After disaster after Salzberg and a very predictable humilation over the Chequers Deal which the ERG reject, moderate Brexiteers reject, Remainers reject and the EU reject....

May does a press conference...

...which is delayed by a power shortage inside No. 10.

And....

People from England are thick as pig shit when it comes to NI politics.

And frankly I include myself in that.

I should know more. The fact I don't is reflective of the absence of NI from our telly boxes in drama, news and just general culture.

It's a culture shock to visit. Lovely place but very different. More so than anywhere else.

https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2018/sep/21/brexit-chequers-salzburg-irish-sea-customs-union

... The EU, for its part, knows it holds all the cards and recognises the danger of giving ground.

Its priority is to accommodate Dublin, not London.

It also concludes that a government so determined to leave must believe it can look after itself.
< the govt may believe that >

Brussels has no reason or incentive to make any better offer.

The government has never understood the Brexit process and therefore has always botched it.

It expects the EU to treat the UK both as an equally powerful third country, and as a member state still deserving the EU’s protection.

It is neither.
And so in a battle of red lines, the UK will lose.
That is the most brutal lesson of all.

Looking at tomorrow's headlines I need a LOT more GinGinGinGinGinGinGinGinGinAngry

RedToothBrush · 21/09/2018 23:21

Aha I believe we have the REAL reason for May's speech and clues to the target audience contained in this tweet:

Christopher Hope @christopherhope
, @Telegraph splash tomorrow: Theresa May heading for massive Brexit Monday. In the morning David Davis and Boris Johnson unveil a rival Brexit plan; in the afternoon her Cabinet will demand a Plan B to replace Chequers. And Cabinet ministers might quit if she doesn't.

This reply in response nails what that's going to be

Andrew James @drandrewjames
Boris's plan will be a chest-thumping article in Monday's Telegraph, right?

So on Monday, we get to do all this again, except led by Johnson and Davies.

Lots more EU bashing, talk of cake and no deal. With some May bashing thrown in for good measure.

You have the weekend to replenish your gin. You may need lots for the coming fortnight.

TBH so do I, even if I have an English and ROI element to things I know I don't get it. However I'm not as naive as others at least.

Woohoo, not. If they could hold off until Tuesday that'd be great as I try to fast on Mondays

MyBrexitUnicornDied · 21/09/2018 23:27

Is Boris likely to come up with an actual plan? It doesn’t seem his style somehow?

What would he go for? Try and sell the public a Norway style deal?

woman11017 · 21/09/2018 23:30

So many strange things.

British public to be given knife, bomb and shooting first aid training for terror attacks

I must try this gin stuff Smile Night folks.

I'm ignoring Monday news then it'll be twaffle.

RedToothBrush · 21/09/2018 23:33

No he's going to do exactly what May did today. Lie, shout, blame the EU, stamp his feet and waaahhh about it not being fair.

Whilst criticising the government of the last 27 months for its poor handling of Brexit. With no shred of irony or hypocrisy or acknowledgement of his own abject failure

It other words lots of noise coming out of an orifice but not much that is of substance. Unless you are counting shit.

Is this Mays plan? Throw her tantrum about the meanies in the EU before Boris can do it first. I don’t know who I despise more the bloody Tory’s or the so called opposition.

OlennasWimple · 22/09/2018 00:46

Looks like Ian Paisley Jnr might have company on the Parliamentary naughty step: www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2018/09/21/jeremy-corbyns-allies-drawing-emergency-plans-amid-fears-may/

Corbyn is thought to have failed to declare at least three overseas trips, which could lead to him being suspended...

13luckyblackcats · 22/09/2018 01:05

Interesting times. weeps

May's Brexit plan has NEVER been about the EU. It has always been about pleasing the domestic audience. The EU are just an inconvenience to that and she gets upset when they don't play along with her game.

Everything has been about negotiating with her own party not the EU.

Theresa May is heading for a showdown with her Cabinet next week
when ministers will call for a “Plan B” alternative to her Chequers Brexit deal.

The Cabinet meeting on Monday, which was due to discuss migration policy,
will now be dominated by Mrs May’s Salzburg humiliation.

The Prime Minister will be urged to offer an alternative to the proposal,
agreed at her country residence in July, to keep the UK tied to the EU after Brexit
– or face resignations.

One source said: “Monday is the crunch point.
That’s when every Cabinet minister will have to look again and reassess like Boris [Johnson] and David Davis did.”

HPFA · 22/09/2018 07:18

Loving that Macron thread. Not sure if it's backfired for the OP

That was someone in the PM's team trying to see if Remainers were generally buying the "bullying EU" narrative.

Anyone see Barry Gardiner's Tweet? "Don't interrupt your enemy when they're making a mistake" Thus the total silence we've seen today from the Labour frontbench. This is the politics we have now when any pretence that they might have a responsibility to the country rather than the obsessions of their own party members has long gone.

HesterThrale · 22/09/2018 07:21

I thought Boris and others were quiet. They're plotting.
There might be a bloodbath even before the conference.

bellinisurge · 22/09/2018 07:43

Corbynistas are in love with the chaos. They will try to be the last man standing and deliver us from evil.
It's straight out of the political extremist playbook.
If they really cared they would be fighting to stop it but, just as their Remain campaign was non-existent, so are there attempts to fight this madness.
You only ever see Keir Starmer on TV because he has his own agenda to raise his profile if Corbyn tanks. He's got his own playbook which, frankly, is fair enough.

ShinyElena · 22/09/2018 07:50

If Labour's shinies don't form a new party, who will I vote for?

BigChocFrenzy · 22/09/2018 07:56

Back in 1975, when I went on "Yes" marches, those opposed to joining were on the hard left and hard right.

That has never changed:
An isolated Britain - and maybe soon a crashed Britain - is a golden opportunity for them.

Each side know that in ordinary circs the public won't vote or acquiesce to their extreme vision for Britain
but chaos, public anger, mass civil disorder would create a once in a century opportunity

Major disruptions, especially the 2 world wars, have resulted in abrupt social & political changes
So their thinking is logical, if chilling for the rest of us.
