After disaster after Salzberg and a very predictable humilation over the Chequers Deal which the ERG reject, moderate Brexiteers reject, Remainers reject and the EU reject....

May does a press conference...

...which is delayed by a power shortage inside No. 10.

And....

George Osborne's Standard would be a joy to read!

I think in any post-May government, Gorgeous George would need to be given a seat at the table. I don't think for a second his political ambitions died with Brexit. He's quite cannily left the tent (so he could piss into it) and is - ironically - one of the few able Tories who comes to law "with clean hands".

Also I wonder what part the Standard (see previous story ...) might play in the rehabilitation of Johnson the Avenger ?

DGRossetti · 27/09/2018 15:28

There was an item on Facebook earlier about a couple who got wrestled to the floor and arrested by police in Tesco for trying to buy more bottles of water than allowed.

Stocking up on bottled water does suggest they're Brexiteers Hmm

1tisILeClerc · 27/09/2018 15:34

Slight vision of BoJo in a tight black catsuit,,,, NO! Sorry, wrong avengers.

1tisILeClerc · 27/09/2018 15:36

Britain in March needing water? What is it that drops out of the sky then, especially at that time of the year? Being a bit more conventional, you could always use the tap.

RedToothBrush · 27/09/2018 15:39

How much water that comes out of your tap requires electricity to pump it?

And man power to sanitise it.

Just y'know, saying.

(better to save your empty plastic bottles... And fill from the tap mind)

DGR
Andy Street sounds like the perfect Tory leader.
DH said he might take me out for our anniversary in Birmingham this weekend (depends on childcare). He thinks we might meet Osborne. Where is he planning to take me?!

DGRossetti · 27/09/2018 15:49

See RTB is showing the imagination needed when I suggested on another forum (to general less-than-polite comments Grin) that storing water is a key prepping things to do. Because it's clear the majority of people take it for granted it'll be on tap.

It's sobering to reflect on now natural disasters lead to so much subsequent death. Disruption to clean water is one of the biggest causes.

If you are prepping and planning on catching water for drinking, make sure you have a plan to sterilise it (bearing in mind electricity might not be available). Also make sure your catchment system is clean - a lot of people seem to be happy to drink water with pigeon shit in it from their gutters.

And if you have a property with a well, it might be an idea to keep it quiet from now on, and hope folks forget you ever mentioned it.

Mind you, to read some weather forecasts, shortage of water will be the least of some peoples worries, come winter.

RedToothBrush · 27/09/2018 15:50

Tory Party conference... So if you go anywhere posh, it will be over run by Tories.

I hope your DH has booked.

Osborne used to go to an Italian deli in Knutsford. It was lovely.

It went bust.

Doesn't this just encapsulate this government's attitude to the north and their blithe misuse of public funds to hide their contempt for all of us?

This is Birmingham ....

it will be over run by Tories.

keep the rats away though.

RedToothBrush · 27/09/2018 15:54

Do you have vaseline and cotton wool to help start a fire? To boil the water. Cos matches are crap and flints are surprisingly difficult to use.

Do you know how to filter water?

OP posts:
MyBrexitGoesOnHoliday · 27/09/2018 15:55

Is there a limit on how much water you can buy these days???
Learning everyday.

DGRossetti · 27/09/2018 15:55

Apropos of nothing in particular, Germany chosen over Turkey to host 2024 UEFA cup ... first time as a united Germany.

ShinyElena · 27/09/2018 15:57

I do not expect to be able to go out really. Even going to cinema or for a drink would be nice. We do not do posh normally.
I saw Osborne at Birmingham New Street once before it was redeveloped. He looked so out of place.

DGRossetti · 27/09/2018 16:02

I saw Osborne at Birmingham New Street once before it was redeveloped. He looked so out of place.

Piling on the irony, it was only the above-tracks bit of New Street that was redeveloped. To have undertaken the rebuilding the railway desperately needs would have been "too challenging".

There's a metaphor there, somewhere.

prettybird · 27/09/2018 16:08

We have lots of lovely water in Scotland Smile. My dad lives beside a fresh water loch too Wink

Iirc, the main water supply for Glasgow is gravity fed from Loch Katrine. I know one of the reasons why the new, bigger water treatment plant was built beside Milngavie despite their NIMBY objections (they didn't mind the Victorian storage reservoirs as they were nice to walk around) was that the alternative location the NIMBYs proposed would have involved a lot of pumping to get it there.

1tisILeClerc · 27/09/2018 16:11

{Do you have vaseline and cotton wool to help start a fire? To boil the water. Cos matches are crap and flints are surprisingly difficult to use.

We do that in Scouts.
Tampons are a handy source of cotton wool as 'kindling'.

RedToothBrush · 27/09/2018 16:12

Saw this yesterday.

It's kind of related to Cheshire / Lancashire type talk. And why a Tory Mayor might say things about how the Conservative party was fucking up. And the Northern Powerhouse being binned

Jen Williams @ JenWilliamsMEN
Anyway in other conference news one of the things I learnt was that the Greater Manchester spatial framework thing has not been resolved. And there are other v hard policy decisions coming down the line as well for council leaders and Andy Burnham
One person not prone to hysteria in the slightest said they feared for the Greater Manchester project as a whole, which I found striking. The level of consensus needed on difficult issues is pretty hardcore

It also plays into the amazingly good new Labour Party political broadcast. Which is an election winner.

Election Data @ election_data
People know my views. But I swear, this week Labour has played an absolute blinder on towns. Full credit to @jeremycorbyn and his team (Oh and a shed in Bolton)
t.co/gLN6tKEc4P LINK TO TWITTER POST WITH VIDEO

What I really like is how it says this has been decades in the making. An acknowledgement that, although austerity has been brutal, our towns were already facing considerable challenges

It hits all the notes I've heard locally and repeatedly.

It also got noted by tory MP Robert Halfon

Robert Halfon MP @ halfon4harlowmp
Serious stuff from Labour this week that may resonate with millions of workers - @Conservatives need a thoughtful response to this at conference with a true vision & passion for a #Workers @ToryWorkers #socialjustice agenda . Predictable responses just won't cut it with public.

Most normal members of public don't know about Momentum or extremism or Lab internecine battles. What they do want is better public services, proper high streets, childcare etc.

Moreover just saying how will it be paid for is not enough after years of austerity and people struggling.

That is why Conservativsm needs to find Conservative response too replenishing social capital. Our priority must be to help workers, especially those on Lower Incomes, and to address social injustice, in way the public can see that we care about these things too.

Hence my article on Conhome today:
www.conservativehome.com/thecolumnists/2018/09/robert-halfon-please-please-free-me-from-brexit-groundhog-day-brexit-groundhog-day-brexit-groundhog-day.html

As a Party we must radically change or we will never win a proper election majority again.

And finally, charging working people more for a Milkshake treat at McDonalds is not the answer to ending burning social injustices.

Halfon is practically a Labour MP but he also comes from the Thatcherite blue collar camp in many ways.

FWIW I thought all this more important from the Labour Conference than anything to do with Brexit.

That party political broadcast is a master piece. As good as their general election Lily Allen one which I do think made a real difference and resonated with the undecided. I am impressed with it. (Though think its more empty promises focusing on the desire for hope, without a great deal behind it, but as a political broadcast - utter genius)

OP posts:
RedToothBrush · 27/09/2018 16:15

Note the bit where Labour steal the tory slogan and say 'an economy that works for everyone' in the party broadcast

RedTooth (and anyone else with objecting spouses)

The time has come to ignore them. They will have a conniption if you bulk buy all at once, so the only way is to buy a duplicate every time you shop, and quietly put that away. No further discussion. By the time they come around, the horse will have long bolted and you’ll be left clutching the door to your empty barn.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 27/09/2018 16:22

I forgot to add that my husband is just the same. Funnily enough, he grumbles less about it these days Hmm

DGRossetti · 27/09/2018 16:25

I am a typical (or an atypical Hmm) floating voter. Over the years I have voted Labour, Liberal, SDP, LibDem, Tory, Green. Generally I'd guess I'm centrist ... somewhere between a Tory wet and a Blairite Labour.

I have no religious pressures when voting, and am just as happy (FSVO "happy") to vote for a Remain-touting Tory party, as a Remain-touting Labour party.

Returning to the Boris discussion upthread, if he were able to somehow occupy the space of a remain-promising Tory leader (either directly or via referendum) how much support would he get ?

lonelyplanetmum · 27/09/2018 16:28

My DH has irritating conspiracy theories. The royal fam murdered Diana, that sort of thing- he thinks a deal has already been concluded behind closed doors.

I pointed out that what if it didn't get a Parliamentry vote? Also it would be a sizeable document and there'd be leaks unless TM /Tusk/Barnier tapped it out themselves on their iPads.

New thread before midnight I think?

RedToothBrush · 27/09/2018 16:34

New thread before midnight I think?

Already drafted. On my radar.

No conspiracy on a deal having already been done. Too many variables and potential for 'events' because of MPs with leadership ambition.

You can't get past that Tory Personality Trait on Brexit I'm afraid.

OP posts:
Violetparis · 27/09/2018 16:35

Maybe the most staunch remainers would support Boris, I think other remainers wouldn't, and I put myself in this category.
