After disaster after Salzberg and a very predictable humilation over the Chequers Deal which the ERG reject, moderate Brexiteers reject, Remainers reject and the EU reject....

May does a press conference...

...which is delayed by a power shortage inside No. 10.

And....

My DH has irritating conspiracy theories. The royal fam murdered Diana, that sort of thing- he thinks a deal has already been concluded behind closed doors.

At this point in the game, why not ?

I pointed out that what if it didn't get a Parliamentry vote? Also it would be a sizeable document and there'd be leaks unless TM /Tusk/Barnier tapped it out themselves on their iPads.

To be honest if nothing else, the past few months haven't really been parliaments finest hour. They've already got tyre tracks all across their backs - what's one more indignity ?

DGRossetti · 27/09/2018 16:47

Maybe the most staunch remainers would support Boris, I think other remainers wouldn't, and I put myself in this category.

"The Boris Conundrum" ? (you need to be very careful if you are using assistive software and words with "c" and "u" near "Boris" Grin)

It's a real point. Maybe it's part of the silence. I'd guess Boris needs certainty now before he acts. Which leads me to idly wonder if the most improbable outcome - a Johnson/Gove alliance putting Gove in as PM with Johnson as standard bearer might work Hmm.

Gove has worked very hard to keep his Leaver credentials up to date, so has some clout with the moderate leavers who must be as desperate to stop May as the ERG.

I suspect Javid would throw his lot in with "most likely to win" Hmm If that were the case, wither Hunt (another name to be careful with if you are using assistive software ...)

There must be a board game in this, if not a West End musical. Does anyone have Tim Minchins number ?

RedToothBrush · 27/09/2018 16:48

May would have to be willing to swallow a lot of pride with her red lines.

It doesn't fit her personality or track record.

That's why I'm not with it as a conspiracy theory.

I'm more on board with the one about no deal to cover up May's fuck ups over money laundering at the Home Office. Not forgetting Phil.

That's if she remains PM. These are Tories let's not forget.

Violetparis · 27/09/2018 16:55

DGRossetti would you vote for Boris if he came out for Remain ? It is indeed a conundrum though a hypothetical, unlikely one.

DGRossetti · 27/09/2018 17:05

DGRossetti would you vote for Boris if he came out for Remain ?

Well within the peculiarities of the UK electoral system ....

I will vote for an MP who stands to stop Brexit. If that is by means of a final referendum where a failure to back whatever deal the government puts forward reverts to remain, then so be it.

If I don't have that choice, I haven't yet thought any further. Too many things to chance.

But - let me be clear - if that meant voting for a Tory candidate under a Tory party led by Boris (or anyone else) who stands to stop this madness, then yes. I would. It would hurt. But not as much as Brexit will. That much is plain.

lonelyplanetmum · 27/09/2018 17:06

I also think there's an element of not liking failing at anything- so still motivated by meeting the goal of reducing immigration to a dozen people or so a week.

mostdays · 27/09/2018 17:18

yes. I would. It would hurt. But not as much as Brexit will.

My thinking exactly. I would vote Tory for the first (and probably last) time in my life to stop Brexit. I can vote to get a Tory government out again in 5 years: I probably won't get a chance to vote to go back in to the EU for a lot longer than that.

What I was thinking of posting verbatim, except I was driving.

prettybird · 27/09/2018 18:02

Had an argument a discussion with my dad as I was driving him to the airport.

He was horrified that I said that if I lived in England, I didn't think I could bring myself to vote Labour unless and until they definitively came out at the every least for a proper new referendum that included Remain as an option. In his view, that meant that I was accepting Tory "rule".

We didn't fall out completely, because in Scotland we do have a real Remain alternative Grin and we arrived at the airport Wink

World trade's top court close to breakdown as U.S. blocks another judge

GENEVA (Reuters) - The supreme court of world trade is close to breakdown after the United States turned down a last-ditch petition to reappoint one of the four remaining judges at the World Trade Organization.

What do we think Trump's ultimate intention is??

I would vote Labour for the first and probably last time in my life if they either stopped Brexit or gave me another ref with the option of remaining. I think this is so important for the future of the country I would also grit my teeth and bore for Boris if need be, urggh.

BlueEyeshadow · 27/09/2018 19:19

I was interested to note that the Radio 2 news just now said that Jo Cox was "murdered by a neo-Nazi terrorist", which I don't think is a form of words I've heard them use before...

Quietrebel, THIS is YOUR fault:

Apparently BoJos ex wife was the real brexiteer in that relationship. Make of that what you will.

Also paper sticks make a good alternative to kindling wood. We used to make them as kids for the fire to save money.

Men are not capable of having their own opinion? And especially not responsibility for that opinion.

Wrt money laundering:
Danske will struggle to convince anyone it was completely oblivious. Warning lights on its Estonian branch, which it had acquired by taking over Finland's Sampo Bank, were flashed by the local regulator and even the Russian central bank as far back as 2007. Plans to migrate the Baltic banking activities onto Danske's main IT systems were binned as too expensive – even though the dodgy "non-resident portfolio" often generated over two-thirds of the Estonian division's annual pre-tax profit and in 2011 Estonia generated 10 percent of overall group pre-tax profit. Over a fifth of incoming funds were from Russia.

mathanxiety · 27/09/2018 20:17

"I absolutely appreciate and understand the point you're making about as you're making decisions and looking ahead to what the future holds and at the moment, there is that uncertainty about what the future will hold in terms of Brexit."
Theresa May, answering Steve Schwarzman's question about how bad it could get post Brexit. (See RTB's post for the full statement of TM).

So in other words, 'rhubarb, waffle, rhubarb, waffle, we don't know but you should trust us anyway'.

This will go down like a bucket of cold sick.

She is grossly incompetent if she wasn't prepared to give some glib positive answer to this very predictable question. The answer she gave was appalling.

Going back to the water, I bought a Big Berkey water purifier and an 800l water butt this summer. My DH is on board with stocking up; I can't persuade him that looking for a job abroad is a good idea.
