Benjaminsbuttons - your post is brilliant. We do live in a reality tv type world and if the issues had been presented in that way then the message would get across.

Benjaminbuttonschild · 26/09/2018 10:15

Haha I went off on a tangent last night with that post. I wonder if politics was made more 'shiny' and reality tv-like, would people bother to educate themselves on it better?

DeloresJaneUmbridge · 26/09/2018 10:28

What I am looking forward and hoping for is the older members of my family who all voted Leave live long enough to feel the effects of their decision.

All now rabidly defending their decision as are one or two others,

1tisILeClerc · 26/09/2018 11:25

@Delores
With a 'no deal' I think April 1st 2019 may be long enough to spot a few changes.

Satsumaeater · 26/09/2018 18:03

And they introduced employment tribunal fees at a disproportionately high level

Yes I had forgotten about that - very good point!

Which laws do you want to see repealed? Leavers can never think of any

I can and I voted to remain. The stupid non risk based money laundering regulations. They don't help and affect the wrong people.

Other than that...I'm struggling. Oh - there is an obvious one - not being able to take VAT off sanitary protection. It would be good for that to be repealed.

Ta1kinpeace · 26/09/2018 18:14

I am MLR registered
The EU rules are not too bad
the UK gold plated ones are a nightmare

a bit like the UK gold plating CAP payments into the RPA and screwing them up

Whitehall is the problem, not the EU

YeOldeTrout · 26/09/2018 20:51

I thought of a potential positive(!)

You know how we have to click something about cookies on EVERY sodding website we visit? but if you don't click yes then often you can't even look at the site? Oh, and how the GDPR means loads of American websites don't load b/c of legal liabilities?

Just sod it, I'm fed up with all that. I don't want all the stupid pointless extra clicking & being blocked all the time. Undo those EU regulations. I can live without those supposed 'protections'.

Ta1kinpeace · 26/09/2018 20:56

The state of personal data protection in the USA is NOT something to look forward to.
Providers able to sell your whole browsing history with your knowledge and no comeback
no thanks

blackcurrantjam · 26/09/2018 21:01

Looking forward to:
Being European but not part of EU
Being out of Deutschbank shit storm
Encouraging other member states to get out of the EU and sort themselves out
Trading with other nations
Not supporting EU protectionism anymore which could help Africa to be wealthier
Setting our own fishing policies
Setting our own farming policies
Possibly voting in a good Labour govt if they ever sort themselves out and then them not being subject to EU rules
Sticking two fingers up to Juncker ha
Not supporting the EU megastate - I mean Blair wanted the commissioner Job - ha need I say more
Having more control over immigration
Getting out of the EUs hair and letting them do whatever it is they want to do
Not putting my name to shit austerity EU policies regarding Greece
Working with the EU as part of Europe, not as a member state - 51 countries in Europe, 28 in EU

Theres lots to like as far as I'm concerned. Just hope the Tories stand firm and don't bottle it. All the leave voters I know, know quite a bit about the whole thing and had followed the debate for ages, watched everything, read loads, took it seriously... and I think the plan btw was vote out then vote the tories out .. but labour are being well crap so....

Ta1kinpeace · 26/09/2018 21:13

blackcurrant
How will any of those affect you on a day to day basis ?

Trading with other nations
Who do we not trade with at present?

Not supporting EU protectionism anymore which could help Africa to be wealthier
Most African countries pay no tariffs into the EU. What will change?

blackcurrantjam · 26/09/2018 21:21

1 I'm more of a big picture person.. Some of it won't affect me except for in a knock on effect type way ... im less concerned about 'holidaying' without visa for example although I'm sure we will be able to lol
2 sorry should say trade with other nations on different terms / own terms
3 eu protectionism very much affects Africa - germany make lots money off coffee for example because of their tariffs not on/on green/roasted coffee - totally unfair imo... typical bleurgh no thx not putting my name to that

Ta1kinpeace · 26/09/2018 21:25

Germany has no different tariff on coffee than any other part of the EU or the UK

Which countries should we change our trading terms with if we leave the customs Union?

What three things will Brexit make better in your day to day life?

1tisILeClerc · 26/09/2018 21:29

{Sticking two fingers up to Juncker ha }
That's a very grown up attitude.

blackcurrantjam · 26/09/2018 21:30

1 we can change that if we are out of eu
2 that's up to us / successive govt
3 I didn't vote for better, I voted for freedom

blackcurrantjam · 26/09/2018 21:32

Add in 'necessarily, before vote for better.. because it might be

And anyway I told u, I didn't necessarily vote for 'just me' either Hmm

Peregrina · 26/09/2018 21:32

I suppose African countries will have to pay tariffs to us if we crash out? How will that help them?

We have so far made a complete mess of our immigration policies. We have not used the legislation we had to remove EU citizens who could not support themselves, and then we have seen the disgraceful treatment of the Windrush generation, who we invited to come here and have worked and contributed their taxes for 40 odd years. So why should the Government suddenly have an efficiency transplant and manage to control immigration?

MiddlingMum · 26/09/2018 21:36

The UK is likely to be a disaster; it's worrying, depressing and frightening.

On a personal level, a couple of my best friends are likely to move abroad as they feel unwanted here now.

However, it may be such a disaster that it puts all other EU countries off the idea for themselves which would be a good thing for them.

blackcurrantjam · 26/09/2018 21:39

1tislLeClerc perfectly possible for rebellion to be grown up. Interesting how quick you're trying to discredit my reasons. Didn't take long did it lol

Ta1kinpeace · 26/09/2018 21:40

blackcurrant
THere is no import duty to the EU on African coffee beans
madb.europa.eu/madb/euTariffs.htm?productCode=090111&country=TZ
So the UK leaving the EU will have no impact on African coffee growers

Peregrina · 26/09/2018 21:41

Would someone really vote for 'Freedom' if it made their lives worse? Most people want and hope to make better lives for themselves and their children.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 26/09/2018 21:41

What do I like? Well I love the ‘Brrrr’ because I love all the seasons and it reminds me of the chilly winter. What do I fear? the ‘exit’ because I hate goodbyes.
After a couple of glasses of white, there’s every possibility I’ve missed the point.

Ta1kinpeace · 26/09/2018 21:42

If we leave the whole customs union we will be bound by WTO terms
480 unelected bureaucrats in Geneva
is that really better ?

1tisILeClerc · 26/09/2018 21:44

Blackcurrent.
I am glad you are happy with the delusion you (probably) voted for.

YeOldeTrout · 26/09/2018 21:48

I was reading up on the EU trading relationship with Africa. (For instance) EU has subsidies that make EU-produced sugar much cheaper than African-produced sugar. So removing those tariffs would make sugar cheaper.... and make growing sugar beet in UK uneconomical. Is that ok?

EU puts a tariff on processed foods (like 7.7% on cocoa powder), but this is reduced to zero under the GSP for most big African producers (2.6% for roasted coffee). Even if you think 7.7% is too harsh a burden (odd that it could be, given that everything in Africa is likely to be cheaper than in EU), the real problems with Africa developing its own food processing industry is lack of investment in infrastructure. The Chinese are trying to fix that.

Twitter thread about exporting ground coffee into the EU.

YeOldeTrout · 26/09/2018 21:51

Good moment to bring up the WTO: The Trump administration is hellbent on crippling it. Fine as long as you don't want a way to resolve any trade disputes.
