After disaster after Salzberg and a very predictable humilation over the Chequers Deal which the ERG reject, moderate Brexiteers reject, Remainers reject and the EU reject....

May does a press conference...

...which is delayed by a power shortage inside No. 10.

And....

Anyone pick up the news that Jaguar are looking to slow production down ...

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/jaguar-land-rover-boss-ralf-speth-ready-to-follow-bmw-with-brexit-factory-shutdown-bqq6gs7jj

I vague wonder if the reason I've been contacted twice by someone looking to fill a vacancy there ?

woman11017 · 23/09/2018 21:13

I wouldn't think that the EU27 will be that thrilled either though, MyBrexitUnicornDied I bet they've already planned the party menu for 29.3.19. Smile

You know lots of Leave votes are shown to come from socio-economic group E - 'non-working'. Someone was asking today on Twitter about whether E includes pensioners. It does. I mean, I know lots on here realise the mortgage-free wealthy pensioner vote was a huge Leave voting demographic but including them in group E is extremely distorting.

Jo Maugham has nearly raised the cash to take this case to the ECJ:

Scotland’s Highest Court earlier today agreed to refer to the Court of Justice the question whether the United Kingdom can remain in the EU on its present terms.
It rejected the Government’s argument that the question is hypothetical. “It seems neither academic nor premature to ask whether it is legally competent to revoke the notification and thus to remain in the EU.”

Peregrina · 23/09/2018 21:37

Such a good question from Tony Nog from Hester's link a couple of posts above:

11) So here is the real question for Corbyn supporters.
#Brexit is essentially a victory for all of the attitudes Labour supposedly stands against. It is an attack on the hopes & futures of young people & those most hit by austerity
Its a movement of intolerance & division

I think he goes on to say, so why are you supporting it? In part, I think that they are afraid of losing some older Labour voters to a resurgent UKIP, but the last election showed that those fears were largely unfounded.

I think the papers come out around midnight.

Will Maughan's actions taking the case to the ECJ be too late? Putting a stay on Brexit would be a good starting point.

This is the Labour Party's Conference Big Reveal. Not their Brexit Strategy.

I knew it, I think I said so on the previous thread: after May's disastrous Salzburg performance the Tory rags would up their attacks on Corbyn.
Do we have a MIrror headline yet?

Employee shareholdings- that's the big reveal, seriously?

Not only is the opposition ignoring the biggest clusterfuck that is being heaped upon us, but the shareholding thing's not that far from something the Tories tried a few years ago.

The employee shared holder scheme was introduced in September 2013 so employees could give up certain employment rights in exchange for shares from their employer.it was ditched after three years mostly due to the fiddly tax rules and low take up. Ok this is compulsory share allocation but there won't be much to have shared in, unless trade is sorted.

RedToothBrush · 23/09/2018 22:53

And Finally.

The Mirror and Times.

The Times with a lead saying that FoM will be extended for EU citz arriving between March next year and Sept 2021 on production of a passport and passing a criminal record check. If they apply for a visa they will be allowed to stay permenantly.

Hard line Brexiteers aren't thrilled.

(see close up pic)

So its looking like Canada according to the Telegraph, with extended FoM according to the Times....

....maybe we should read it as Norway as a gateway to Canada as being pushed by Gove?

I guess we will find out during the course of the week, but that is possibly compatible with the EU for a deal. Unlike May's pigheadness.

Now I think this is the point where we might consider WHO is threatening a possible Cabinet resignation tomorrow if May doesn't drop Chequers.

Its not Hammond. Cos just no, its not.

Its not Hunt. He's been supporting her all weekend, like the loyal puppy dog he is. He wants someone else to trigger a leadership election.

Javid? Possibly but he's just got the big promotion, so I can't see it.

Raab? Blindly backed May over no deal today, saying they wouldn't change policy

Williamson. No. Buying time like Hunt.

Gauke, Hancock, Hinds, Clark & Wright. Can't see it for any.

Fox. Yes possibly. If the Cabinet back something which is in line with a US deal.

Grayling and Brokenshire. Nope. Too loyal to May.

Mundell, Cairns and Bradley. No. All on winners atm.

Mordaunt. Backed a full on no deal the other day. So no.

McVey. Still wanting a come back.

Gove. Well isn't he just the one?
Especially with the way the newspapers are pointing tonight.

re the Telegraph story.

Its supposed to be a revolt led by Hunt to get Canada.

However....

Sam Coates Times @SamCoatesTimes
I wonder how much impact Jeremy Hunt will have tomorrow given:

1. Whitehall sources claim this isn’t a fair representative of his views, just an extrapolation from Today interview

2. He is missing the cabinet meeting because he’s in the UN — so he won’t he “leading the revolt”

Sam Coates is suggesting the Telegraph story is trying to set Hunt up as the instigator.

Interesting.

As for the plans for workers getting 10%.

If you were a large multinational, wouldn't you just try and do an Amazon and off shore your profits via tax loop holes?

Thus meaning there would be less corporation tax and workers would see fuck all themselves.

Or you'd just put up prices to british consumers??

With it all together making us less competitive?

Surely I'm missing something here. I must be.

Brewdog have got this thing where people can buy shares in the company and be supporters.

A close inspection of the small print reveals that the UK company doesn't make much money. Instead it creates a situation where if the company were to go tits up, the owners wouldn't make a loss. However the liability would fall on the type C shareholders.

I suspect this would be an easy work around if complusory shares to workers were to be introduced.

It also has the effect of trapping workers at companies, because to get the benefit you have to stay at that company for at least five years. This is one reason that banks have good share schemes. People's salaries are depressed as a result because you aren't as free to change jobs.

Can anyone see why this proposed Labour policy might not really be so attractive to workers...?

Sounds a fab idea on the doorstep though. I like the idea in principal. The practical way it works, potentially not so much.

Very much the populist policy.

The 10% shares policy presumably excludes small businesses and the public sector / not-for-profits. So it disproportionately benefits men as significantly more women work in the public sector / not-for profits (teachers, nurses, care workers, etc.). Also, what about the self-employed! It’s a terrible policy.

missmoon · 23/09/2018 23:28

Dividends are also variable, so the benefits are uncertain, and presumably wages will fall to compensate?

How can i put this delicately. Truth is I can’t. Brexiter MPs tell me that if Mordaunt, McVey and Leadsom don’t resign from a Cabinet wedded to Chequers, any leadership ambitions they harbour will be extinguished. So Monday’s cabinet meeting should be lively
