that anyway? The ECJ?

It's only 11 rodent hairs. Now if it was 12 that would be a bit ticklish on the palate but 11 isn't a problem surely.

Loving DGRs Arlene refrain. What I want to know is are Sinn Fein popping over for a chat too or have they been? Seems a bit unbalanced otherwise.

woman11017 · 09/10/2018 18:17

imo, Calling it "resilience" is deliberate planning to blame the victims who become unemployed, homeless ... or worse
It's a big (earner for trainers) thing in schools. Pernicious.

O'Neill visited Barnier last week Lonely , it was in the Belfast Telegraph.

frankiestein401 · 09/10/2018 18:18

re LAs and contingency/emergency/disaster planning.
The rule of thumb is that even if you have one then if you havent rehearsed it in the last 12 months then you dont have a plan.
I fully expect the Grenfell inquiry to establish that RBKC didn't even have a major incident plan, let alone failing to invoke one. Thats an epic fail in itself.

Creepy Brexiter MP foiled .. for now

You may remember this case being brought

https://www.theneweuropean.co.uk/top-stories/university-of-worcester-wins-case-after-conservative-mp-chris-heaton-harris-demands-details-of-brexit-lecturers-1-5729663

A university has won a year-long fight
sparked after a Conservative MP and leading Brexiteer wrote to universities across the UK
asking for the names of lecturers teaching courses on Brexit and the content of their lessons. Confused

WHO Conference delegates refused UK visas because they don't have enough income or bank balance 🤦🏻‍♀️

https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2018/oct/09/who-voices-alarm-academics-denied-visas-to-visit-uk-conference

Fears over immigration policy’s impact as at least 10 delegates experience problems

The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed alarm about the impact of the UK government’s immigration policy on international academic cooperation after several foreign scholars were denied visas to attend a conference.
..
Dr Masoud Dara, a communicable diseases coordinator at the WHO, said: “International events are better organised in countries where the invited participants can more easily attend. The tough immigration policies may have impact on academic cooperation, if specific measures are not put in place to facilitate scientists’ travel to and from various countries.”

< i.e. the WHO will stop holding conferences in the UK >

Notice a common theme ? Hmm
The govt are either idiots and / or trying to isolate us from the non-Anglosphere academic world

It's not just EU citizens that the door is being close to either. It's those from the rest of the world, which Leavers are so keen to tell us that they welcome. Obviously, they don't influence the Home Office.

trying to isolate us from the non-Anglosphere academic world
It's a cultural revolution all right. Sad

Think it was Friday mother that O'Neill went (with SDLP and all the human members of the invisible assembly)
I think the M26 is just closed at night, Kent CC Highways has more?

Cheeky Sturgeon ! Grin

I bet pretty laughed at this quip:

In 2014, we were told we had to reject independence to protect our place in Europe.
Today, we face warnings of medicines shortages, grounded aeroplanes, gridlock at ports and a haemorrhaging of investment.

They’ve even appointed a Minister for Food Supplies, for goodness sake.
We haven’t had one of those since Winston Churchill was Prime Minister.
Conference

It brings to mind those immortal Churchill words about the sacrifices of the RAF in World War 2 -
“Never was so much owed by so many to so few.”

Well when the history books tell the story of this Tory government, selfishly driving the UK towards a hard Brexit just to appease its own ideologues, the verdict will be damning.

Never has so much been lost by so many to satisfy so few.

BREAKING: Ireland's deputy PM Simon Coveney says deal unlikely until November.
Tells reporters in Dublin: "I suspect the November meeting will probably be needed as well as October". Also says British backstop proposal unlikely to be "published".
6:00 PM - Oct 9, 2018

< so long as there is a damn deal >

1tisILeClerc · 09/10/2018 18:58

I thought the November meeting was dependent on at least a fairly successful October meeting.

A friend who lives a few miles from me visited this morning. She was telling me there is now only very limited availability for train tickets to London on the morning of 20th October. Apparently, this is very unusual. This is a Leave area. I’m hoping this is an indication of a change in sentiment. Am I grasping at straws?

1tisILeClerc · 09/10/2018 19:00

It's beginning to sound like Idi Amin turfing 'qualified' people out of Uganda.

'Neo-nazi' couple named baby after Hitler

A couple accused of being in a banned British Neo-Nazi group named their baby after Hitler, a court has heard.

Adam Thomas, 22, and Claudia Patatas, 38, from Banbury, gave their child the middle name Adolf in honour of the infamous dictator, prosecutors claim.

Jurors heard the couple were pictured with a convicted racist and "vehement Nazi" as he held a Swastika flag and performed a racist salute over their baby.

Both deny being members of the group.

Barnaby Jameson, prosecuting, told jurors at Birmingham Crown Court that National Action was "so extreme and violent" it was banned in 2016.

"Given that the child was born almost a year after National Action was banned, you may think the use of the name 'Adolf' - even as a middle name - was of significance," he said.

The U.S. is threatening to block the U.K. from a 46-nation public procurement agreement, a move that would deny British companies from accessing a near $2 trillion-dollar marketplace after leaving the European Union, according to two officials with knowledge of the situation

Best before' labels going on pre packed fruit and veg. No one gets sick from eating rotten fruit and veg, fortunately.

This isn't true weirdly. I'm always quite cavalier about lettuce etc until DH told me off. He works in an area involving food liability payouts and says lettuce, Vegetables and leafy greens are a common source of food poisoning, especially those eaten raw.

Fruit and veg cause a lot of the food poisoning outbreaks, particularly lettuce, celery and tomatoes.

Vegetables and leafy greens can become contaminated with harmful bacteria, such as E. coli, Salmonella and Listeria. This can occur across various stages of the supply chain.

"Contamination can occur from unclean water and dirty runoff, which can leach into the soil that fruits and vegetables are grown in."
"It can also occur from dirty processing equipment and unhygienic food preparation practices. Leafy greens are especially risky because they are often consumed raw ."

In fact, between 1973 and 2012, 85% of the food poisoning outbreaks in the US that were caused by leafy greens such as cabbage, kale, lettuce and spinach were traced back to food prepared in a restaurant or catering facility.

I bought my train ticket this afternoon. Last time the train was packed, although I couldn't say that they were all going to the demo. Some were, one gave me a whole load of Bollocks to Brexit stickers.

The three Oxford coaches are fully booked, so people are being told to go by the normal coaches to London or by train.

Those CS jobs look interesting. If it was 3 in each location then that is a very substantial budget. It's very possible that it is 3 in total though- CS jobs is very restrictive in what you can put in and doesn't let you explain complex options. I might give them a ring tomorrow and ask!

One thing that might happen is that there is a sudden need to transfer civil servants to other departments if it becomes clear there aren't enough people to do the work caused by brexit. Eg HMRC might need a sudden influx of people. It happened in a similar way with foot and mouth- sudden urgent need for extra people and no time to recruit.
