That we don't fully comprehend the impact, Brexit will have in us.

JustCallMeDave · 23/09/2018 15:14

I fear that is going to have a catastophic effect on our economy.

I worry that people from other countries who are in need and vulnerable will no longer be welcome in our country.

I worry and am angry that the people who voted for Brexit did it in ignorance and were deceived, that the ensuing economic chaos will hit them the hardest.

I worry that following Brexit and the financial impact we will be open to horrendous politicians like Jacob Rees-Mogg getting into power because people are desperate for something different/better/a way out of the mess we’re in.

I honestly can’t think about it too much, it’s so frightening and depressing.

YeOldeTrout · 23/09/2018 15:25

I'm neurotic about financial security so anything that suggests we might end up a lot poorer, having to worry about pennies, stresses me out. Esp. if DC might live the same.

I guess that's pretty good, if all I strongly worry about is money. I can sort potatoes, not too proud for that if comes to it. And I might be dead in 30 yrs so then won't be worrying about DC.

There is nothing I like about Brexit.

Whatsnewwithyou · 23/09/2018 15:30

I worry about financial collapse, no jobs, massive inflation, people hungry and desperate, lack of money to spend on public services including policing, and a rise in criminal gangs. And loss of the NHS due to no money to pay for it. And all this leading to a rise in the far right.

PineappleSunrise · 23/09/2018 15:47

I don't think that most of the people who voted for Brexit have the faintest idea what's going to be done to them in the guise of "freeing" them from the EU.

There are going to be a lot of angry people flailing around by this time next year. So far the government's only concern about this seems to be to find ways to get the angry people to blame everyone except the government for what's about to happen.

coulditbeforever · 23/09/2018 15:48

I believe there is a lot of uncertainty and this is making people, banks etc nervous..... do you not think 'we' hate change?

The fact that the Government has 'gagged' significant parts of industry and possibly the press, and who knows who else to prevent 'panic' in the early stages of this fiasco, might have some very nasty repercussions.
The more 'tricky' technical preparation papers haven't been released yet which is one thing but utterances and ideas from the likes of the Home Secretary suggest things could be very nasty and decisive very soon after leaving.

1tisILeClerc · 23/09/2018 15:59

Sorry, it should have said divisive.

Mistigri · 23/09/2018 16:01

Me personally? Loss of rights (Briton in Europe), loss of right to work, potentially the loss of my job (my employer is a large UK manufacturer at the sharp end of JIT supply chains).

If it really all goes tits up I'd be concerned for my 80-something mum who lives alone. Still considering whether I can/ should get her out of the UK before brexit day.

SusanWalker · 23/09/2018 16:14

From a totally selfish point of view I am anxious about the economic consequences. It's pretty much universally agreed that any kind of brexit is going to reduce tax take and increase prices. Even if it's not an almighty crash a moderate reduction will adversely affect me and my kids.

I live solely on benefits as a lone parent of two children, one of whom has a disability. A reduction in tax take would inevitably lead to greater reduction in benefits and even more pressure on disability assessors to find disabled people fit for work. It would also lead to further cuts in services and schools. My sons sen department has already had its funding stripped to the bone. We had to wait nearly twelve weeks for his medication review at camhs because they are so short of staff, despite having to attend a and e twice because he was actively trying to kill himself.

If services are cut even further I worry about what will happen to my son and others like him. I also worry about my dd who is really bright and has a great future ahead of her, and how she has enough barriers already, what with living in one of the most poverty stricken areas of the UK, having a disabled brother and the limits that has put on her life although I have always tried my hardest not to let it.

I know people will think well tough, it's what happens when you rely on the state but I never asked to be in this position and neither did my kids. If I could work i would.

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 23/09/2018 16:42

There is nothing to like about Brexit. All the wrong people are cheering.

Bombardier25966 · 23/09/2018 16:51

I fear riots. People that think Brexit is going to change their lives - less immigration, more jobs, more money - are going to get a very nasty shock. We've already seen how far right protests end up, with violence against the emergency services and criminal damage.

I volunteer with refugees, who are also predominantly Muslim. I know they are fearful of the repercussions and I don't know who will stand up and protect them, the police don't have the resources to do so.

I do think we're at the point where this is no longer scaremongering or exaggerated. Sad times.

HollowTalk · 23/09/2018 16:54

There's absolutely nothing good about Brexit. It's going to be disastrous.

Bombardier25966 · 23/09/2018 16:55
  • Totally unwarranted repercussions - neither Muslims or refugees are the cause of the problems in this country. Austerity is killing our public services and punishing the most vulnerable, at the same time that corporates are paying less tax through rare cuts and loopholes.
eurochick · 23/09/2018 16:56

Loss of work. I'm a lawyer and part of my practice involves an EU area.

Economic effects. I think these will be pretty dire.

Loss of opportunities to study and work abroad. I did both and it hugely benefited my understanding of the world and exposed me to cultures I knew little about (eg at one point I houseshared with a Lithuanian - I knew little of the country before that).

Loss of influence in the world. We are a small country. We no longer have an empire. Our influence is waning anyway, and without being part of the EU we are a pretty insignificant voice on the world stage.

A more remote but terrifying fear is Russia capitalising on a weaker and divided Europe.

HollowTalk · 23/09/2018 17:01

Yes, Russia is LOVING the idea of Brexit.

1tisILeClerc · 23/09/2018 17:04

I suppose if the UK leaves the EU really hard, there is less incentive for the EU to 'defend' the UK who, as according to leavers are the 'bees knees'.

LaBelleSausage · 23/09/2018 18:05

I’m really concerned about what it might mean for the peace process in Northern Ireland

AlexaShutUp · 23/09/2018 18:08

So many things I'm worried about, but above all, the economy, jobs and the impact on Northern Ireland.

Bearbehind · 23/09/2018 18:10

Not much on the 'like' side? 🤔

prettybird · 23/09/2018 18:40

What do I fear about Brexit?: that the damage to the economy will mean that there will be even less money available to support our welfare state and to look after the poorest and most vulnerable in society. Even if the UK did have a government that cared Sad That the NHS (including Scotland's fully devolved NHS) will be sacrificed in order to do a deal with Trump's USA Sad Angry

What do I like about Brexit?: that it will bring about Scottish independence sooner Smile; that it might finally lance the boil of UKIP, the ERG and the far right once the devastation that they sow is reaped.

But given what I fear, I'd rather wait longer and not sacrifice the poorest and most vulnerable in England for the sake of a quicker Scottish independence. Although maybe if the English see Scotland thriving within the EU, they'll come to their senses sooner and run UKIP and the ERG out of town.

bellinisurge · 23/09/2018 18:46

Nothing to like. It's a shitshow. But all my family are dual British/Irish citizens so I have the uncharacteristic pleasure of thinking " fuck you" to the idiots that have done this. But you don't know me so you don't know it's uncharacteristic. The "fuck you" doesn't change, thought.

RaggieDolls · 23/09/2018 19:06

For me in the short term I worry about DH's job security and ability to travel freely to work in Europe as he currently does. I worry about my DCs growing up with a more limited world view than I had at their age.

In the longer term if it's all as disastrous as it seems it might be we will have to leave the UK. I am heartbroken at the thought of potentially leaving my friends, family and my own job but we couldn't stay if DH lost his job. He has an extremely marketable and niche skill so we'd be ok. I don't want to leave but I couldn't let my DC on a sinking ship when we have the means to get off.

I can't think of anything I'm looking forward to. I guess i want the speculation to be over so I can start to process the reality of it. I'm not looking forward to that at all... at the moment I pin all my hopes on something happening to stop it.

McWilde · 23/09/2018 19:47

I fear that the UK will be left behind.
I think the global challenges we'll face in the future, trade wars, the economy, climate change etc would be better dealt with if we were in a Bloc.
And also that the increasing understandings in technology and science will pass the Uk by as we'll be too busy dealing with a trashed economy to invest.

JustCallMeDave · 23/09/2018 20:23

@prettybird this ‘What do I like about Brexit?: that it will bring about Scottish independence sooner’ is another one of the reasons I hate Brexit Sad. I totally understand why Scotland will want to leave, having voted against Brexit but it makes me sad to my bones to think we will no longer the united kingdom. Not only will have lost our membership of Europe but we’re going to lose that too.
